The Sons of God
Wherein in times past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.
Our spiritual battleground…this field of war we’re on…cannot be seen. Like a boxing match against the invisible man…in his invisible arena. Yet, his attacks come with human faces. You’ll find no wars in the annuls of history, that we can look to for strategy. And yet, our war has raged on…all around us…for 6,000 years. We fight an unseen enemy, coming at us from all sides…every day. Trying to push just the right buttons in us, to find a way in and out. A phantom foe, working in the children of disobedience, against God’s chosen people.
While there are no past wars like ours; the scriptures do give us a little landscape, to orient us. How often we forget, that we are but a mote, in the eye of the universe. For instance, there is wisdom’s testimony. This is an amazing account, of a place in time:
Or ever the earth was.
While as yet he had not made the earth.
Before his works of old.
Hard to imagine a place…a time…before the earth was created. Yet, here it is. And the only residents, appear to be God, and wisdom. Today…6,000 years after Adam…it only makes sense, that wisdom would precede creation.
Indeed, our mouths are stopped in awe, by our own microscopes. Turns out that our world…our universe…every single thing…is molecular in make-up. People are made of cells…trillions of them. Cells are made of molecules…gazillions of them. Molecules are made of atoms. Too many to count. Atoms are governed by laws of gravity and spin…weight and volume…time, charge, and space. These hidden children of wisdom are all required, to sustain the delicate, fragile balance, of life as we know it. So of course, wisdom would precede creation.
Next, there is God’s own testimony, right in the big middle of creation:
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.
This scene, is still prior to Adam. God is here laying the foundations of the earth. But notice; the population in this ether amphitheater, has exploded. Besides wisdom, now the sons of God are watching…and applauding. Long before they saw the daughters of men, and took them wives as they pleased. Before the princes of pharaoh, were checking out the beauty of Sarah. Here, the sons of God, are all still holy and united. They are all shouting for joy, at what God hath wrought. Before the war had begun…and before the curse of their fall:
I have said, ye are Gods; and all of you are children of the Most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
This is way before that fall. The sons of God…all of the sons of God…shouted for joy. The morning stars…before angel fought angel…all singing back-up in harmony.
And finally, there are two meetings, from well after the human race had begun. This is during our short 6,000 years.
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.
We’re not told how many sons of God. We aren’t told how far they journeyed, to present themselves before the Lord. Nor do we know their charge…what they otherwise do…when not attending these meetings. We do surmise: that Satan traveled from the earth to this meeting; and then, from the meeting back to the earth. To walk up and down in it.
Throughout God’s word, this amazing worm-hole briefly opens and closes…exposing the landscape. This alchemy between the physical, and the spiritual…the earthly, and the heavenly. It reveals a largeness far beyond us alone. Yet somehow, we are central…key…to the whole thing. We see Michael; contending with Satan, over the body of Moses. Or the mount of transfiguration. And Paul, turning to rebuke the imps of Satan. Those working in the children of disobedience…as carnival barkers…mocking the Lord.
In Daniel, we learn that the colossal spiritual battle afoot, is clocked in physical time. Gabriel the angel, desperately trying to reach the prophet, but thwarted 21 days by the prince of Persia. And, from a war perspective, we even see the collaboration of allies. Michael…a greater angel…coming to Gabriel’s aid, and allowing him to finally reach the prophet.
Then there are the four angels, standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds. There’s the angel of the waters…the angel of the power of fire. But in our time, perhaps none is more relevant than this prince of the power of the air, from our text.
Funny, but air is also invisible to us…just like this vast spiritual universe. We now know, that air is:
76% nitrogen
21% oxygen
1% argon
1% hydrogen
Twelve other trace gases
Water vapor
That is the complex mix we need…every second…for 70 years, plus or minus the grace of God. This air works in us. It jumps from our lung molecules, onto red blood cells, feeding life to every part of the body. Thus, scripture calls air the breath of life. The same scripture, says that the life of the flesh is in the blood. Your blood is a closed-loop system…slightly pressurized…and stretching across 90,000 miles of tubing. And it is accessible only, by the invisible air we breathe into our lungs.
Perhaps this, is the revelation that Paul is sharing with us. Though invisible; air is the perfect visual, to show us how widespread…how permeable, the domain of our enemy truly is. How large is his fiefdom?...this prince of the power of the air? On earth, it is 7 billion people large, minus the few there be that find it. Those few, are surrounded every day, by the children of disobedience. While at work…at the market…at home…at church. This global spirit is in them…at work in their spirit…and finding its way out. It bombards us from every side, through many different faces. It is why the Lord could turn to beloved Peter, and say: get thee behind me Satan. Finding its way out of Peter, in the most noble of gestures.
