It concerns me to see so called apostolics wrapped up in sports. I feel that we have forgotten that Exodus 20:3 states "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." He is a jealous God and does not want us involved with things of this world. When we become wrapped up with entertaining our flesh we don't even realize that we have created a little god in our hearts. Don't get me wrong, i've struggled with the little G's myself but realize that serving God is far more sufficient than a sports game will ever be!

I agree that sports can become a little g. Last year I participated in a couple fantasy football leagues, one with friends in church and one at work. I found myself checking scores during church! And before/after the service I'd be talking with the others about the games. I won't say it's wrong for anyone to be involved in a league, but for myself personally, it was wrong because it took my attention away from God. This year I withdrew from both leagues.
I still watch my teams play football though. :)
There are many things which can become little g's. Money. Possessions. Sports. Even some church things can become little g's.

The little g which surpasses all g's is the me, myself, and I god.
The religion called "its all about me."
That one is the silent killer.

you people and your "sports are evil" stuff.
good grief. Ive seen some folk who had little g gods. money, work, stuff, image, drugs, alcohol, all those things, I have seen with my own eyes.
You know what I have been warned about all my life but havent actually seen? SPORTS.
I tell you what I have seen. 10 years ago or so, I had a kid in my youth group. He was fatherless and he was an inner city kid. He didnt have much chance but his mother lived the Lord.
I pushed him toward football. He got discipline in his life. I went to his games and and supported him in his sport. When he got mad at his coach for yelling at him, I convinced him it was important to listen and take the discipline and do what he was being asked.
He got a scholoship to play football in college. Not D1 but certainly better than the options he had sans football. That kid was at church sunday, as he usually is these days.
college is behind him, his future which is far better than the one that he would have had without SPORTS is ahead of him. He loves the Lord and is a fine young man.
You fellers with your anti-sports preaching need to take some serious stock on what really matters. I KNOW men who will work until october, then quit their jobs and hunt all winter. Thier families live hand to mouth but hey, preacher is happy with them because they arent playing sports and come to church on sunday! Ive never heard one single preacher preach against hunting.
you guys need to get your story straight.

I'm certainly not against sports, but I have seen people let it control their lives. I've known guys who have bought NFL Season Ticket to watch every game, while ignoring their family and staying home from church. One of my friends bought season tickets, costing hundreds of dollars, yet complains any time the church asks for a special offering for church events or missions.
I have a story about a kid, too. He was in my youth group and started playing football in HS. Before doing so, he was as dedicated as anyone I've seen. Always in church, always helping out with any youth even or project. That all changed once he started playing football. He didn't have time for youth services or bible studies. Didn't have time for Sunday service either. But he did have time to practice and play football, as well as hang out with his football buddies at parties. Today he doesn't go to church, doesn't have anything to do with God.
We could go tit for tat on stories about the pros and cons of sports; however, there absolutely can be a little g in sports, including football.

In every case where the "husband" was a sports fanatic, the wife usually is as well -thus it remains a family affair. :) And yes, we usually will miss a couple of services throughout the season to watch a game.
When we watch the Packers my wife is the one who is scaring the dogs with all her shouting at our moron defense (under Dom Capers).

I don't believe it's "in every case...the wife usually is as well," because the wives of the one's I mentioned hate football season. They and my wife would love nothing more than for the entire sport to be banned.

Truth of the matter...we can make anything a god...
Kids, job, friends, our church, pastor, doctrine, and even personal convictions that we hold near and dear.
Living a sanctified and separated life is what I personally believe in, and I think that everyone who calls themselves a Christian should as well.
What that involves, however, differs somewhat according to teaching and conviction.
I had a former pastor who taught it was a sin to play checkers because he used to gamble on checkers. So to him, it was wrong.
See what I mean?
It's a matter of being right before God...as right as I can be, but not condemning those who may not see as I do.
Sports for some may very well be a god. That is something they have to deal with.
My 83 year old momma watched the Wolverines beat the socks off Notre Dame Saturday night, and she was thrilled and excited to see it happen.
Is momma going to yon lower regions for cheering UofM?

Excellent post. Football is no more a god to me than golf or hunting is to folks who enjoy those pastimes.
Any christian worth his salt will have his priorities right and not "worship" football while still enjoying it and feeling fervent about it and the teams he supports.
To me it is an insult to peoples intelligence, their walk with God, the Holy Spirit, and God's word to try and paint with a broad brush that something like football is a "god" because people enjoy it.
However having spent over half a century in or around old time Pentecost I am used to this mentality and take it for what it is.

