We have purchased some heavily wooded property that has never had a garden. So, we are working on starting a garden there.

I have a new appreciation, and admiration for my ancestors! We rototilled up the area where we are putting the garden, but now I have to go back through by hand, and pull out all the rocks, weeds, roots, grass, twigs by hand. I spent two hours yesterday with a steel rake, hoe, and pitchfork, and I was EXHAUSTED!

How did they do it? I can't imagine the exhaustion that you would feel working like this all day, day after day! I only did it for two hours.

I still haven't planted yet. I'm trying to recover today from the efforts of yesterday.

Has anyone started a garden from a forest floor before? Any tips? One good thing is that we have about 2 feet of beautiful top soil to work with.

get rid of all leaves/needles, as they contain acids that will inhibit your garden

We've done some gardens from scratch. Not from a forest floor though. Do you have a lot of roots in there?

I don't envy you, not one bit!

Ha! That's work like finding a needle in a haystack!

So, I went in with a steel rake, and pitchfork, and scraped out as much as possible. Still, after raking the entire garden area twice (20x20') there were tons of roots still poking up out of the ground, but at least the major needles, leaves, roots, rocks, and grass roots were for the most part gone. I decided that I would just worry about the row where I was planting, and leave the space between the rows work to be done later.

Someone messed with the "new post" button a while back, and now once you read a post (or even post on it), it disappears from your new post view, and leaves only the ones you haven't read. Strange I know... I kinda liked it the way it was before!

Back to the topic: We took out the trees that were blocking the sunlight, so we have full sun on the entire garden. The sun moves across the garden east to west, and the rows go east to west. Pine trees make up the huge part of the forest on the place, with a few fir. No deciduous trees at all.

I spread some dolamite lime over the garden area yesterday. I've heard that helps neutralize the acid from the pine trees.

I liked the way it was before too (for new posts). I wondered what happened.

ha ok, at least i'm not losing it :lol ya the lime will help; raised a whole pumpkin patch that way. you can add lime to the water if you get any acidosis indications. good luck! :D

Thanks! I hope your garden does well! There is nothing like fresh tomatoes from the garden! Store bought ones just taste like cardboard!!! And watermelon is a real treat to have out of the garden too!

I was able to plant carrots, peas, onions, kale, spinach, chives, and beans. I am waiting for the weather to warm up a bit more before I put in tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, corn and potatoes.
