Deactivated for last weekend's due to being indicted over whipping his 4-year old boy with a switch that left welts and cuts on his back and legs.
He was reactivated by the Vikings yesterday and is able to play with the time while the legal process moves on. Shortly after the press conference, Radisson Hotels pulled its sponsorship of the Vikings because of the issue.

I was whipped with a switch by my father a few times. Mostly he used a belt or a paddle, but there were a few times he used a switch. I had welts, but no skin was broken, no cuts were made.
Obviously, today's generation has turned against spankings and this kind of discipline, as evidenced by the thousands of reader comments against Peterson on ESPN and other news sites.

You believe that was child abuse? I do believe it was excessive, but not sure I'd label it abuse. Now if there was a pattern or this wasn't the first time it happened, then I'd consider it abuse.

If the spanking left bruises and welts for days to come, I would say it is bordering on child abuse. I do believe the point of spanking is to make the child understand what he did was wrong, but to leave marks/welts/bruises that take days to heal up, that is moving past just dealing with wrong, in my opinion.
Now, I wasn't on the jury, and certainly don't know all the evidence or facts of this situation.
While we spanked our children, we certainly never left evidence, and after the spanking, we hugged our children, and talked to them for a long time about the reasons why they were spanked. Our spanking was done in love to teach them right from wrong.
Many times though I have seen spankings carried out in deep anger. I would say that if you cannot spank your child without doing it in a sense of love, perhaps you need to find another way to discipline your child. Spanking in anger will leave marks, welts, and pain far beyond just the spanking.
Our children still say to this day that they would much rather the spankings from us than a talk, because the talk lasted longer, and was the part that really dealt with the issue. I believe the most effective discipline is when you combine a spanking, and a talk, as they both work hand in hand. Soon, it comes to a point where a voice raised, or a certain look will do the trick, and spankings are no longer necessary. The children will learn to respect discipline given in love.

I agree. From the written reports, it certainly reads as though he lost control and was excessive in his "whipping." I did hear and read that Peterson told his ex-wife and the police that he does speak to his children before spanking them to tell them what they did wrong and why they were being disciplined.
I remember always having some red marks after getting spanked, IMO it was unavoidable if using a belt or other object. I don't believe I was abused. Typically my parents gave no more than 5 or so hits with a belt, paddle or switch.

Though its not always convenient. Psychologists recommend all spanking with an object and not the hand. The hand should not be feared, but the object it grabs.

Also, while it seems like some kind of double jeopardy, it is just bringing a charge, not adjudicating it--conceivably, the DA could refuse to prosecute, and the next (or next but one, etc) GJ could re-indict, etc. Weird, huh.

Much A'do About Nothing... at least that is what I hope comes from this circus-- nothing.hmm. I have seen satan use an extreme example--of discipline, in this case--to further the aim of damping down truth before...my guess is that this is all to give the next kid due a switching some ammo, and/or cause the next parent due to give a kid a switching pause, Hou's comment notwithstanding for a serious parent, i don't think? Anyone ever raised or know of a good kid raised w/o a switch? Hmm

i believe in Texas a DA can bring charges to a grand jury as many times as he wants. further only the procecution presents information. there is no representation for the defendant.
the reports I hear is that he used a "tree branch" not a switch. the child was left with open wounds including one on his scrotum.... that kid is scard for life, and by scard, i mean he can point to his skin and say "see this? This is where my daddy beat me with a tree branch".... not emotional scars.... which i am sure he also has.
I dont know if AP did this out of the evil heart of an abuser or from the ignorance of one who has no parenting skills and is repeating the mistakes of previous ignorant generations, but i know what he did was against the law, horribly wrong, and has left a four year old baby with physical scars he will carry for the rest of his life....
I hope its ignorance that can be corrected and I hope AP spends the rest of his life making up for it.
oh yea, the beating included stuffing leaves in the kids mouth.

I read that AP did speak to the grand jury. Here in AZ the law requires the defense to be provided notice of and presentation to a grand jury.

As much as I disagree with the 49ers keeping Ray McDonald on the field playing, even though he was arrested for beating his pregnant girlfriend -- at least they've been steadfast and haven't waffled.
The Vikings have decided they made a mistake and have put AP on the "Exempt List," which means he's barred from all team activities, ie practices, games, meetings, etc.
I also heard on ESPN radio that Greg Hardy, a player for the Carolina Panthers, was going to be reactivated since AP was reactivated. Greg Hardy has actually been found guilty by a Judge for beating his wife, but some part of the law allows him to also be tried by a jury and that won't happen until early next year.
It's becoming a circus. And while I agree a person should be considered innocent until proven guilty, football is a privilege, not a right.
My 2 pennies: If any player is arrested, they should be off the field until it's resolved. They can attend team meetings, workout and practice with the team, but cannot play in a game until the legal process is over. That would end this dumb waffling going on with the Vikings and Panthers right now.

Unless the league suspends them without pay, yes, they continue getting a paycheck. Peterson right now is getting paid over $650,000 per week to not be around the Vikings.