I have a young man in my church who came to me several years ago to discuss some things. As we sat in my office he began to pour out his heart to me and explained that he was getting wrapped up in hockey and felt convicted. He began to tell me that he would go home after church and watch NHL hockey highlights. As we continued talking he began telling me that he felt a very cold chill going down his leg. I encouraged him to listen to the conviction he felt. That Sunday night he came into the sanctuary weeping during prayer and was clutching his hockey stick and a San Jose Sharks jersey to his chest. He laid them both on the altar and received victory from the bondage of sports!
Let me take this a step further.
I often teach on the subject of entanglements of/with the world. It is an important subject. We do need to be careful of our involvement in the things that around us. I pointed out this past Sunday that we are strangers on earth and if we don’t feel that we are strangers when in the company of the lost, then we need to review our relationship with God.
This is simple Christian teaching. That doesn’t mean we need to avoid all the places those outside the Family of Faith go, nor does it mean we should avoid all the things those outside the Family of Faith do. What it does mean is that we must first recognize who we are in Christ and let that govern our involvement.
Why is this so hard? What I find is that this kind of teaching is either ignored by the so-called saints, or it is abused and turned into a list of things we must collectively all adhere to. This is just as bad as NOT TEACHING ANYTHING! Why would I spend 5 minutes telling someone to avoid football games when that person has no inclination that would lead sporting events to become engrossing? It is nonsensical. What I must tech is the RULE. Take care of the things you spend your time on. Insure that your focus on the things of God is not diminished by your attachment to the things of this world.
When I teach the principle and leave the application in the hands of the Child of God, and leave the expectation that the child of God will follow the Spirit, then I have done the needful and the saint will grow in maturity. If all I do is give them a list of things to do and not do, then I insure the saint remains stuck and immature and incapable of hearing the voice of God and growing. Paul was very clear on the point. He detested the notion of saints remaining immature.

I get it, you love football. I do, too. Fall is my favorite time of the year. I follow my teams year-round and love watching them play. But I'm not closed-minded or ignorant to the fact that football can become a little g. I've seen it happen too many times.
So while you ridicule and reject that football could ever be a little g, understand there are many who have allowed football to control their lives to their detriment. Whether by playing, watching, or gambling on the game, it can and does happen.
I agree with what you said above...what I don't agree with is your ridicule at the suggestion that football could become a little g.

N David, I take your words here. maybe i overstep when I say it cannot/does not happen. Certainly anything can become engrossing to the point that it nudges God out.
my issue isnt with the person starrting this tread saying "football" is a little G.
it is with the notion that because some folk here talked football they were all worried about us. The very idea that we need to name the list. that we need to have a list of things to avoid least it become the "little g" is absurd.
Im good with (as I stated above) teaching that ALL things we do, we should do with a view to its affect on our spiritual lives. But the point being made here is FOOTBALL BAD! Well Football is NOT bad. Neither is baseball, or watching TV or walking thru the mall etc.

Alas, what if one of these young men so sinfully obsessed with sports managed to be good enough to get a professional contract and play for a living. No0w, if said young man made a few million dollars a year playing these ungodly sports and he said he wanted to not only tithe but go ahead and pay off the church building, would you anti-sports folsk still be so convinced of his worldly sinfullness for loving sports?

Alas, what if one of these young men so sinfully obsessed with sports managed to be good enough to get a professional contract and play for a living. No0w, if said young man made a few million dollars a year playing these ungodly sports and he said he wanted to not only tithe but go ahead and pay off the church building, would you anti-sports folsk still be so convinced of his worldly sinfullness for loving sports?
I've long said this about about someone winning a lottery or perhaps a million+ dollar jackpot on the slots. I am sure the pastor of said person would be expecting their 100,000-300,000 (or even millions) tithes check.

A family member's pastor plays golf, flies in his son's airplane for the joy of it, and allows for softball playing among the young people.
Yet when a family member wanted to take my nephew to a U of M game, it was a BIG deal, with the remark being made, "We know we're the only one's holding a line."
WHAT?!
The problem is not with the sport, rather with the intent of the heart.

Did you catch the "B1G?" Yah, I'm a nerd.
A preacher that will walk onto a golf course but "hold the line" on baseball for football is lying to himself.
Those little carts driving around the golf course with the purddy girls in scanty clothes arent selling orange juice.
and there is more vile gambling talking place at the local Muni course than you can find in the stands at a football game.
Not to mention that nice clubhouse with thier nice hamburgers are really glorified bars designed for men to hide from their wives.

