Newser) – The US Department of Agriculture quietly announced on Friday that it had approved four Chinese poultry plants to ship processed chicken into the US. It's no wonder it tried to sneak that news onto the eve of a long weekend, notes Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-09-03/don-t-trust-a-chicken-nugget-that-s-visited-china.html): China has a dodgy reputation for food safety, with repeated (http://www.newser.com/story/166044/bird-flu-sickening-kfc-sales.html) outbreaks of avian flu and the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/31/business/chinese-chicken-processors-are-cleared-to-ship-to-us.html?_r=2&) reports that Chinese-made chicken jerky recently killed hundreds of US dogs (http://www.newser.com/story/141718/dog-disease-complaints-to-fda-single-out-3-brands.html).

So it's a little worrying that these processing plants will operate without USDA inspectors, and the agency does not require point-of-origin labeling, so American consumers will not know where their chicken comes from.

Like I tell my family, The only way to get safe, nutritious food, is to raise it yourself. And I know that everybody can't do that. So the next best thing is to buy local produce.

I don't trust anything that comes from China. I bought 2 Lock Top jars to make kraut in. I never noticed that they came from China. There was a notice on there that the glass contained lead and another big long name of a chemical that causes cancer.

Doesn't ANY "chemical" with a name of sufficient length, cause cancer? At least according to the state of California.

Actually, I think any man-made chemical causes cancer or something.
I once knew a Dr. that said if you can't pronounce it don't eat it or put it on your skin.
