Jewelry comes alive: The Maquech broach
Live beetles covered in jewelry are all the rage in Mexico. These bling covered pets are part of a centuries old tradition. (March 27)
Traditionally many Pentecostals have worn various broaches... Would you wear this one? Watch the video!

I have very severe problems with this. I do not approve of jewelry under any circumstance, but this is nothing less than idolatry (the insect is being worshiped even if they would deny that).

I wear a wedding ring and a pendant that is the only piece of my mother's jewelry that was not stolen by the hospital after her death has been a constant companion for a couple of weeks....
But jewel crusted bugs... nope.

I am not sure about that... but on other grounds I oppose it. Torturing the bug for our pleasure...

Of course, this is coming from a guy that has some real problems with live bait.
That's disgusting!
I have problems with live bait too, but my husband has no issue with it.

LOL, all the Pentecostals I ever saw that wore the broaches were considered liberals where I come from....lol. Don't approve of any type of jewelry, including wedding bands, broaches, cufflinks, etc.... so, nope wouldn't wear a bug, LOL.

Ya, no more than painting the back of a turtle.

No...but only because it's creepy. Not because I think it constitutes "worshiping" the insect in question. Ancient Egyptians worshiped cats; that doesn't mean I'm worshiping a cat if I have one in my house or put a jeweled collar on it. :rolleyes2
You're not worshiping something unless you're actually, well, worshiping it (or deifying it in some way). Otherwise, everyone needs to go through their house and trash every statue or figurine they come across for fear of it being an "idol."

Uh... their chance of being "normal" is pretty slim. Not that I am a insect advocate... but to bling these critters up and chain them to your clothes, while alive, is a bit distorted, I think. Especially, just for the thrill and amusement.

You don't have any pets?

No. Why do you ask?
I do not approve of jewelry, even if it my pets wearing it. :D Further, how are those insects to eat or reproduce (neither big on my list of concerns generally) if they are spending hours chained to clothing. This just seems cruel to me. It would just be better to squish them like the bugs they are.

I think that's what I think. Kill'em if you want. But chain them...?

Please explain the comment about idolatry.

I am confused as to why you think the insect is "being worshipped"??? That is quite a stretch.
I really like my nice Invicta watch but I don't worship it. My wife likes her jewelry but also but liking something does not equal worshipping it at all.
I think the idea of the jewel encrusted bug is gross but I do not confuse it with idolatry.

Perhaps the Incas did worship them centuries ago.
In the past, things similar to this were done in honor and worship of the god represented by the creature. The scarab was worshiped in Egypt, and others have been worshiped in other places. I was making a correlation between these. I am convinced that many are closer to worshiping these creatures than we believe.
