View Full Version : What do you think about AFF now???

These are some of the things people said before we moved into our current home:
I think Apostolic FRIENDS Forum says it all - that's what this is all about: meeting here with our friends. Friends who just enjoy being together whether we are just fellowshiping, or whether we are discussing heavy doctrinal issues or whether we are watching the Super Bowl together.
Yep, I vote for Apostolic Friends Forum. It just sounds so loving!

I suppose that "aplaceforapostolicsandformerapostolicscanhangoutan dtalkthatwillstayupforalongtimeand
beeasytousebecausetheyareaddictedtotalkingtoeachot herandwoulddieiftheycouldntchatwitheachother"
forum is too long?

I actually see more freedom with five seperate owners. If one owner loses their temper and breaks forum rules, they can be banned and replaced as owner.
The only problem is if three owners ban together (UPC) and disregard the other two owners.
Knowing at least one of the owners, I doubt this person would partner with folks who's personality and charactor were questionable!
I feel good about this arrangement!
Pianoman
BTW, I like the name Apostolic Friends Forum.
Tina and everyone involved, you need halos permanently attached.
You are all angelic, and your foresight was incredible.
Thanks for everything! :clap
Pastor Poster
I like the name as is: Apostolic Friends Forum! It's great! Says it all!!!
Dora
my vote still lies with Apostolic Friends Forum (AFF)
I think that is the main reason NFCF failed was because people left out of the "Friends" part.... they weren't friendly and many times were just plain mean and vicious.... :drawguns and yes, I may still occasionally rag on JCOOP....
we need to always keep our "Apostolic" roots.... and remember that no matter what we say on the forum, that we still need to be able to walk away "Friends" with whomever we were speaking with.... if we fail at these two things, we've already failed as a forum..... thus Apostolic Friends Forum (AFF)

How is AFF doing???
I think it's better than NFCF and FCF, but you need to remember that certain prominent posters that seemed to always be in the center of controversy are no long part of the posting family. That has gone a long way in keeping AFF a more peaceful kinda place. Plus, I think people have grown tired of constantly bickering over the same issues because there just doesn't seem to be as much in the way of standards talk as there used to be. But, the libs still get a chance to jab at the cons and vice versa, which is always fun. So, overall, me thinks I like it here.

I was telling someone the other day that AFF has been my haven, my little cave. The past year has been very tough for my family, and AFF has filled a void.
I know, go ahead and say it. I'm a loser.

Why would someone say that? It's been what it's been for you to lots of people. I know that these forums is a way for me to stay connected with apostolic people. You're not a loser, Bro.

As long as you don't take everything so serious it's a fun place to hang out - - just like the fellowship hall after church!

Just a few questions to consider:
do you see that people are more respectful of others here on AFF?
do you see any glaring problems or flaws with how AFF has grown?
does AFF's environment seem to encourage the arrival of new posters?
do you think enough of AFF as a forum to mention it in passing to a friend?
are there some pieces of the "big picture" puzzle that AFF is currently missing?
what are some innovative ideas that could help us seperate ourselves from other forums?

Two posters have joined at my recommendation.
I really wish AFF would have guest posters from the Christian world scheduled on a monthly basis. People like Tenney, Mangun and the like. Major players like authors and recording artists talking abbout their passion for the kingdom.
It would be awesome to have a heavily moderated thread like this where questions were pm'd to admin before they made it to open forum.

Do you think that AFF is mindful enough of "hurting posters" in regards to giving them a "small break" or "a bit more room" when they are posting??? or is it as cut-throat as FCF/NFCF in their hay-days???

I think most agreed that most safety and mutual respect was a higher priority to them at the cost of "a little less" posting liberties/freedom.... for those that spoke up on the "old AFF site".... is that still true for you today??? has AFF become a bit more "friendly" as the result of a bit tighter moderation???

