See, this is why he is a great example for a younger minister to emulate.

If the youngsters DID choose a guy like rrford to pattern themselves after, the up and coming generation of UPC preachers would be and could be taken a little more seriously.

Too bad this is focused on young preachers. I know quite a few baby boomers who really could have used these twenty commandments.

We hope young preachers are smart enough to know they need the above advice more than the old preachers who have been through the school of hard knocks frontwards and backwards.

Don't preach a Mark Hanby sermon by changing the title. We have heard them all.

If you travel and evangelize, don't show up in my Mustang GT 2006.

Drive an older car your offerings will be larger.

LOL! I have never heard that one. Then again, MH was a good preacher but not at the top of my list of favorites.

LOL! I have never heard that one. Then again, MH was a good preacher but not at the top of my list of favorites.

I heard "Mama go Home" this young evangelist titled it "A mothers loss". He stated from the pulpit how God revealed the sermon to him.

He went on for 10 minutes about the story.

I told him, I heard Mark Hanby was calling himself and Apostle.

I had not heard he was now calling himself God.

The young man looked at me like he lost his fake Gold tie pin.

I said, "Moma Go Home", is a classic 1970's MH sermon.

Great advice, rrford.

My old pastor wasn't much for giving detailed advice to us young preachers.

I can sum up his training in four words: "Pray, fast, and study."

that's what my senior pastor and my pastor say, and practice.

I like how the list started and ended with prayer.

You never seem to come here with these posts that you do not fill my plate with good food.

Now I realize I am just not seeing this for some reason, but good you explain #14 a little more?

It is basically saying to be sure and use the Bible for your text and then preach your text.

Current events, statistics, stories, etc. can indeed be great assets when preaching. But it seems that many preachers have started basing the majority of a message on those things. Nothing will ever top the Word when it comes to a basis for preaching, from intro to altar call.

I just came across this thread and I must say I AGREE with this Addendum. See it happen way to many times, even with preachers just across town coming to hold a special service.

Thanks for bumping this.

(Good list by the way.)

As for the grand entrance thing, our own pastor (of many years ago) did this himself. Somberly walking in toward the end of song service, not unlike the father-of-the-bride walking down the isle, as he majestically approached his alter for the sermon.
