I need a better camara. I am wanting to get a digital SLR cheap. My problem with consumer digital cams is the shutter speed and the time it takes to store the image on the disk/card.

This is a slightly older model but it comes with two lens

Evolt E-500 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=136561&WT.mc_n=67&WT.mc_t=U&cm_ven=COMPARISON%20SHOPPING&cm_cat=PRICEGRABBER&cm_pla=DATAFEED-%3EPRODUCTS&cm_ite=1%20PRODUCT&cm_keycode=67)

The sale price is $609 and that is the cheapest I have seen anywhere with both lenses. I don't want to spend the money but this is a deal that won't come again soon.

What do you think?

Really? Awesome. The reason I need a cam like this is not the resolution but speed mostly though the zoom lens on this one helps a lot

This is my current cam

This camera is going to be so much fun! I charged up the battery and then played with both of the lenses tonight. I'll have to show you the pictures tomorrow (I have to get to bed. Have an all day meeting to go to tomorrow so I need to be rested)

I was looking for something that didn't have the lag time when you take a picture that my old digital did. That's why I went for the Digital SLR.

This is the camera that I've been working with for several years now. At the time that I got it, it was state-of-the-art. Now it's a disposable. Oh well.

So, you see, it's not a bad little camera. But this new one has so many more capabilities.

And lucky for me, I've already got a few jobs lined up where I will get paid to do photography (a wedding, a set of senior pics, and a set of pics for a girl entering the Miss Ohio contest). So I can use that money to pay off the camera. That was the reason I didn't mind using their 0% financing for 18 months deal right now. I didn't think I'd get a better deal on the camera. I'm told that this price will only last until Sunday tho. And it's ONLY online. So if you want it, you might want to get it ordered.

Do NOT order the package deal that includes the camera bag. The camera and lenses, etc., will not fit in the bag they offer. No way, no shape, no form. Impossible. Just order the camera. Then go buy a bag somewhere else. But be prepared to get a good sized bag.

yes, she is my cousin. Actually, she is my cousin's daughter. Her daddy is Mexican.

But I'll tell you the truth. She is not any darker than my grandmother was. And she was pure white (so she says. I do our genealogy and have my doubts about that since her grandparents owned a Virginia plantation with slaves - shame on them!!!)

So Jessica really has the darker skin from both sides of her parentage. The dark eyes could have come either from her dad or from her great-grandma (my grandma).

Prax,

I don't know anything about that camera but I can tell you this - try not to fall in the rapids and go over a small waterfall if you are ever in Scotland and have your digital camera in your shirt pocket.

The ten or fifteen minutes until you escape your deadly circumstances clutching to the side of the waterfall are too many minutes for your camera to be underwater.

Although my camera dried out and continues to take pictures something messed up in the circuit board or wiring and the battery will not keep a charge. I thought it had just ruined the battery and bought a new one but it does the same thing. You can charge it up and immediately upon unplugging it the camera will show the battery almost depleted and you can only take a handful of shots before it goes dead. Arghhhhhh..

At least since the new camcorder got completely washed away into the Loch I didn't have to worry about whether it would work again or not.

Prax, I'm experimenting with settings right now. I've played with it for a couple of hours today. Lots of fun! I suppose I will use a big variety of settings, depending on what shot I want to get at the wedding.

Did you know that you can set the camera up to take pics in Sepia tone? And a whole host of other intensities as well. That is going to be fun to play with.

I took some photos today of my lillies using different settings for each one. It was pretty amazing how different each shot looked even tho they were all taken with the same lense, from the same spot. Unfortunately, by the time I got around to doing this, it was getting towards dusk. So I'm going to go out tomorrow when the sun is bright and see what happens.

You didn't get the camera bag that came with the package deal, did you?
Did you buy your camera at the store or online? I bought mine in the store, but we ordered it online, then I picked it up immediately at the store. If I had just bought it through the store, it would have cost me $90 more than ordering online. The store here was great about working with me on this.

I picked it up at Circuit City instead of ordered it online. It was 90 off and saved shipping. It did not come with a bag. So I had to get one separate. The cam was 609$ before tax. The only problem I have is focusing with the zoom lense at far distances sometimes and seeking the AF stuff in the view finder out in the sun. Otherwise this camera is the best I have ever had.

I took a shot of a moving car and it was perfect. I especially like the continuous auto focus mode. Rather than what we normally do with point, auto focus then shoot, this one you can hold the button part way down on a subject and as it moves it continually refocuses..awesome! And the shutter and storage is fast.

I'm still learning all the ins and outs

You know, now that I think of it, the guy did give me a 10% discount when I bought a bag and extra battery and the memory card
This is my bag, but mine is black, the EX 160. I think the sale item was the 120

and the extreme 3 Compact Flash which is 20 Megs per second read/write...which is 133X speed. I didn't purhase their warranty plan thing. I've never ended up using those things by the time they expire

That looks identical to the camera bag I ended up getting. It was $49.00.
I had already bought their package deal which included a $39 bag and a 1G memory card for $59, so when I returned the first bag, I just added an extra $10 and got the bigger bag. The memory card on it's own was $29, so I guess I saved a few pennies. Nothing to write home about.