There seems to be a bit more compassion here. I was really fuming about Epley's assessment of Berk the other day (missions trip). But over all I feel that most of us are friends here. It's not nearly as cut-throat here. There have been times when I could have torn someones belief system and doctrine to shreds, but didn't because there was no value in it. I'm sure the samne graciousness ahs been extended to me at times.
I do feel admin has been a little trigger happy at times. The Nix situation should have been given a bit more play. But overall, admin and ownership have done an incredibly awesome job.

getting "big names" to recognize a forum as a legitimate channel of discussion and communication I would imagine would be kinda difficult to establish.... how would you recommend that AFF could establish a "need" to hear their voices regarding particular issues without them having the danger of walking into a "den of possible criticisms"?
It would be awesome to have a heavily moderated thread like this where questions were pm'd to admin before they made it to open forum
I think that would really bog down the posting flow of AFF, so speaking on behalf of AFF staff.... I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.... :D

And we see that much freedom ended with a closed forum, because people took advantage of the "freedom" they were given.
Multiple owners is a guarantee that no one person can walk away and close this forum. That is a GOOD thing. :)
Moderation isn't always a bad thing. I'd much rather have a place with moderation, than something where "anything goes" and it ends up being a bloodbath. If people were able to have a little more self control/self moderation, there wouldn't be so much admin intervention. JMHO.

Eliminate criticism. We have admin and moderators here. Disallow any open posting on the thread they are scheduled to appear on. Make sure all questions are pm'd to admin - not open forum. Follow up by not allowing any criticism of their appearance on other threads either.
Establish a need by allowing them to talk about their projects.

First I think I pretty much agree with the quotes you posted...except i still find myself refering to this place as my "faithchild family"
I do think AFF is a lot more civil than NFCF was and is much closer to what we all thought FCF should be toward the end there as well. Even when I have disagreed with Admin on some issue or another, It seems that you guys have been open to explaining yourselves and clearly your goals have been the betterment of the board and not driving personal agenda.
that speaks of the collective charactor of the Admin/ownership group.
I do know that this place can be daunting for newbies. we can seem like a closed click and new people can get squashed. This has been a long standing problem dating back to FCF. if there is any weakness on this board, it would be how we approach new people... and how they approach us.

What people are failing to see here is that just because I am not cheerleading the squad doesn't mean that I am running down the board...come on, I have enough postings to mean that I occasionally throw in a point of view or two, ie, I am a participant...I am not NEGATIVE to the board.
However, I have never been a yes man, never been the back slapper to the crowd. I will not join in with the rest of everybody saying, "AFF has been the best thing to happen to me!!" I'm sure all can agree that for every half hour spent here or anyother leisure website is a half hour detracted from real life...but, with the net being a part of life like it is now, I am not one to say that the net can't be real in some ways.
I think one of my goals is to put smugness as far away from myself as possible...for when you least expect it...the dude was smug after tearing down his barns, building new barns, then being smug and satisfied...then his soul was required of him.

And, Your Majesty Malvaro, I apologize if I disrespected you in my post earlier

This has been a long standing problem dating back to FCF. if there is any weakness on this board, it would be how we approach new people... and how they approach us.
yes, i do mention AFF in conversation with other Apostolics, and sometimes people say things in passing and it makes me wonder if they are lurking! LOL! I think there is a LOT of that. (LURKERS!)

It could be set up in a different room instead of the main area where we congregate. you could post stickies of a schedualed appearance.
an email requesting an offical response to a list of questions could be posted in a closed thread. there have been times when that was appropreate.
other great ideas....