Bingo! (ding, ding, ding.) How many of us mature men would roll our eyes at a lovely old Grandma who wishes to wax on and on about her Croquet Arts accomplishments? If you are a decent man--none of us would. Rather, we smile, and pretend to care, because her croquet art is something that means much to HER, and she is a demonstrably good human being--and the likes of her gave birth and nurture to the likes of me. And that is the human condition--good people attempt to empathize with others, even if we don't "get it" at the moment.

If one watches highlights after every game? Ok to watch the game but if you keep it on to see the highlights your in sin?
You only watch the highlights of a game for one reason, because you missed the game. I watch highlights of games that come on during church times because I will not choose staying home to watch a game over going to church. Am I in sin?

They are neither your sheep, nor does scripture ever spell out that the job of a NT Pastor is to set any boundaries. They are God's sheep and the Pastor, as well as the rest of the 5 folds, job is to preach the word and be an example. The word says diddly hot squat about football, hockey, or any other sport or spending a few minutes checking scores to see if your team won a game or not.
I would go against what you preach, because once you leave the word of God...you no longer have any authority. I cannot believe they don't teach things this simple in bible college. Your only authority is the word and when you go outside the word you no longer have any authority, unless you have manipulated the people into giving you authority where you don't deserve it.

I dont normally weigh in on this kind of stuff-could care less really, but the irony was just too rich to pass up.
I don't care that apostolics are wrapped up in sports. What I care about is that they preach against them, have a written mandate against them and yet still are wrapped up in them. And also preach against jewelry and yet wear wedding rings and brooches. And have a mandate against TV in the homes and yet many preachers have them.
you know this idea of a "conviction" against sports. or some corporate teaching against organized sports makes no biblical sense to me considering the number of times Paul uses sports as an analogy for our walk with God.
Further, the word Temperance that both Paul and Peter talk about is a pre-christian greek concept that relates to the DISIPLINED LIFESTYLE of the Atheletes of the day.

I have a very simple view of this. We will worship someone or something whether it be the one and true God, sports, entertainment, money, people, church traditions, our own standards of "holiness" or even ministries. We will worship something. We will promote what we worship. It will be the thing that we seek to relate to the most and what we wish for others to identify us with. If we worship Jesus, we will promote Jesus. If we worship self, we will promote self before over Jesus. If we worship entertainment, we will promote the thing that entertains us over Jesus. Instead of railing against one little g.we should preach the worship of God above all else. Simply picking specific things like sports or TV gives an easy out for those who are quick to worship other things just so long as it isnt TV or sports. Lets preach principles.

Matt. 23:24 "Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel."
I am amazed at the inconsistencies of some. Let me paraphrase Matt 23:24 for you.
BeenThinkin 23:24 Ye blind Apostolic (not all!) guides, pastors, bishops, present day deacons, prophets and saints, which strain at a TV (and what is seen thereon) and swallow an internet. (Which is filled with all filthyness and what ever you choose to display on your desk top).
Really! Where is your honesty? On a TV you are limited to programing that is displayed for your looking at any certain time. And oh yes, there are the ads. (Have you tried opening up anything lately on the internet without a 15 to 30 second ad jumping up without your asking for it?....and oh, go ahead and try to stop the ad!)
What can you watch on the computer, ipad, ipod, cell phone, tablet, etc.? WHATEVER YOU WANT TO WATCH, from pure filthy porno....(any flavor you choose....need I state the obvious?) to chat forums where you can talk to anyone you choose... be it someone's else's wife or husband, or a man portraying himself as a beautiful, sexy woman, or a pedophile looking for another child to destroy. And oh, by the way, you can see anything that is displayed on TV, for the most part!
Now the age old argument is you don't have to watch any of the things that I have mentioned on the computer. You choose what you want to see. Well blow me down, I have never had anyone come into my home and make me watch anything on TV that I didn't want to watch.
The world must look at all of the Apostolic, Pentecostal and other TV fanatics and wonder what in the world are they doing on the "evil computer"? Now please don't misunderstand me..... I'm not against the TV, the Internet, or whatever, no more than I am not against the car, (which can take me to get beer, go to a house of ill repute, go see someone else's wife or go park in a lover's lane)!
In this world we live in I can do whatever I choose. It seems like some think being a Christian should be like the following. When you get in church then the pastor will monitor everything you say and do, where you buy your car, where you buy your home, where you go on vacation, who your friends are, what you have in your home, where you go, how much time you spend doing anything of enjoyment, etc. Now when the church grows a little he can't cover everything with his protecting eye so he has others in the church that keep an eye on you. (You don't think this happens? You haven't been down the Pentecostal Road I've traveled.)
I seem to recall a scripture that said this... Php 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."
I prefer the Holy Ghost speaking to my heart and directing my every step. And by the way, if allowed too, HE WILL!
I better quit! I hate long posts and this one has turned into that. Forgive me!

