Really... cool....

My alto is broken right now. It gave up the ghost after 27 years of playing it. It is a King Super 20. I bought it in 1979.

I have a soprano bult around 1926. Silver plated on the outside and goldwashed on the inside of the bell. It is the Chu Berry Soprano. A guy was selling it for $25 and I talked him down to $20. :)

I have a tenor which is also silver plated on the outside and goldwashed on the inside of the bell and it is a PerfekTone C Melody Tenor sax. I got it for a little under $200 off of ebay.

I am going to eventually try and find a silver plated/goldwashed alto and have a 3 piece set.

Speaking of a Sax player, you should have heard the Boston Brass play at

Denver Stanford, Jr's funeral last Saturday! It was the most unusual

funeral I have attended. Sis. Kathy Hernandez (Eli) played sax with the group

and then they highlighted her alone. Rev. Henry Wasserman, sax Bro. Sam

Kelly (Denver)trumbone, Denny Hahn, keyboard, I can't remember all the

players but it was very good!!! I am sure Bro. Stanford, Jr. would have loved

it!!:bliss :bliss

Yes, and she did! Also Henry Wasserman, who I did not know

but he reminded me of Denver Stanford, Jr. playing his saxophone.

The Bro. Sam Kelly from Denver, said that Bro. Stanford, Jr. was

talking about securing an outdoor amphi-theatre to have a Concert.

It seated 10,000. He had gone to Denver, Colo. and played with

Bro. Kelly and others and thought they could have a good concert.

Obviously, that was not to be!

I have a tenor and have played since around 1985.

The things we don't know about each other.

I have a soprano, Alto and tenor.

My tenor is a selmer (not a Mark) but my Alto is an old Cleavland (made by King Craftsmen is in small script) made by the H.N. White Co. of Cleavland, OH. It has been mine for 37 years and I bought it used in a pawn shop. I am estimating that it is over 50 years old. and my soprano is an inexpensive model by Jean Erich.

Love to play and worship while playing!

It is my favorite music though... just love to hear a good sax.

Sis. Mrs.BOOMM,

I forgot to mention the organist, Kevin Anderson, who also sang,.

"It's My Desire" and did he ever put his all into it! He said he was

Bro. Stanford's music minister. (D.S., Jr.) I think it was. There was

also a Brian Hurst, who sang and spoke. A good friend of DS, Jr.

It was really upbeat for a funeral and I liked it. I have a feeling the

deceased would have too! They did a DVD of the funeral.

Alright... we seem to be sax player rich around here. I have a problem. I have been playing the sax for 31 years now and I have never been pleased with my tone. I would like to get that warm tone that the pros can do.

Well... I decided not too long ago to go out and buy a professional quality sax.

I had my mouthpiece with me and I put my mouthpiece & reed on the new sax to try it out. It sounded just like mine. (of course mine at that time was a King Super 20 which is not a total junker either)

I then decided that I might need to start shopping for new mouthpieces. I know that the shape of the cavity in the mouthpiece is key in attaining various tonations.

So... do any of you have any suggestions as to what mouthpiece would be good for the warm smooth medlodic tone that I have searched for all this time? I still have the same beginners mouthpiece I have been using since 1979.

Actually a sax is a woodwind insturment. They make a baritone. Years ago some of those baritones where very big, larger than what is common today. They also make a keyless sax which is used for teaching.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say can it be made out of metal. A sax is definately made out of metal. The reed is what makes a sax a woodwind, strange though it may be. I remember seeing pictures of very large saxophones and thought they were baritones. They are actually contrabass saxophones and can be 7 feet tall. Here is a link to see some pictures.

I have played the Bari Sax as well (Baritone) but it was HUGE. :)

Actually... this may just be common knowledge to everyone but I found it rather interesting when I realized it a few years back.

If you play a song on the soprano sax and then pick up the alto sax and play the very same notes (leaving room for certain nuances due to the number of flats or sharps as compared to the soprano) then the notes you play wil be the alto singing part.

If you then play the same notes you played on the soprano on the tenor then you will be playing the tenor part... and so on.

Like I say... most of you may roll your eyes and say... "well DUH!!" :) But I just never thought about it until I changed horns during a choir practice several years back.

Reeds were all made of wood (well... cane actually) back then and it was a woodwind because you blew on a wood (cane) reed.

That makes oboes, clarinets, saxes etc woodwinds.

I only use plastic reeds though so I must play a plastic wind instrument. :)

I play Bari Synthetic Reeds (http://www.saxplus.com/bari-reeds.html) on my alto & tenor & Fibracell (http://www.fibracell.com/)on my soprano.

Fibracell looks like reed but it's not. It is also not a true plastic reed like the Bari. It is a composite reed.

Whoda thunk it?

Sounds like everybody is pretty much on track but I never would have thought that a sax would be made out of wood.

I can see a flute being made out of wood... but a sax? Wow...

Here is what Wikipedia says.

A woodwind instrument is a wind instrument in which sound is produced by blowing against an edge or by a vibrating reed, and in which the pitch governed by the resonant frequencies of an enclosed air column. As the name implies, such instruments were originally made of wood, but some modern woodwinds, such as the saxophone, are made of other materials.

Woodwinds do often use a wooden reed but woodwinds were once made of wood.

I have been over at ebay lusting... I mean looking... at the black lacqured saxes. :)

I have, what I think is, a 1928 Chu Berry Soprano Sax and I am considering selling it and buying a newer sax or trading it for another Soprano Sax. The Chu Berry is one great instrument but I just don't have the money to have the good rebuild that it needs.

I have held onto this horn for 15 years but I think I am about ready to just give up the prized Chu Berry for a newer model and hopefully someone will get it that has the time & money to spend making it do what it was made to do.

I have always played the alto. My current alto broke last year and I need to get it fixed. I had played it for 27 years so I guess it was a due a malfunction. It is a small problem and I need to go ahead and get it fixed.

But I like having all of them because different songs call for different tones and it is good to have the three to switch between.

My friend's daughter is 13 and had been taking lessons for a couple of years. She is being trained in classical and is really good. However, I have noticed that switching over to church music is rather "challenging" for her.... I have been helping her with that... I want my children to play all styles, but church style is what I want to be more versatile in....

I love it when several of us get together and just "jamm out"! When I was a teen, most of our youth group sang and played so that was most of our "get togethers" ... many of us still are involved in it today!

Yes'm... there is nothing like a good ol' Jam Session.

Especially with some talented artists who can read each other well... you can really do some great stuff when you get into that groove where everybody is just going with the music.

Now see, that is where you find a true musician....When you can get together and someone just starts playing music...You don't even have to know the music....You just play and it sounds like you've rehearsed it many a time. My husband and his family were liike this. They could get together and just play because they understand what eachother were going to do. It took me a while to just "jump in" with them... I have my father's saxaphones; a C melody; a Bflat soprano (the tiny one in a sax shape) and a newer alto.
I have very fundamental skills but my dad played in church for many years.
I love the sound but I lack the talent he had. He played by ear.
The two older horns were purchased from a traveling evangelist nearly 70 years ago.
