View Full Version : No Spanish? No job, teachers told

Spanish-speaking students are flooding into an Illinois school district so fast that teachers who educate in English only are being involuntarily transferred, and they believe there will come a time when they no longer will have a job.
"I know what the trend is, and it's not looking good," Valerie Goranson told the Chicago Tribune. "Even if my job was saved this year, what about next year?"
She has twice lost a teaching assignment in the Waukegan district because she doesn't speak Spanish, she said. Last year, after teaching 5th grade at North Elementary for six years, district officials moved her to Clark Elementary to make room for a Spanish-speaking teacher at North.

Well, I hate it for them, but I'm a gringo who learned Spanish....perhaps they can, too ;)
I really do hate it for them.

This does not surprise me. We have found that it's increasing hard to even get a job if you are not bi-lingual in Illinois. :(

They shouldn't "have" to.

Does someone "have" to learn how to use a computer to get a certain job? What's the difference?? Do you whimper b/c you don't know how to type, or do you go learn? Come on, people, it's not that hard!

This is America, where the native tongue is English. If I were to move to another country, I would need to learn the language. This is not Mexico!

Maybe. But it won't be the first country in the world to have more than one language.

No, it won't. However, I do not think we should have to learn a second language...the Hispanics can learn English...how hard is that? My Great Grandfather had to learn English when he came over on a boat from Greece in 1918.

If you can speak three languages you're trilingual. If you can speak two languages you're bilingual. If you can speak only one language you're an American. ~Author Unknown

Answer me this: How would knowing two languages hurt you? Thnk of all the opportunities that would open up for you. Where I work I make almost $5 more per hour because I can speak Spanish. I am not saying they shouldn't learn English. That is one of my pet peeves. But, as long as they are going to be here, it would behoove you to learn Spanish. I am thinking about learning French because we some clients that service areas in Canada that speak French. If I can learn the language I would get even more per hour.

It wouldn't hurt at all. That was not my point. However, I don't want to argue...there are pro's and con's to just about everything.

I did not realize we were arguing. I thought we were discussing. LOL! The same thing happened to me the other day with StMatt. I thought we were on the verge of having a spat and he wasn't' the least bit upset! LOL!

I can envision a day when we will speak our posts into a computer, and when someone clicks on the post they will be able to hear what and how things are being said. I wish I knew enough about programming to creat such a program. I would probly get rich! :D I know there is already software that will let people speak in a chat room to each other, but I don't know of any that combines what we are doing here with a voice feature.

Move to the U.S.A. - you learn to speak English.
Move to Canada - learn to speak English & maybe French IF you live in Quebec.

Our country is just getting handed over to the world.

Well, what should happen and what does happen are almost always two different things. It has been predicted for around the last 20 years that this would happen, and it appears the time is upon us. Hope y'all like burritos! :hypercoffee

Brother, if this were some other group of people I would probly feel the same way they do. I am in agreement with them that anyone coming here should learn English. That does not seem to be happening as much as it should among the Latino population, so what choice is there other than to learn Spanish?

Why, just the other day, I tried to get a title to a car speaking in Spanish, and lo and behold, they didn't understand me! Racism! (they must not have been required to learn Spanish...and right down the screet from "El Burrito Shop", too!)

I think the Latinos and everyone else that comes here should learn English. No doubt about it. But like you said in an earlier post, what is actually happening? If you are a car salesman, do you wait for them to ALL speak English, or do you learn Spanish so you can sell more cars? HMMMM?
Makes sense to me!

I don't sell them a car if they are here ILLEGALLY AND UNDOCUMENTED! That means that they are uninsured as was the case with my sister in Austin. The ILLEGALS were awarded money in Texas. Louisiana, as I know it, has a law against that and every state should adopt the same!

So are you going to learn Vietnamese? In large cities like Houston, we have everything in English, Spanish and now Vietnamese as well.
I say again, you need to learn the language of the country in which you reside!

I think this is totally unfair. This is the United States of America not Mexico or any other foreign country. We speak English -- not Spanish. However, I wish that I knew Spanish. My son has been taking it for the last five years and I am glad.

When I went to Mexico, for a week, I spent three hours a day for the month before trying to be conversant in Spanish.
Did pretty good.
If I were moving there for life, I would have done better.

Not necessarily the case. Insurance companies have wised up and are now offering insurance to people with Mexican driver's licenses.

I think we're dealing with several issues here, which don't necessary tie together all the time:
1 - Immigrants' lack of English skills
2 - Illegal immigration
3 - Americans' reluctance to learn a language other than English
These are separate issues, in particular, 1 and 2 should not always be coupled together.