There was certainly enough hypocrisy to fill a swimming pool but I my strongest memory is people sitting (or standing) around glorying in their list with each person so proud of how many boxes they had checked off with a red pen. Like a scavenger hunt. My, they so enjoyed seeing people squirm who didn't have the same boxes checked off whenever the pastor preached a strong holiness sermon!

With all due respect... and I do respect people like yourself who have a strong line against television. I am not one of the ones who blast away....
however, I beleive in the Water/Spirit doctrine. I teach it. I preach it. In my teaching, I almost weekly relate the Chirsitian experience to the Doctrine of Sanctification. I honestly do not believe you can as a minister stand before God and hear "well done" if you are not teaching Sanctification.
This past Sunday i stated the following "if you look at the way the world is acting and you dont think of yourself as an alien, then you need to really take a hard look at your walk with God. We are not to be comfortable with the lifestyle expressed by the lost".
and I am not Apostolic? I dont own a wedding ring. I do not wear shorts outside my house. I do however own a TV. I am not Apostolic?
With due respect, if you teach against TV, you have not seen one in a very long time. Exactly how can you therefore state that "there is nothing on it that glorifies God...only the flesh."?
Are you sure?
Now there isnt much that "glorifies god" that goes on in the daily life of most of the world. I sat thru more than one English class in college that didnt "glorify god" but I learned some really important stuff.
Ive watched a few programs on TV that have taught me some pretty important things as well. Glorify God? not in the strictest sense of the word, but I can sure entertain folk and cook some stuff that would blow your mind and do that to the Glory of God and a lot of my skills came from watching cooking shows on PBS on saturday mornings 15 years ago... of food network last week.
so....err.... uhm....
I suspect you wouldnt like it if I suggested you werent Apostolic because in my mind you have added to scripture. I could say that. others have. There is good solid bible for it.
But I am not disrespectful to fellow Apostolics.

I preach against TV, there is nothing on it that glorifies God...only the flesh. If you have a TV in your home then you are not Apostolic! I have never preached against highlights, if one is not wrapped up in sports then they will not have a desire to watch highlights. And since i'm knee deep already...it is also wrong to be involved in fantasy football leagues! I know a lot of you aren't going to like it but just because you don't want to believe the truth, the truth is still the truth!
How do you know there is nothing on TV that glorifies God? You can get hundreds of channels today...have you watched them all? What if an Apostolic church us broadcasting the truth on TV?
Why not computers and Internet? Why not preach against those and say if you have Internet access, you are not Apostolic?

The word doesn't say anything about pornography, television or bowling either...that doesn't make those things ok! Before you start telling me how I need to run my church I believe that it would be best for you to put your nose in The Book!
So bowling is a sin now too?
BTW Why can't he tell you how to run "your church" (Its not really yours) since you presume to come here and tell us how to run our lives?

Thats one reason we left our Apostolic Church besides the fact it was really small, was the Standards, you know how they believe and you know they know how they believe, but they do small stuff to ride the fence like cut there hair alittle or get manacure and pedicures done but preach against makeup.
I had a friend that went to a UC church nearby. He had a TV for years. I found out others did too though they only did stuff like watch NETflix and MMA fights over the Internet....
All the while looking down on other Oneness churches

Is Miniature golf a sin now too?
Are you sure?

yes. in fact the bible is ultra clear that pornography is a sin.

I distinctly remember as a teenager listening to a young preacher preach at Louisiana camp meeting where in one breath he was condemning to hell Pentecostal saints and preachers who played golf then in the next breath told a story about something that happened while he was either working out or playing handball at the gym.
It was kind of funny because you could tell as soon as he told the gym story it dawned on him it was kind of absurd in the wake of his golf tirade. He paused, collected his thoughts, then proceeded to do a terrible job of trying to explain why golf was a sin but spending time at the gym was not.
Keep in mind this was in the 70's before golf was pretty much universally accepted as being ok to participate in.

Our pastor during the 80's pretty much felt that ANY public sport or activity (which by definition included any activity which was done alongside people who were not in the church) was a sin, yet discovered he enjoyed downhill skiing. Guess which activity wasn't preached against? Now I didn't complain insomuch that I loved downhill skiing also, but anyone who hadn't drank the cool-aid, and there were a few, could see how ridicules it was.
Can we all agree that the bible is very clear on sexual depravity?
