When will cops ever get some guts and say "No. I'm not doing this?"

I would like to know what happened. That policewoman should be repreminded for outright lying. Why in the world would she tell him he could keep the pole then not do it??

It is cases like this that make it hard when you are trying to teach your kids to respect the law and policemen.

After reading the article on this page (http://www.courierpostonline.com/article/BL/20110326/NEWS02/103260346/Delaware-neighborhoods-Hoop-screams-Couple-protests-pole-s-removal) I was reminded of the difference between a republic and a democracy. We are taught the wonders of a democracy in our world today but we were not given a democracy. We were given a republic.

As was said in the early days of our nation... a democracy is 2 sheep and a wolf voting on what's for supper. A republic is the sheep having a gun.

In a democracy the majority can vote away the rights of the minority. In a republic your rights are your rights and no one can take them away.

But today in school our kids will be taught about how wonderful democracy is.

I would have to understand the reasons for removing them, whether they were on private property, and whether the residences were given fair notice with the options to relocate.

Hoovie,

If you google you can find articles about the video. One or more neighbors complained supposedly because they were concerned some kid might get hit by a car. I think the 86 year old neighbor was the main person.

The part that steamed me was the female officier just flat out lying to the guy telling him that they would leave his pole in the driveway and then they hauled it away. She ought to get in a lot of trouble for lying.

The 86 year old was inducted into the Pennsylvania Hall Of Fame in 2006 for starting a variety of youth sports leagues.

I guess he's had his fill of kids & sports.

And the business about being concerned some kid will get hurt. OH PLEASE!!!!! Nice try crazy people.

Yup I had seen that. Without knowing him don't know if he is a great kid loving guy or a cranky old man. Age changes people!

I discovered on a Transatlantic cruise a few years ago that was populated heavily with older retired people that for every inspiring elder citizen there must be at least ten old grouches who need to just go ahead and die!

The page D4T linked to said that the basketball pole was "angled toward the street." It went on to say that you could not have any trees or shrubs within 7 feet of the "free zone" either. Apparently a Delaware code.

They should have left the poles with the people. The basketball hoops could have been set up "correctly" and the kid's play time would have been undisturbed.

And the pole had been there for 16 years without mishap.

But... all of a sudden... today... it must come down and be jerked out of private property for the safety of the kids.

Yup, complete with a lying woman who told them they could keep their personal property then five minutes later acted like she never said it. I am so glad that video camera was there because you know she would deny saying it. Now she looks like a fool and I hope is forced to apologize to them for lying.

I wouldn't mind seeing this family get a large financial reward through the courts.

I viewed the video if you guys want a police officers view on the video well here it is. First to all of you on here that Hate the POLICE I just what to say thanks for all of the negative comments you have made toward them reflecting your good christian character.
That incident was handled wrong by not only the enforcement end of it but also by the City Hall's Government and it's city ordinances. The people should have been served an abatement notice by city hall requesting the removal of the pole, a time frame, and the reason by law why the pole was to be removed. In the video you can see the pole is between the street and the sidewalk. That area is the property of the city and is considered part of the street right away. Most cities have ordinances that control that portion of the street in regard to what can be placed there or what can be planted there.
I would bet that this gentleman received a notice along with other residence to remove the poles and declined to do it in the time frame given.

Thanks for your negative comments on our Christian Character. You, yourself, said they went about it wrong... and that is what we were commenting on.

They did receive a letter and this gentleman replied to the letter and his state representative and was awaiting a reply. He mistakenly thought he had a voice in this world and thought he would hear back on the issue and considered it still in discussion.

The woman blatantly and purposely lied straight to the mans face and I hope they come down on that. But my hopes aren't high.

I'll say for the state cops that they did conduct themselves respectfully. In this day and age you can go to jail for having the audacity to disagree with a cop. It is expected that you just stand there and take it no matter what is done and you have no voice. To allow a United States citizen to actually disagree with law enforcement without dragging him off to jail is a rare scene these days. So I do give them kudos for that.

But the woman... it would be nice to hear that she lost her job over this. Very nice.

This man said, he had responded to the letter with the help from his state representatives, and was awaiting another response from the DOT. Instead of waiting for the legal process to grind, they opted for intimidation and sent in the bulldogs. By doing so, they flagrantly assaulted this family's right to due process. Because of a complaint from some old guy who has a connection? The pole in question, was in a cul-de-sac. How does that mesh with the claim that it was in the traveling route of the complaining neighbor?

I sure hope this "lying woman" in the FBI sweatshirt (who apparently just left the gym and was on her way to pick up her uniform from the cleaners) was not certified as a negotiator while at Quantico. :laffatu

I just love how she even turns toward the camera as she tells the man they will place the pole in his driveway upon his request. The male voice (officer?) also moves in close and clearly says they will allow him the option to keep his pole.

Other notes: I also love how the guy waves to the attackers of his dignity as they drive up; who said hospitality is dead? I believe the man said the pole had been there for sixty years, not sixteen. I would sure love to see the follow-up on this one!! Totally outrageous!!! :foottap

It also sounded to me like he was saying 60 years. I thought... surely he meant 16.

lol......I was writing this and had to leave to take my son to school while Digging made one of my points. :) I would also like to give kudos the State Troopers who handled themselves with great restraint and dignity.

Lastly, though not least in importance is the question; Who, and of what authority is this woman, actually? We never see her identify herself. Also, I believe her actions in no way warrant termination, but certainly some better training in conflict resolution.

Probably not.

But it doesn't keep me from wishing it were so. :)

It is legal for cops to lie to people under certain circumstances. I don't know how far reaching those circumstances are.
