Wanting to learn the harmonica.

There is a particular song with chord progression C' G' A'. It has a bluesy feel. Does anybody know what harmonica I should get?

I have no idea what to tell you. My grandfather taught me to play one when I was a child before he passed away. He made me a cassette tape of songs on one side, and his testimony on the other. I guess that's probably one of my most treasured earthly possessions.

I can still play one-- in any key... because he left his collection of harmonicas to my Dad when he passed away.... and I still get to play them--- but as for helping anyone else learn-- I don't remember much about my lessons. The first song he taught me was Amazing Grace. I was 8 yrs old when he died. :(

I can help, but are you sure you've got the right chords? Is that A a A minor? What key is the song in? Give me the information and I'll explain what you need to do...

Jerry MoonThanks for your response and the PM. I'm sorry I can't explain the music portion very well. I know nothing about it. Thank God I'm surrounded by amazing individuals.

I can usually pick things up on the guitar when shown but to tell some one what I'm doing........impossible.

With the help of a friend I picked up the right harmonica. I got a C-harp. Learning it will just take time and discipline, of which I have very little. Any pointers would be appreciated.

If the song is in the key of C, and you got a C harp, you'll never get that blue's sound out of it... to get a blues sound, you'll need a F harp. You can only bend the notes when your sucking on it, and you'll find with the C harp, your always blowing when a bent note would sound good. Using a F harp, when everyone else is playing in the key of C is what's called a cross harp. I recomend Lee Oscars over any other brand. They bend easier and better than the others.

Jerry Moonthanks for the advice. The music store I went to knew nothing so they looked up some info in a book and I ended up with the C-harp.

It cost $30. What would a Oscar run $$$$ ?

Jerry MoonI take it you are a player. Are you self taught or did you learn best from a particular source?

Any suggestions of sources?

I finally come across a harmonica book that told about cross harp playing... other than that I'm self taught... I play the piano, organ, guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle, mandoline, drums, sax, xylophone, and harmonica... come to Borger and I'll give you some lessons... : )

The Lee Osker's have the main key on them, and also the cross key on them as a 2nd key.. another nice thing about them.

Jerry MoonI will soon inherit a mandoline. Grandparents were bluegrass stars.

Going a different route and playing guitar a little, how in the world do you chord on that incredibly ssmall neck? And is there any comparison in finger placement?

Cool... what's the brand of their mandoline? That will be something to hang onto, and they would be very proud if you'd learn to play it...

You can chord the mandoline, but it sounds better to pick it.. it's tuned like a fiddle. You pick the melody and catch, usually a open string next to the one that your playing the melody on. On YouTube, you can look up mandoline lessons. There's some pretty good vidios on it...

Jerry Moon[/QUOTE/ It is a Fender. Funny thing is gramps bought grammy a Martin for aaround $200 and when he passed she sold it for over $2000. I was a little miffed about that to say the least.

Thanks for the info on lessons. You into bluegrass?

The Fender would more than likely bring more than that, but it will be worth more than that to you.

I like every kind of music that there is I think... I especially like blues and Jazz. But with a banjo, it's simply blue grass style... going to get to play the banjo some tonight at a singing I hope...