I'd love to see your pic of the moving car. I think I'm going to go out this afternoon and try doing that. Or maybe while the kids are playing baseball or Keith is riding his electric scooter. This is going to be so much fun!!!

Try this, put the AF on continuous focus mode, turn the dial to the setting for taking pics of moving objects. Point, push the button partway down to start the focus on the moving object and then push all the way down and hold it while following the moving object in the view finder, it will keep taking pics as you hold it down, really cool

Cool!! It's after dark right now and I live on a quiet street. But tomorrow that is going to be on my list of things to do! Seriously!!

I used the camera today and played with it a bit while taking pictures of my nieces for them to give to their dad for Father's Day. I wanted to see what kinds of differences I got using AUTO mode or Portrait Mode. I did get some nice pictures. I'm thinking I'm gonna love this new toy!

Yes, my old Sony did that too, but usually if I wanted to do that I would just use PaintShop Pro

BTW I fixed another issue. All my pics with the zoom lense were coming out blurred. As it is, with the zoom lense one small movement would mess it up.

Well I was reading through trouble shooting and there is this setting for priority release C and S...they should both be off. One was on and this caused the picture to be taken out of focus when it is in auto focus mode

Sooooo...hows the camera?

I took some pics today of a brother at a Christian Hip-Hop concert. They did it in front of a huge window that let in a lot of light. It's hard to take pics like that because the backlight makes the subject all shadow. I took some pictures in Program mode which does not use the flash. The flash often messes up pictures when there is already some light and you are far away.

I wanted to use action mode because he was moving a lot, so what I did was changed the white balance to focus on the subject more and no flash...came out pretty good
These are 15% compression and resized to a smaller size. The dark one was taken without zoom, you can tell the difference as it's harder for the automatic white balance to work..the others are action shots where I just held the butten down and took several shots...I have more but too many to post

I did a wedding but some of the shots did not come out the way I wanted. The way our church building is made there are a lot of shadows and the lighting is uneven...makes it hard to go from one area to another and have to adjust the camera real fast. I want to get an external flash, I think that might help a lot. Often when I take a shot with the flash on the subjects look ok but the background has shadows I don't want or the color is off

Trouble shooting page 171, also with the bigger zoom lense, and being further away, it's best to use a tripod. What mode are you shooting in too? If there is a lot of light it should come out good most of the time.

When it's dark and you are in auto or some other mode without flash, the camara changes some settings to allow more light to get in...when that happens the shutter stays open longer which means the slightest bit of shaking is very noticable

Your best bet is to stick with the smaller lens and not be to far away. Shoot at the highest resolution so your images are larger in file size. Hold the camera as still as possible and make sure there is plenty of light. If there is shoot in either auto or P mode. If not, make sure flash is turned on. I use continuous auto focus just in case I move or they do. If you are good with the manual focus, use continuous AF+M and then when you compose the shot and hold the button part way to focus and if the camera does not completely focus make minor adjustments with the focus ring.

You know the camera is not completely focused if the dot in the viewfinder is not solid? Also it should beep. And make sure AF illuminator is on

Really nice pics, Prax! thanks for posting them.

I apologize for the delay in responding to you. I've been swamped this week. I'm taking pics at our VBS each evening and then making a DVD for the next day of all of the pictures. I've been trying to figure out a way to be able to post the video on here so you could see them. I tried to make a YouTube thing out of it today, but it said it was the wrong kind of file. So then I tried to do it thru PhotoBucket. But again - wrong type of file. I put this together in Adobe Premier Elements so it is whatever kind of file that is. Do you have any suggestions how to do it?

This has been so much fun!! I've gotten all kinds of good pictures with this new camera. I would love for you to be able to see them!! But there are about 100 per night. so it's ALOT!!!

You don't want to use the native PE file format. Once you get it done convert it to an Mpeg or Windows Media file.

YouTube accepts video files from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones in the .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG file formats.

WMV is windows
AVI is an old standard that I think even windows media maker uses
MOV is quicktime
MPG is another standard but I don't think Windows media player uses it.

Im betting that adobe will convert to MPG and AVI

So then I went to YouTube to post it and lo and behold there is this disclaimer thing where you agree that you own all the copyrights on all the songs. Geesh!! The Veggie Tales people do, so now I can't post it on YouTube.

So then I went to Photobucket. But it has to be shorter than 5 minutes. Got me again!!

Got any more suggestions?? I'm too tired to fool with it too much more tonight, but I'll check here first thing tomorrow. Thanks!!!!!!

ok, so I said I was going to bed.................................

I just couldn't do it - at least not until I figured out how to make this work.

so let's try this. Please understand that because I was over 5 minutes long, I had to cut off the beginning and the end, so the song doesn't start right nor does the second song end right. But this will give you a little idea of what I did as far as making a DVD for VBS this week. I made one like this for every night of VBS. Tomorrow I will add pics from our carnival for closing night. And then on Sunday they can buy copies of the completed DVD for $10 each. I will donate the money then to our mission project for this year for VBS, which is to help pay for a pool for a church camp in Brazil.
