Larry Carter is a GREAT guy and really nice to talk to in person. I went to a McGruders concert in the 80's when he was playing with them and after the concert...we must have talked foir about 45 minutes!

All I really came to do was buy a Mcgruders tape, but he was working the tape booth and we got to talking....again a really nice person.

This was in Dyersburg, TN. when I heard him....it was a sothern gospel concert that featured a TON of artists and the Mcgruders were last...but boy did that guy tear a guitar up! Especially when they broke out on "I'm just warming up"!

But I like the fact that he can either play rock or country styles and be great at both. I would not have sat through an entire southern gospel concert if I was not wanting to hear him play live so badly. But I did that night....and was not dissapointed.

Why Dont You Look Into Jesus by Larry Norman

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TliWDSLrYb8

As far as I know Larry Norman was the first one doing Christian rock. Keep in mind this early music had no Christian audience. It was almost fully evangelistic with the hippie movement as the hearers. He challenges them to turn from their ways to Jesus.

No I do not think its right for men to have long hair. Although the discussion of how long is long is valid. Now Larry Norman was an example of "to long".

But his music really blessed me as a young Jesus Freak. I remember going to an Aerosmith outdoor concert for witnessing purposes with another Brother. As we drove around looking for people to witness to this Bro was blasting out Larry Norman tunes. People were attracted by that and it would lead to a witness.

I dont listen to Stryper due to moral issues I have heard with them. I have heard there is a "new" Stryper without the baggage. I hope that is true.

But yes in my opinion the best Christian music I have ever heard (excepting praise and worship songs) was written by Bob Hartman of Petra.

Hair metal?

hair metal = the style that Stryper, Petra, & Whiteheart play...

similar stylistically to bands like Motley Crue, Poison, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Def Leaport, etc...

me? I like all kinds of stuff, but my fave is death/black metal and screamo and other hardcore styles... Stuff like Demon Hunter, Underoath, Chasing Victory, Haste the Day, Emery, etc... I also like stuff that is somewhat mellower than that like Skillet, Pillar, Thousand Foot Krutch, Day of Fire, and the Classic Crime...

Hmmm. So Petra and Whiteheart are "hair metal". In the time I was going to concerts I never heard that phrase. Care to explain what it means?

Of the bands you mentioned I have heard one song by Skillet and thats it. So it would be hard for me to judge how I like any of them.

However when you say you like Black Metal it is my understanding that deals with demonic themes. If thats true why would you like it?

its hair/glam rock... They're stylistically similar to those bands... Its just a classification... It gets the hair name because the bands that played it typically had long hair... (see: GnR, Poison, Motley Crue, etc., etc.)

Black metal is not really demonic...

It is an extreme heavy metal subgenre charicterized by the use of heavily-distorted guitars, high-pitched shrieking vocals, fast-paced rhythms and melodies and unconventional song-structures... OK, that's not them... lol... everything but the high-pitched fits... let me look some other stuff up...

Looks like they are being considered "Metalcore"...

Metal Core is a "fusion" genre combining elements of Extreme Metal and Hardcore punks...

list of Christian metal bands: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_metal_bands (I've heard of maybe half of these lol)

Ones to check out, though (in alphabetical order like the list):
As I Lay Dying
August Burns Red
Becoming the Archetype
Bride
Demon Hunter
Figure Four
Haste the Day
Living Sacrifice (THE Christian Metal band.. that article said Stryper was the first one, but the first major one in real metal was Living Sacrifice)
Mortification
Norma Jean
Red
The Showdown
Tourniquet
UnderOath

those are the ones I know some of... all are decent, some are better than others... if you like really really really (have I mentioned REALLY) hard music, check 'em out...

To each his own...

any interest in me posting some of the best of those bands so you can hear what they sound like??

As crazy as it sounds... The harder they get the more beautiful they get sometimes too...

like... they off-set just primal screaming and thrashing guitars with piano and almost whispered singing... its just... its amazing what some of those bands do and the emotions they portray using differences in styles and using screaming and singing and everything in between...

just wanna make sure at least someone will give 'em a listen before I find decent versions on the web...

Go ahead and post some from the ones that are harder than Petra but not the really, really, really hard stuff you mentioned. I have been meaning to find time to hear them.

The reason I basically stopped listening to Christian rock was that in the early 90's the "thrash" music began taking over. I could not bear it. I really just recently have started looking into it again.

demons have a specific vocal quality???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO_pcFaKpJw

I don't like Kutless and a lot of it is my music-snobbery...

