The first sister workers we ever met wore them. Women who professed were expected to wear them and when they did, it seemed they were in a different class from those who didn't. Those (few) who didn't wear them were considered to be ‘without understanding.’ As a young teenager, I thought that this was required toward salvation.
My most vivid childhood memory is of the women having to wear black stockings. There was always a lot of controversy about them, as well as a lot of rebellion, and many a good Christian girl fell by the wayside because she refused to go out in public wearing her uniform. Black stockings, you see, were only one part of this stringent category, and long skirts, long hair, and long faces - the longer the better - were other prescribed signs of holiness and submission to the will of God. (In Vain They do Worship (http://www.geocities.com/wyvainworship/index.html), by Willis Young, pp. 36-37)

In the early 1900's, black stockings were viewed as a sign of being whole-hearted and submissive. Will those who no longer adhere to this standard be lost?

When we went to Adamsville in 1984, we had two young couples who had come out of "Free Pentecost", as they called it. They had to wear dark opaque stockings and could not shave their legs when they were in the other church. I had never heard this before, but where I come from, there is no "Free Pentecost" that I know of.

Didn't you read the article?? In the late 1800's/early 1900's, women were required to wear black stockings as a sign of being whole-hearted and submissive. Black stockings are holy, modest, godly attire for women! How did women have the audacity to change this standard? I say we stick with the traditions and standards of the late 1800's/early 1900's in order to make it to heaven... just like Barb & Felicity.

Women were more holy in the those days! Therefore, we must conclude that it was their black stockings.

OR... because it was how women dressed in the early 1900's, we must conclude that we should still dress that way today... you know, to be holy & have standards & all.

They say it is a delusion, might as well make it a delusion that is simple enough for a child to understand (like the gospel was SUPPOSED to be). ;)
