View Full Version : Have you been told you were going to Hell?

I was told I was going to hell for wearing shorts that came down to my knees.

I was told I was going to hell for listening to contemporary Christian music. I admit it, I liked Michael W Smith, Amy Grant and Petra.

I was told I was going to hell If I did not believe that Acts 2:38 was the plan of salvation and that anybody who didn't follow it was damned to hell.

I was told that I was going to hell if I didn't follow the holiness standards and believe that anyone that didn't follow them were damned to hell.

Several times the person was giddy. They could not contain themselves. They were ecstatic about someone suffering for all eternity if they would not obey their words. Kind of seemed like the wrong spirit and a huge power trip.

Has any one else gone through this?

I was told several times by different men I was going to hell because I am a woman that carries the gospel...

Luke 19
39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto Him, “Master, rebuke thy disciples.”

40 And He answered and said unto them, “I tell you that if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”

Yes, when we left the oneness sect that meant we were leaving the truth and therefore going to hell.

That's been over 20 years ago though so the 'you're going to hell' thingie has died down somewhat.

At first one is invited to taste and see that the Lord is good. Once hooked then everything is sin. For me it was the tithing of money. I was in violation of God's word. Of course the usual stuff like t.v.- facial hair, missing a service and the list goes on.

There needs to be alternatives to choose from. One may have to move to escape tyranny.

What do they think a prophetess does? She speaks for God!!

I remember that time well. For us, the "your going to hell!" part wasn't about leaving our specific church, rather the greater sin was "disobeying the man of gawd!" in the process.

Yes. But I'm thankful for it. Every time I've heard this said, I've examined my motives and tried to confess before God that I want my heart to be right. I've also had to rethink many things and make many adjustments. No man can know for sure... but if someone is sincerely concerned that I'm going to Hell and a brother or sister in the faith enough to tell me... I'm thankful.

There are better ways to say things than to scream it at the top of your lungs in the church parking lot. This is usually how it happens. I have never been sat down in kindness and love and been told that I need to reevaluate my life.

It takes a certain kind of spirit to tell someone that they are going to hell and laugh in their face because they are so happy.

I think that many just don't know how to communicate. Spiritual immaturity abounds. They normally mean well.

The whole reason I brought up the subject is that usually the person who condemns everybody to hell is lacking love.

Jesus loves everybody. That is why when I talk to people about Jesus I try to have the most loving spirit. I am straight with them that certain things are wrong, sinful and displeasing to God.

Yelling or screaming at someone will most likely alienate them. They will see that you do not have the love that you claim. They will more than likely walk away and be less receptive of anyone else who tells them about Jesus.

Unfortunately, when a preacher rebukes sin and sinners, they often think of it as "that mean old hatemonger was screaming about how I'm going to hell if I don't do what he says, totally unchristian-like, he should have made every effort to make me feel good, then I could have politely told him he was a religious nutcase but thanks for the concern, but because he's being all stupid and mean like those Westboro Baptist Church scumbags I just flipped him off and told him and his god to bite me."

When in reality the 'mean ole religious hatemonger' was just doing what God told him to do - cry aloud, and spare not, and show my people their sins.

Jesus told a lot of people they were going to Hell. If one does not understand this they cannot be saved. You have to admit you are a lost sinner worthy of Hell. What does it mean when we tell some they need TO BE SAVED?

Saved from what?

Maybe I did not explain myself. When you witness to an unsaved person you are trying to help them.

When a person has obeyed Acts 2:38 and cleaned up their life, it is a different story.
Having a minister scream you will burn in hell where you belong because you are in the privacy of your own home and you wear shorts that come down to your knees.
To me that seems ridicules.

True. There are many mere "hirelings" in the ministry. They don't spend the time in consecration to God to get to the solid meat of the word. They just holler and yell. To me most Apostolic Preachers all sound the same.

yes but what about the screaming?

I have never heard a preacher - in person - actually 'scream' at anyone, or anything.

I have heard preachers 'cry aloud', and 'lift up the voice', but never screaming.

I HAVE heard atheists, pagans, and others literally SCREAM at Christians, though.

Jesus fed some 5000 people. In the open. As a conclusion to some public teaching. I wonder how loud his voice was?

I wonder how loud Jonah was, walking through the city of Ninevah, preaching 'In 40 days the God of Israel is going to kill every one of you and destroy your city.'

Well you are right. I had one Apostolic Pastor that I equate with the "lash out" style of preaching. Hollering, yelling. But in your personal talks with him he was kind and well mannered.

He said "Hell", YOU said "Eternal Torture"

Hell in the bible really refers to the abode of the Dead and you can be sure a LOT of people went to hell.

As for "Eternal Torment", Jesus DOES teach some sort of Eternal damnation of the unrighteous. Whether that is torture or not is beside the point. It's Eternal.

Yeah some people are so spittin ignorant!

I remember in high school being accused by a few black guys that I didn't think black women are beautiful and that I had bought into Hollywood's portrayal of beauty.

If they could have thought of it at the time, they would have condemned me to hell for "liking them _____ with the thin strips of baloney for lips and no ___ !"

Truth be told, I never liked big butts on anyone of any ethnicity and tried to state my case, but was shouted down.

I laugh now, but the group dynamics of the situation was actually terrifying.

When we FIRST joined the church and I was a young teen I remember being this ignorant. Granted, there was no racial component in our particular church at the time, but when it came to condemning people to hell (usually just THINKING they were hell bound without physically telling them) it was based on every stinkin rule we had picked up without ANY wisdom as to what the principle behind that rule was -IF there was even one.
