How twisted is religion when one can make up a imaginary dress code yet can't believe a literal translation of the Word.

No. My post was TIC. I just think it's odd for some of you guys to put down people like snake handlers, while claiming to believe the Bible is the infallible, inspired word of God, and want to interpret it literally. The same scripture that talks about handling snakes is often used to justify requiring tongues for salvation:

Mar 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

It's a list of signs. One of them is speaking with new tongues. If that means a Christian must speak in tongues, then a Christian must also take up serpents. You first. Take a swig of Clorox, while you're at it. It won't hurt you.

Oh, not supposed to tempt God? How would this be tempting God? It is proving Him. Malachi 3:10. 1 Thes 5:21. 2 Cor 13:5. Seeing if His Word is true. What's wrong with that? What a testimony that would be to the world! Call a press conference! Live on TV! (Oh, TV, sorry. Sore spot for some!)

These folks are just keeping the traditions they have been taught. It's probably really bad to think it's wrong in their minds. If they said it was wrong and strange they would probably be accused of having a bad spirit of rebellion. Anyway, I believe that God will bless the honest heart searching and hungering for Him.

And yet, many of them have been bitten -- and harmed. Some have died. What's up with that? Not enough faith? OK, but what about the ones who are not bitten? Enough faith? Or skill and luck? They know what they're doing. They know how to hold them safely (with the occasional goof, of course).

They can't lose: When it works, it's God. When it doesn't work, it's lack of faith.

Seriously, why don't these people chug some cyanide or something? Now that would show some faith! (If it works!)

Sounds very similar to many things. The same thought process is used in faith healing sometimes....when it works, it's God....when it doesn't it's lack of faith...to some. That is when faith healing is used as idolatry in a legalistic fashion. Most of us believe in faith healing but don't say people have a lack of faith necessarily if they are not healed. But many things are this way in the church culture.

Funny, isn't it? I mean, they are blasted for taking a scripture literally but UPC women are to follow verses that someone else interprets as saying something that scripture doesn't say or they are lost.

Crazy, I tell ya.

Nope, not gonna try it.It's quite interesting to watch them prepare this medicinal cure for what ails you. It's a popular winter (cold weather) tonic.

They take a live snake, slit it while it's still alive from the neck all along the belly. They reach inside while the thing is still writhing and wriggling and pull the skin back. Then they reach inside the snake's belly and pull out the bile.

They they drain that into these little cups and mix it with some kind of Chinese whiskey in little cups. The men gulp it down in one swallow.

Fascinating to watch!

They also give this to kids who are suffering from some types of illness.

The first time we saw this was at a Chinese night market in Hong Kong. We saw this group of men all gathered around this one particular vendor and I wanted to get closer to see what it was they were all so fascinated with.

There was all these snakes in cages and the vendor had one holding it up and the men seemed very interested and excited with what was happening. I thought it was horrifying and disgusting and pulled back away and left.

Later I realized that what was going on was what I described above ..... slitting these snakes and getting the bile out of liver for medicinal purposes.

Amazing.