I understand your point. Perhaps I should have said I'm not ready to call Peterson a child abuser for one time where he obviously got carried away and injured his son. You are correct that, legally speaking, the number of times a crime is comitted doesn't make it any more/less a crime.

Im not ready to call him one either
Here is the problem so far as I see (and I could be wrong), He is justifying it. In fact he makes it sound as if he would do it again
That does not make him an abuser and to be honest I don't believe a spanking is abuse.
However, when you go beyond something like a spank to injury, it's wrong.
Second, a lot of times parents hit out of anger, not out of discipline. They do it to punish.
Punishment is not necessarily discipline. Discipline teaches.
The damage done makes me wonder if he did not do it out of anger

Watched NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's presser. They announced the presser at 11am for a 3pm start....in a mid-town Manhattan ballroom. Consequently, the room had a TON of empty chairs. Not sure if it was planned this way to avoid a full room, or if people decided not to go. From the views I saw on the NFL network, there were at least 5 to 7 rows of 15 to 20 chairs each which were empty.
Three days ago they promoted a female to head the NFL's public relations department. :lol They also hired three female domestic abuse experts to offer guidance to the NFL. Now Goodell's announce the NFL will be funding the hiring of 25 more phone operators for a national domestic abuse hotline and will be donating funds to another national domestic abuse organization.
He's answering questions from the press now, and evading a couple tough questions.
One question was how he can claim "ignorance isn't an excuse" when suspending the head coach of the Saints a couple years ago, yet Goodell himself claims ignorance with regards to the Ray Rice situation. He claims he didn't know about the elevator video and didn't see it. He claims he wasn't told everything by Ray Rice. He was then asked why he should be allowed to keep his job when the coach was suspended. Goodell responded by saying, "well, I admitted I was wrong." Then proceeded to give the bullet list of things the NFL is doing now.
Another question was about the Ray Rice issue. In a recent television interview, Goodell claimed Rice wasn't clear about what happened in the elevator. After the interview aired, Rice's attorney stated that Rice says that's not true. The question was asking what Rice said which Goodell claimed wasn't clear. He avoided the question by claiming the matter was under appeal and he couldn't talk about it. Then the reporter said, well that's really not being transparent as Goodell promised to be, and what Rice said doesn't affect the appeal. Goodell again said he couldn't answer the question and moved on.
Asked if Goodell still believes no one in the NFL offices saw the video, he said no one saw it. So the law enforcement person who gave the Associated Press the email and voicemail from someone in the NFL offices just made it up I guess.
Goodell was asked why he only gave a 2-game suspension to Rice, and how he could claim the new video contained new information when the police report which Goodell admitted to seeing stated Rice punched his fiance. Goodell blamed the current collective bargaining agreement and said he wasn't able to do anything more. Yeah. So how then was he able to give an indefinite ban right after the new video came out.
Sorry, watching him, hearing him...I just don't believe anything he says about the Ray Rice issue.
A TMZ reporter asked how Goodell could claim the huge NFL security department and legal team tried to get the full video and failed, yet it took TMZ just one phonecall to get it. Goodell just smiled and said he couldn't answer that, but TMZ could. The reporter tried a follow up, but the handlers shut him down and moved to another reporter.
My bovine excrement meter is off the charts. Just cannot believe Goodell.

Regarding AP: he abused his kid and deserves to be kicked out of the NFL and lose visitation rights until he has completed some sort of program or counseling--at the very LEAST.
If my husband ever beat any of our children with a tree branch and left cuts and bruises with every hit (there were a lot of hits, btw...we're not talking about a couple of swats), hit them in their privates and stuffed leaves in their mouths...sorry, but I would take the kids and leave until he had prayed through and talked to some wiser men about how to handle his anger and discipline with restraint. In fact, that would probably be grounds to remove his right to discipline whatsoever. If you have a problem with your temper, you shouldn't be disciplining children.
AP's actions were absolutely out of control, abusive, and disgusting. There's no loving discipline found in any of that, and there is certainly nothing Christlike in a loss of control like that. That is an angry, out-of-control parent taking their emotions on their kid.
And the kid is FOUR. FOUR. We aren't talking about a strapping, strong teenager fighting with his father. We're talking about a four year old up against a meaty, muscly, football-playing man. (I use that last term lightly).
This is possibly a pattern of behavior for AP, which is important to note. He has a son by another woman, who has texts where AP was apologizing for injuring the kid's head, and said something along the lines of his son's head hit the carseat when he was spanking him in the car. There are photos in Google images that show where the hit cut enough to leave a scar. The reason he wasn't charged, apparently, is because it was indirect. The scar wasn't caused by AP hitting him in the head.
I don't personally know a single Christlike man who would treat a child like AP "disciplined" his son. The ones who do are those who are known for their tempers and their lack of ability to control themselves when they get mad. That isn't a Christian quality. Last time I checked, the fruits of the Spirit are supposed to be evidenced in our lives at ALL times; we don't get to throw them out the window when we're dealing with our children.
>>Love. Joy. Peace. LONGsuffering. GENTLENESS. Goodness. Faith. MEEKNESS (strength restrained!). Temperance. There's no law against ANY of that.<<
