View Full Version : The Way it Ought to Be
In my Microbiology class, I got a 29 out of 33 on a test. I felt that I actually got a 33 and took my concerns to the teacher. After about 4 posts written back and forth, she gave me 32 out of 33 points and decided to award two extra points to every person in the class. This is a test that many in the class struggled with and didn't do very well on. Here is what she wrote:
HI,
I checked the test, corrected the error on the test, and gave you the points, now I’ll go back through all of the tests with that question and correct the error for people who got that one wrong.
Thank you for putting up with my obtuseness as I argued your point!
Sorry it to so long for me to realize you were right all along,
32/ 33 on this test, well done.
Her response almost made me want to cry. Do you know how rarely I have gotten a response like this from someone in authority when I have questioned them? It is SO hard for me to go to someone with concerns when I feel I am right. In the past the conversation would have gone more like I would have been told I simply did not understand the material. She did this at first too.....but when I pressed my point, (gently), she saw she was in error and apologize very graciously. I can see it though, in other instances in my life, when the person in authority began to see I was right, and, instead of backing down and apologizing, like my professor did, they would begin to get angry and criticize me, beating me down until I left with my tail between my legs and them feeling good for having "won".
But it ain't over until it's over. And beating someone until you've "won" isn't a real win.
I wish everyone in any place of authority would act like my teacher did.....

I see this alot with my wifes classes. Sometimes its pathetic. I have seen her teach the teacher at times and teach the class after the teacher is done because nobody understood the teacher. For the most part however, when she has approached the teacher with a mistake they have been well mannered about correcting it, some have even passed the credit on to her.

One of my kids was taught, in a Christian school, that every bone in Jesus' body was broken, on the cross. He made the mistake of trying to correct the teacher, as respectfully and politely as he could. I think it scarred him for life! :lol

The teacher I have is a great teacher and very conscientious. She is usually right. I had one teacher who was wrong quite a bit but did change things when they were incorrect too. What I strongly dislike is when people can't admit they are wrong and, in particular, abuse those who correct them.

Correcting anyone in any position of "authority" in churches has been very scary for many of us. :)

I was getting ready to meet our pastor, to, uh, discuss certain things he'd been preaching. The details aren't important, but my son commented that he might kill me. He was at least half joking, but not 100%. You never know, with some people that God talks to, all the time.

I have been afraid for my physical safety from church people. No joke.
But, if the people are really on God's side, I think God would just strike the enemy down like Ananias and Saphhira. Of course, some people might think God needs their help. Ya never know....
Certain church people:hurtyou
Person who challenged them:sorry:begging

I don't remember ever being chastised or even looked down on (to my face anyways) for questioning -but I also do not remember ever EVER being right. "Obey them" ALWAYS took precedent even if it involved adding too, or taking away from the Word.
