View Full Version : Rare or well done?

How do you like your steaks? I like mine rare... to medium. But, now I am at a crossroads. I don't know which path to take. Sounds stupid, but, is it a sin to eat a steak that is not "well-done"?
Acts 15:28,29
For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
Was this a prohibition of blood, or was the writer addressing a cultural/religious/pagan issue of his day?

The edict went forth:
"Tell the gentiles to abstain from ...blood..."
What I'd like to know is, was it given because of the pagan practices of the day?

I used to eat it barely cooked, complete with sopping up the juices and blood with a roll. Topped of with a Guiness.
Upon my return to Christ I chose to limit that back to medium rare.
Bloody, I believe, is pushing it, if you know what the Word says, but a bit of pink is harmless.

I would not say dismiss the passage, I would say that we need to be mindful of the context in which it was written. I really haven't given this a whole lot of thought, I'll look further into this tonight when I get home. Good question Berk.

Anyone ever wonder why meats offered to idols were forbidden in Acts, but Paul said in 1 Cor 8,10 and Rom 14 that it is fine unless it is done in a pagan temple and before one with a weak conscience?
Act 15:29 KJV That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
1Co 8:4-9 KJV As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. (5) For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) (6) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. (7) Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. (8) But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse. (9) But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
1Co 10:19-22 KJV What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? (20) But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. (21) Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. (22) Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
Rom 14:14-15 KJV I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. (15) But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.

Medium Rare is the only proper way to eat a steak. I make it a point NOT to ask if the cow was sacrificed to an idol and I don't consider what I am eating as eating blood! I am just eating a properly prepared steak!

Here's my take.
The gentiles were being discussed in Acts 15. And since they came fresh out of gentile culture involving idolatry, they would best be totally away from anything to do with idols... even meats offered to idols. They would invariably be offended if they ate anything offered to an idol. But the Pauline texts about the issue explain with more clarity that meats offered to idols are still only meats, and an idol is nothing in reality. But the weak-conscienced brother, who dabbled in idolatry previous to salvation, would not understand that.
So Paul speaks of it as being an issue of spiritual growth. Meat is innocent in and of itself. Now, such reasoning cannot be applied to fornication and outright sins, obviously.
hmmm, context... why does this sound so familiar....

Medium usually to medium rare. Depends on if I have been there before and know how they cook it. Usually restaurants serve it one step lower than what you asked for. BTW how does cooking it longer mean the blood is gone? It's just cooked

Why not?
The surgery. It left me with enough room for about 4 small bites of my favorite bovine dish and maybe a couple bites of baked potato.
Also, since I have to chew my food really well before swallowing, it wears me out eating steak! LOL!
But before I had this surgery, I had to answer 'yes' to the question, 'Do I want this surgery even if I can never eat bloody steak again'.
Thankfully, I can have a couple bites and not have to abstain totally.

I think the first three (meats offered to idols, blood and things strangled) were all associated with sacrifices made to idols but I think your answer is in Romans 14, verses 13 to the end of the chapter.
"Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin."
BON APPETITNo, I don't have a bony appetite.

I went out to eat with my sisters. They both got the same cut of steak. One got it medium or medium rare -- the other sister got hers medium- well done. The steak that was medium rare was much better than the medium well one. It had more flavor and was easier to chew. I used to have mine medium well, I have been converted!
