Question for our resident accounting/money experts (looking at you Tithesmeister). I'm reading on IRS.gov that charitable organizations recognized as a 5013c usually file a form 990. However, I also see that there are exceptions to this filing requirement and churches/ministries seem to be in the excepted category. Am I reading these requirements right? Do churches have to file anything with the IRS? Would a ministry organized as a 5013c be "excepted" from filing the form 990?

As a retired church treasurer, I do not recall ever handling form 990. We did not send any church documents to the IRS about the church finances.
