This summer will be three years ago that by chance I met an award winning science fiction author while on a trip to California. We hit it off and attended an event together. He snapped some selfies of us and posted them on FB that day.
He was a typical Californian in that at about age 50 he was extremely fit, vegan or vegetarian, earring in one ear, gets up at 3:30 am to go surfing or paddle boarding most mornings, etc, etc. He was married with 3 teenage children and lived in Los Angeles.
When we were posting our selfies to FB and we made each other Facebook friends I remember thinking to myself that once he got home and started reading a few of my posts and found out I was a Republican he would probably immediately unfriend me.
To my surprise a few weeks later I got a PM from him on FB and he said he had been reading some of my posts and he was glad to see we shared a lot of the same views. To say I was shocked was an understatement. Now don't get me wrong, he is a socially liberal Jewish man. However in other matters like the role of government, etc he is pretty conservative.
Several months after our friendship began He sent me a link to join a private secret group that is composed of mostly professional people who are in or connected to the entertainment business in California and New York. This group are "closet" Republicans / conservatives who are literally in work and social situations where publicly revealing their political affiliation and beliefs would mean the end of their careers and social life.
On this group they share stories of their experiences and post comments on events of the day in politics, liberal idiocy, et. It is fascinating. One lady posted a picture of a throw pillow on her sofa that had the Republican elephhant symbol on it. She said she bought it a few years ago but when the doorbell rings she has to go grab it and throw it in the closet so no visitor will see it. It is like living in the Soviet Union during the Cold War when you couldn't own books or objects expressing any views different than the "norm".
About a year after we met my author friend told me of an experience he had just had. He and another guy were hired to produce a documentary about a famous older person in the entertainment business. When he and his producing partner visited the man's home to begin work on the project they noticed the man had been friends with President Reagan and Nancy. The home had a lot of pictures of the man with the Reagan's and other Republican keepsakes. When they left the other producer looked at my friend in disgust and exclaimed "did you see all of that Republican stuff in there???!!!!". My friend said on impulse he looked at his producing partner and said "Yes I did and I have to tell you that I am a Republican also". He said there was stunned silence. The man took a few moments staring at him in disbelief then finally said "well.........you are still my friend". LOL!!! As if my friend had told him he had committed some horrible crime.
I never dreamed I would see such intolerance in the USA. Liberals claim to be loving in tolerant but that love and tolerance only extends to you when you think in lockstep with them.