How is AFF doing???
Of the three (FCF, NFCF and AFF), I like AFF the best by far! I think that in the friendlier, less confrontational environment we have here, people have grown to know each other better and to care about one another more deeply. We can disagree now, and that's fine, but people are aware now that they are talking with other human beings who have feelings just like they do themselves.
You've made an important point here, Rico. I agree that in the past we've bickered over standards and other issues to the point that we've run them into the ground. We know that we aren't likely to change each other's minds about certain things. So let's move on. Enjoy and appreciate each other for who we are and where we are in our walks with God. Nothing wrong with good healthy discussion on these things, but I think most here have learned to do it tempered with love, for the most part.
I have ahd multiple Threads stopped, locked , deleted. Nfcf offered more freedom in that regard
Umm, Thad, have you considered that there might be a very good reason for that? If it only happened once or twice, you might say that Admin jumped the gun. But when it happens over and over, perhaps they have a legitimate reason. JMHO
*yes
*no
*I think AFF is very welcoming to new posters. Altho I do think that alot of that depends on the poster themself. If they come on here like a house afire, well, maybe we step back and put up our guard for a while. But that's just human nature.
*yes, I mention AFF to friends all the time. Sometimes you should see the looks I get when I mention "my forum" :)
*I don't know what innovative ideas separate us, but I do have a question about this cooling down area? I dont' get how that works? If you are relegated to that place, is that the ONLY place you are ABLE to post??
I think most agreed that most safety and mutual respect was a higher priority to them at the cost of "a little less" posting liberties/freedom.... for those that spoke up on the "old AFF site".... is that still true for you today??? has AFF become a bit more "friendly" as the result of a bit tighter moderation???
And we see that much freedom ended with a closed forum, because people took advantage of the "freedom" they were given.
Multiple owners is a guarantee that no one person can walk away and close this forum. That is a GOOD thing. :)
Moderation isn't always a bad thing. I'd much rather have a place with moderation, than something where "anything goes" and it ends up being a bloodbath. If people were able to have a little more self control/self moderation, there wouldn't be so much admin intervention. JMHO.
Amen, well-said, Tina

He did a great job at what is already being discussed among the owners on what direction to continue or point the board.
The fact we allow it to continue openly, even letting those like Monkeyface give negative feedback shows some of the open door found here with the Admin Team we have. :bubble
If you don't have negative feedback...it would be a gooey mess...
The reason we as human beings don't wallow in a pool of plasma is because the negative pressure of the atmosphere - the air around us resists our internal pressure...it supports us and keeps us together...can be good, a little negativity can...:killinme

How is AFF doing???
I like AFF.
I decided to cut down on the time I spend online and to do that I'm going to stop going to two other forums and opt for this to be my home, so to speak. Why? Because I like the variety of the opinions I find here. It lends to good discussions on doctrine and other things.
I can't really compare AFF to the other two forums. I was only on NFCF for about 3 months and spent most of the time in the Bible Discussion area. I waded into general discussions near the last month and 1/2 and got nipped by a few crabs and unwisely stuck my foot in my mouth a few times. :oops
LOL! it is the gift that keeps on giving.

I agree with Thad, the critism of the previous ownership, whether NFCF or FCF should be put behind us. We can simply move onward.
Some have said they tried to get family or friends to join, and were told many reasons why others would NOT come. Do we offer something then to appeal to the bandwidth? Are we a haven like PP said he found? - Thank you PP! What is it that draws us here and keeps us here?

in some respects we are a haven. I have found this place and its two predisessors to be such, in much the same way PP has.
We need to remember that not everyone out there likes the internet or message boards in general the way the AFF family does! a lot of people look at you like your nuts when you say you are on any message board so I wouldnt get a complex when folk tell you they wont join.
I think there is a general personality thing that lends itself to being on these type of places. you either do or you dont.
then there is the notion that this is read by a lot of people. some just arent comfortable with that idea.

I will have to back Thad a little and say that there needs to be a little more freedom on reporting events both good and bad! If a person is an eye witness, or hears a report from a reliable source, I see no reason to not use names. I see no problem if the poster doesn't add to the story to make it sound juicy! Stick to the facts and nothing but the facts!

Mr Red Shoes-
In the lower Left (side of keyboard without arrows is Left) there is a drop down box and in that box are color choices for the board.

I think AFF is a good forum for the most part. I think many see it as a bad thing and it probably does need more balance. I notice you have at least one poster whose dumb remarks make you glad you aren't a con and at least one poster whose rants make you embarrassed for liberals. That makes for fiery arguments but it isn't the real balance your forum needs.
