KWSS, What a wonderful message. I loved the preaching. I don't care who preached it, it was good. And so true and timely.
A few days ago, my ggdaughter, age 5, mentioned Holloween.
I said, "Mammaw doesn't like Holloween. She asked why.
I told her, "It is the Devil's night."
She looked at me in shock. "Mammaw, you don't believe that there is a real Devil, do you?"
"Oh yes, honey, there is a real Devil."
"Aunt Sara, told me a story about the Grim Reaper, is that the Devil?"
"Well, the Devil likes to kill people, but he is more than that."
Soon, I plan on starting with Adam and Eve and tell her the whole story. I don't know what her mother, (my granddaughter) will say, but she loves me and I love her so I think we can work it out.

David, you're little girl doesn't know that there is a real Devil????
Does she think that Santa Clause is real? And the Easter bunny?
My little ggdaughter is super, super intelligent. I'm sure that she will understand what I am saying. I don't sugar coat things.
She was comparing the Devil to the grim reaper. How scary is the grim reaper? Was that a story a little girl should hear?

She does, but here's the thing, I told her. IMO it's the parents role and responsibility to discuss these things, not relatives or other people
I had to have a talk with my mother, because over a year ago she told my daughter (who wasn't even 3 at the time) that girls should only wear skirts or dresses.
It wasn't your place to discuss your beliefs on Halloween, and it wasn't my mother's place to discuss what my daughter should/shouldn't wear. That's the role and responsibility of the parents.

Yes, I agree. It is the role of the parent. However, the last time I tried to talk to my granddaughter, (the little girls mother) she sounded like she was an atheist. So am I to let my little ggdaughter grow up to be an atheist?
A little girl that watches everything I do? Asks me all kinds of questions and soaks up information like a sponge? Would rather help me cook and gather eggs than just about anything else they ask her if she wants to go or do.
I'm sorry, but I have to get the Word in her, and if they don't like it, they can tell me. And I will tell her the truth. Some things I will tell her, "maybe you can't understand that now, but when you get older you will."
When she get's older, I might not be here to tell her.
I know what you mean about getting after relatives for teaching wrong things. I got after my mother in law for telling my children scary things. But I can't imagine anyone, even my granddaughter not wanting me to tell her about Jesus. And as inquisitive as she is, I would have to tell the other side of the story also.

it sounds to me like the little girl started the conversation , so in that case I have no problem with what you told her. You gave her an honest answer to an honest question. As far as any further teaching, I do think you need to clear that with her mother first. Not because she shouldn't be taught. But because you don't ever want to close any doors with her mom. You also want to be able to reach HER :)

I don't have an issue with passing out candy or having kids dress up in costume. What things started out as means nothing to me. The swastika started out as a symbol of good fortune and wellness, but I don't see people today reclaiming what once was theirs. Yet when something starts out with bad intentions, people want to hold on to that. I don't, and I won't.
Eating meat offered to idols means nothing to me either.

We live in a very nice, mostly Mormon, neighborhood and there is quite a bit of trick or treating here. I suppose I could slap every kid who comes to our door on the head and rebuke them for being the hell spawn of satan that they are all pretending to be.
Then we will give them our normal, very generous, portion of candy that we are known for. :)
Oh yes, besides the candy all the little kids make sure to stop by and see what our dogs are dressed up as (a monkey and an elephant this year). It is a tradition on our block.

Great job Renee even though we have disagreed on somethings I have to stand with you on this one. If someone ask a question you a spiritual question you should do your best to give an honest answer. No one has ever been hurt by knowing there is an enemy of their soul seeking their destruction. How can you tell of Jesus and not warn of the devil? That is like telling of heaven without warning of hell. VERY LOPSIDED!!! The devil is just as interested in the young as in the old. My niece has a friend that that claims to see and feel spirits and they are both around 10-11 yrs old someone needs to warn that child before she gets possessed.

