View Full Version : Curious...do you have a phobia?!
I was mentioning this to a friend the other day...
Mine would be heights...don't do escalators or steep and long stairs because I'm afraid of falling backward. I would never be able to drive up a long and winding mountain road...no way!!
I'm petrified of driving over long bridges. Last summer we went up to the Big Mac Bridge...Sis. Barb thought she could it. Oh my...I prayed...I cried and told the toll booth sister I would need help driving back. The next day when we were ready to cross back to the other side, I thought I could be brave and do it until I saw the sign which read "High winds"...no way!! I tipped the man $5 and would have given him more if I'd had change!!
Anyone else care to share?!:(

I don't, but my daughter has a weird one.
She can't stand to see a lot of holes together. Example is a bowl of macaroni with all the ends (holes) exposed or traveling behind an 18-wheeler with pipes stacked as the cargo and all the ends of the pipes facing out (holes).

I will not climb a ladder. I love flying in planes. *shrugs*
I dunno if it's a phobia, but I hate interaction with the public. When I walk into the market I look away from the crowd immediately. I used to think that everyone was judging me.
Don't know and really don't care if they are judging me now... but I still hate public settings.

- Making/receiving phone calls!
Symptoms: rapid pulse & heartbeat, sweating, cold/shaking hands, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, stomach cramps.
UNLESS the call is from or to my husband, children, mom, one (of three) of my sisters, or one (of several) of my aunts.
- Heights (but I *LOVE* ANY roller coaster!).

I am terrified of spiders. My heart stops just seeing one. The only exception are the yellow house spiders. Now, I don't hold them, but when I kill them, I'm not shaking like a leaf...although the anxiety is there!
Snakes, on the other hand, I love!

When my son was younger, he was afraid of the vacuum. Just seeing it would send him to the couch with his feet up on it!
And something strange....he didn't like the credits rolling on the TV screen. He would watch a program, like Barney or Sesame Street, but when the time came for the credits, he would jump in my lap. If I tried putting him down, he'd start screaming....LOL!

I guess its a phobia. Ants. I can't handle it if I pick up something in the yard (like a board or rock) and ants get all over my hand. Freaks me out. Two things (I think) caused this. I saw a movie when I was real young called "Them" about ants attacking villages and eating people. And I found our house cat dead in a flower bed when I was real young. It had ants all over it. I guess that scarred me for life. No other kind of insect bothers me. Just ants. (well, except an uncle or two.) Weird, ain't it?

I don't have many fears really but I'm terrified of cockroaches! :woot I hate them! I abhor them!
I'm more scared of them than I am of snakes or mice. I'm talking about the big ones like we had in Hong Kong. I'd never seen one until we lived there.
I also hate June bugs -- the kind we have back home! Ugh! It's bad enough when these big ol' bugs crawl but they're even scarier when they fly! :woot

I'm not a fan of heights. I hate snakes. But no true phobia of either. My strange fear is that I simply cannot stand ANYTHING pointing towards my eyes.
Straws in a glass? I'll move your glass.
Pencils in a cup? I move the cup or move myself.
Things over the visor pointing back towards my eyes? Not a chance in this life.

You are right brother.....There are times when fear would like to take hold, (mostly at night and especially if hubby had to go out of town on business). Fear tries to take hold and I then have a choice to make....I have to decide whether or not I am going to give in to fear, or, if I am going to trust GOD for everything....I can't tell you how many times I have thought, "try to scare me if you like devil, but "in Jesus Name" I am going to sleep now....!!! but I'll try:
1. escalators - totally traumatic experience. My husband knows he has to go RIGHT in front of me and hold my stuff so I can hold to the rail. (did I say hold? I mean cling to that thing for my dear life) Then I nearly hyperventilate before the thing gets to the end. That is if I even get on the stupid thing - I freeze a lot at the top and stop..and won't get on - my husband has to make a couple round trips sometimes to come back and get me at the top. That is if he can find me when he gets back.
2. curbs - I cant stand to step off a curb. It's not so much the fault of the curb, it's the fear of falling that gets me. Same thing with going down steep stairs, it's the falling forward thing that gets me. I think that is the root of my escalator phobia.
3. slopes/hills - you know any kind of embankment, I cannot go DOWN them - see above for explaination. If the yard slopes, I'll be walking AROUND till I find a flat spot
4. Roaches, mice, snakes and spiders. I'm not deathly afraid of them, well snakes and spiders - well, mice too..roaches I just LOATHE. They are all nasty creatures that have the ability to seriously hurt you (snakes, spiders)
Hey, but I will go check out the "bump" in the night LOL!!!
5. Large, pressing crowds. ICK cant stand the feeling of being trapped or the "urgency" about the whole thing....
6. Water deeper than I am tall. I dont swim, wont learn how and I wont get in water deeper than say chest height. One time when I was little, my sister decided to baptize me in the pool. (4-5ft) it was deeper than I was tall - well she dropped me on the dunk....she scarred me for life.
I have more weirdness, as my dh calls it, but I'll spare y'all the details and myself the humiliation LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew I wasn't comfortable being in a big crowd, but when our youth group went to youth conference two years ago.... I flipped. Started off nervous (which was normal for me) then got anxious (usually I woulda left the crowd by this point, but didn't want to lose my group amongst the thousands), then angry at anyone who bumped me, wouldn't hold hands with my friends, then crying (uncontrolably) and shaking. One of the girls pulled me aside into a restroom and got me to semi-calm down, but for the next few hours I couldn't handle anyone being within about ten feet of me (I looked like a nut cake and the guys got the biggest kick out of walking towards me... even my pastor got some laughs). The next day before we got off the bus they asked me would I be okay and I was like "yeah, I can handle it, just don't talk about it" I did better, but no the less, flipped a little. I determined not to EVER go to a general conference EVER again..... but then I loved it and probably would, but I know I would flip:sad