See, thier first album is a 100% Creed ripoff stylistically (one of the songs "Tonight" is even a chord for chord theft of a Creed song)

then they release thier second album right after the Modern Worship Boom (and the "Creed ripoff backlash" to everyone else) and suddenly they are a modern worship band...

They are either really fake or God convieniently leads them to play music in the genres where they can make the most money the easiest... either way, I can't stand them for it...

John & Dino Elefante produced a heavy metal hymns album in the late 80's.... Barren Cross's lead singer did a great rendition of Nothing but the Blood of Jesus. Guardian's lead singer and John Elefante switched off vocals on He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. We did He's Got the Whole World... as a Puppet skit in our kids crusade last month. I would say that is the first (and so far only) instance of Christian psychadelic rock I've ever seen/heard...

flashing colored lights in the video... sounds stylistically similar to the music of the late 60/early 70s (Pink Floyd, Beatles, Doors, Grateful Dead etc., etc., etc. all those kind of bands)

HOWEVER, it is very good...

and who/what it is... it doesn't exist on the Internet... I can't even find anything with my mid-to-high level l33t-style hacker skillz... lol

nevermind, found it... I needed to just use my obvious, non-l33t skills and click the link to the profile of who uploaded the video... lol

none of the stuff on his site is working for me... but that could be 'cuz its 3 am and I'm going on 2 hours actual sleep and an hour car sleep and tons of crazy/fun/draining stuff in the last 48 hours... lol

live version of Seventh Day Slumber's "My Struggle" I love this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abLRjb9kFCo

Thousand Foot Krutch "Puppet"
live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JliYVPgWzFM
music video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTCZHkrb2IM&mode=related&search=

I love this song... "WAKE ME COME ON AND WAKE ME UP NOW I WANT TO CUT OFF MY STRINGS AND PRAY!!" "CUT YOUR STRINGS AND BE FREE WITH ME!!" "Everybody, shake your body, lift your hands, stop fronting YOUR JUST A PUPPET!!"

Thousand Foot Krutch "Lift It" (not sure if this is the old version of the new one... awesome worship song... ignore the Naruto video (silly Naruto fans lol))
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVDiT7SH80M

Skillet "Locked in a Cage" (old school from like 10 years ago when Skillet went full-industrial/techno rock (they're back to more metal now, but still have some industrial elements)... love this song... just... the passion and desire and just... readiness to give everything up to be God's and be with Him... awesomeness)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF1lq2Si3ZU

Emery "So Cold I Could See My Breath"
(awesome song... I am actually kind of amazed that they wrote this, because t probably turned a lot of people off... Christians because it was "graphic" (not really, but its obvious that the song is about sex (I'll post the lyrics)) and non-Christians 'cuz its pretty obvious anti-sex (which is how its about sex... but yeah...))
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB_3YVh8reU&mode=related&search=
lyrics:
Let’s start with just the basics then
I’m sure that we could fake it when
It’s time to say how much it meant
And we walk out so innocent

You can be so persuasive
When you say it’s
More than a day trip
And convince me
I’m condescending
When I ask, “Will this be ending?”
How quickly lust can pretend that it's love

We’re just the boys and girls that think they always know
With answers for the world
The ambiguity shows
We’re just the boys and girls that dance with all their clothes
(we are the boys and the girls)
Hiding under the sheets
Believing nobody knows

All the suspense
That we’ve created
Now it’s wasted
And we can’t change it
The beginning to the ending
I find myself remembering

How quickly lust can pretend it's love
Designing words to help us believe
It’s so much more than just tonight
So we have got to get this right
How quickly words can become our hands (you want it more, you want it more)
Resigning everything we believe (you want it more, you want it...)
You want it, you want it
More

We’re just the boys and girls that think they always know
(we are the boys and the girls)
With answers for the world
The ambiguity shows
We’re just the boys and girls that dance with all their clothes
(we are the boys and the girls)
Hiding under the sheets
Believing nobody knows

You could be the one to stay
Made from earth for just this day
But something tells me it’s not right
That we could lose it all tonight
I’m no better on my own
Leave the message on your phone
Always trying what I can to be a child and not a man

We’re just the boys and girls that think they always know (we are the boys and the girls)
With answers for the world
The ambiguity shows
We’re just the boys and girls that dance with all their clothes (we are the boys and the girls)
Hiding under the sheets
Believing nobody knows

My hands across your clothes (my hands across your clothes)
And me with all the plans
(Something I’ll be)
To keep us boys and girls (to keep us boys and girls)
Another woman and man
(So that I won't always lose)

finally:

Jonah33 "Faith Like That"
(this is seriously probably the most powerful song I have ever heard in my life... I saw them in concert in '06 and they played this song for 20 minutes and it was just... incredible...)