Timmy, get your story straight.
I never told her that the Devil would kill her. Now let's back up.
She said, “Aunt Sara told her a story about the grim reaper. Was the Devil the grim reaper.”
I said, “Uhh I don't know about that, but the Devil likes to kill people.”
Is it that you, Jimmy don't believe there is a Devil? Or do you not believe that he 'comes to steal, kill, and destroy," but don't tell her that there is a real Devil
Aunt Sara could tell her about the scary grim reaper, which was probably full of fantasy and lies, but don't tell her that there is a real Devil?
They see all kinds of scary things on TV, but don't tell them there is a real devil. Not one with a red suit and horns, but may be lurking, in evil thoughts, hate, greed, lies.

I don't have an issue with passing out candy or having kids dress up in costume.
Nope, me neither. The acts of those things themselves aren't harmful.
What things started out as means nothing to me. The swastika started out as a symbol of good fortune and wellness, but I don't see people today reclaiming what once was theirs.
Completely agree on this, too. My family was once non-Christmas, and once I came of age, I decided this was my very stance on the issue. Christmas today - while still very commercial - is also very "Christian" in its celebration of Jesus Christ. There's a reason some atheists and Muslims and non-Christians don't like the holiday. It's not because it's a celebration of Saturnalia. It's because it's a celebration of Jesus Christ.
Yet when something starts out with bad intentions, people want to hold on to that. I don't, and I won't.
Eating meat offered to idols means nothing to me either.
Okay now - here's my issue w/ Halloween. What is it a celebration of? There's still a "darkness" and spiritual element to it. Death (skeletons, spiders), spirits (ghosts, witches) - no matter how fantasized and caricatured it may be - are still at the center of this holiday. It's not a celebration of "good things" it's a celebration of ghoulish things.
Yes, there's nothing wrong with a 5 year old dressing up as spider man and asking for candy. But there's still "spooks" and "goblins" that are a part of this night. For that reason, we have decided that we won't celebrate Halloween with our children, no matter how innocent the act of dressing up and begging for candy.
That doesn't mean we will criticize those who do. But when asked about Halloween, I do have to be honest and say it's something we choose not to celebrate - because at the heart of it today, it doesn't celebrate "good things." I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the Devil's night...but...on the other hand, if a 5 year old has been told fantasy stories about the grim reaper, why shouldn't she know about the reality of the enemy of our souls?
It must be so difficult being a loving grand-parent who wants to see her grand-children and great-grand-children come to know Jesus. I agree w/ ndavid, I'd be careful not to tread on too many topics that might be "distractions" and cause fissures in the family - I'd probably focus more on the good news than on personal convictions. But only Renee knows her family dynamics, so hopefully it will be a productive conversation that will make her ggdaugther think down the road.

Go ahead, tell her about Jesus, but your views on Halloween, Christmas, Easter and the rest should be left to her parents. Tell her the Gospel story, that's fine. But leave the rest, and your opinion of it, out of the discussion.
My grandparents, who were not 'religious' by any stretch, had NO problem telling ANYONE what they thought. Little kids, grown adults, you name it. If they had an opinion, and felt you needed to know it, then you heard it.
I think we're blowing things out of proportion here... I've had to deal with 'grandma' telling my kids Halloween was just fine... they asked me, I explained things to them, and they learned that Grandma's opinions on religion are irrelevant. Not that I told them THAT, but over the years, studying scripture on their own, they all came to that same conclusion.
It's not your place to tell her you don't like Halloween, and especially to tell her it's the devil's night.
I'd have been really upset if I wasn't in church and was planning on taking my daughter out to get candy on Halloween, only to have some family member tell her it's the devil's night.
Of course you'd be upset, just as if (in the same situation) some family member told your child they needed to be saved by the Lord Jesus or wind up in hell.
The girl mentioned Halloween, then was told her GG didn't like it. Of course the girl is going to ask why. IMO, that statement should have been left out. Thankfully, none of my grandkids will ever do the Halloween thing, as all my children believe we should avoid pagan holy days.
IF, tho, one of my grandkids were to come visit and ASK ME what I thought about Halloween, I would have no problem telling them I didn't 'do' Halloween, because it's pagan and not of God. They'd get a history lesson (suitable for their age) from Samhain to All Hallow's, from druid to pope, from then to now.