As a very young boy, my first step-father used to lock me in a dark closet for punishment. It terrified me and I remember banging on the door trying to get out. A terrible memory for a boy. As a result, I developed a terrifying fear of the dark. It remained with me until just after I got saved. Jesus set me free from it and now I no longer have that fear.

:woot
June bugs terrify me too! The problem is, they don't watch where they are going!
And after speaking about how phobic I am about spiders......I'm in the shower this morning, and I have a habit of looking around to see if I have company. Sure enough, there is a yellow spider in the corner. They don't really scare me, but I don't want them moving when I'm in such a precarious situation.
I'm showering and I guess the water was splashing on his, so he's moving around in the corner...just enough to make me nervous. I'm drying off and what do I see above the bathroom door?? His brother!!!
That's it. Brother is on the move and I don't want him disappearing on me. I grab TP and get him first, then get the guy in the corner. After that was all done, I realized that I was breathing quite fast!
Was it something I said that made them come out??

Another thing I have a phobia of..........dentists. I am terrified of dentists. Just the smell of the office is enough to make me sweat. I have to go through the dental hygienist part of the college on my way to class, and I have sweaty palms by the time I get to the elevator! I have major anxiety when I have to go for just a cleaning.

Better not happen!
What is my current "phobia?" Probably the thought of not having made a difference when this life is over! :D

I love roller coasters and flying... but don't do heights if my back is not covered/closed in.... so I do not do ladders.
can handle spiders and most bugs with no problem, but can't deal with bats or rodents... and I have an old house where I have dealt with them all.
have fears of failure, criticism and the unknown...

Actually, I do have a phobia about open drawers, doors, and lifted up toilet seats. I go through the house closing drawers, closing doors, and putting toilet seats down. Not sure what irks me about it but, for the most part, I am a detail person. I saw one worse than myself: I was standing outside the main entrance to the church sanctuary and Pastor was coming my way...looked all around the hall and his eye fell on a piece of paper at the same time as mine...I walked over and picked it up...He said, "Thank-you". and walked into the sanctuary. I don't call that a phobia, just a peeve (OCD) or something like that. I am the same way. I can't stand to have cabinets, drawers, closet drawers, toilet seats, anything open, the bed unmade, etc. NOW comes the fun part -we won't talk about what it looks like behind, under, inside, etc.
I was thinking about this once (in my other life) and it hit me that I was that way with my personal life. My marriage was in shambles, it was a farce and I was living it with an "everything is okay" smile on my face because I had the fake it till you make it mentality. It wasn't that I was in denial, I just wanted to protect the one who should have been protecting me (yeah, right).
Anyway, I think that mixed with my OCD in that I felt like if someone came into my home, it could be chaos on the inside but as long as the outside looked good, no one would notice the mess!

Tamor,
This is the root of the therapy with those who truly have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and not just OCD tendencies. It is definitely a control issue. When all other areas of our lives are out of control we can control what our home/office looks like. This is where Anorexia, Bullemia, and other anxiety Disorders stem from...even the 'cutting'. When someone feels their lives are being controlled by others, by outiside circumstances, or unforseen situations...there are some things we can control.
Co-Dependency has its underpinnings in the control issue also. Many times when we can't control our own lives or situations we get over-involved in other's lives and try to control them.
Control....ouch. you hit a subject there Tamor!
Blessings, Rhoni

I have never before felt claustrophopic until my last two vacations...
One was having to walk under the 'Shark Tunnel' at Sea World, (which I assumed had to do with my phobia of being trapped underwater) and the other just recently at Trim Castle walking up the spiral stairs.
The head room was very low, the width very narrow, and the steps were extremely short, like you could only fit about half your foot on it. My heart started racing when we kept going around and around and not stopping...I wanted to freak out for a minute there, I wanted OUT!...but calmly kept going. :wacko

I'm with you. I've been on a swing already when the chain broke. It was only a little ole' porch swing - but it fell on my leg and broke it in 5 places and shattered my heel. NOPE. No swings for me.

Oh, please don't give me any more reason to worry about my kids! LOL "Okay kids! No more swings for you! No scooters, no sitting in chairs that turn/spin, no "Red Rover", no walking down stairs, no trampolines... and now NO MORE SWINGS!" haha! j/k Well, j/k about everything except Red Rover & trampolines.