That's fine....here's what you and someone else who posted something similar missed....the girl didn't ask what Renee thought about Halloween. If someone asks a question, I'm fine with it being answered. That's not what happened here. She didn't ask anything until Renee opened her mouth and said, "I don't like Halloween."
Of course after that, any kid is going to ask their favorite question, WHY?
I stand by my earlier statement that it wasn't Renee's business to volunteer that information. I'm pretty sure she did it intentionally, knowing that question would be asked.

I do not believe grandparents should undermine parental authority. However, I do not see how expressing your opinion on a matter like Halloween or whatnot is a big deal. Now, if she had said 'you know, your Momma is whacked and doesn't know anything, and you shouldn't listen to her' then yeah, I can see that being a problem.

There are no doubt many arguments about everything from Christmas, Easter, to the dreaded Halloween - I have heard them all, and understand the abstaining from such, and I have no problem with that at all.
That said, I have been in and involved in Church's that allowed Christmas, and some sort of variation on Halloween (like a Harvest Party) - God still moved in our Church, folks still got saved, etc.
Not sure..

I don't know about everyone else, but each year after Thanksgiving, we bring out the old, fake evergreen tree and put it up in the living room to worship at Christmas. We even put gifts around the base of the tree, and wrap it in dazzling lights and other wondrous Christmas decor.

In Bible School, there was a guy who was very vocally against any holiday...especially Christmas. He would rant on about Christmas trees and how Christmas is a demonic, pagan holy day.
So a few days before Christmas break, we broke into his dorm room and set up a small, 2ft Christmas tree, complete with lights, musical carols and fake gifts, on his desk. :treegifts
I don't think it was a holy anger that he had when he opened the door to find the pagan altar set up in his room. :lol It stopped him from ranting on about pagan holy days though.

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.
Does that include pagan celebrations and holy days?

Every time I tell people I do not celebrate Christmas something strange happens.
These people that always tell me how much they love God and their fellow man become incredible angry and start telling me that Christians have to celebrate Christ's birth.

Does that include every single other part of life? You could use that verse to single out "pagan celebrations and holy days" and I could argue to expand it to everything else. Food, clothes, homes, cars, modern conveniences, sports, and on and on.

Meh, I don't get angry or believe we have to celebrate Christ's birth. I doubt there's anyone who really believes Jesus was born on December 25th.

Then what are they celebrating? Santa Claus? And using Jesus as an excuse?

Absurd. You can still celebrate the birth of Christ at that time.
FTR, I celebrate Festivus, instead of Christmas, and tell stories of Belsnickel.

I have no idea what thread it was -it is several years old, but someone posted a picture of Steve Epley at another AFF members home, sitting on a sofa next to a Christmas tree.
He can speak for himself but I know he is a big time "No Christmas!" guy yet wasn't offended at the pic.

So, does it include pagan holy days and their customs, or not?
The fact that you can apply that verse to anything under the suns means either that verse has no actual meaning, or else it means you didn't answer my question.

As a kid I always imagined that I was Dr. Loomis.

I always thought that Halloween 2 was the scariest of the bunch, but that may just be from combing a sadistic serial killer with a dark hospital setting. Although Michael Myers should have never come back for Halloween 4 (Halloween 3 should never have been made) since he was thoroughly killed in the 2nd. Shot 6 times at the end of 1 and falling off a balcony, then shot in the head AND doused in flame at the end of 2, which all took place the next day.

I did. My goodness, Michael was shot multiple times (again) including by a cop with a shotgun which showed the round exiting his back, at the end of 4.

I did see an alternate ending of Rob Zombies Halloween where Michael was shot by several police officers who unloaded their revolvers into him and it CLEARLY showed him dead.
