So who's using it?
I upgraded the day it came out. (i had bought a Vista capable PC a couple of weeks prior)
I generally don't go for pretty when it comes to the desktop but I like it. I had run the beta on my laptop but had driver issues with sound.
Driver issues are the biggest issue. Don't upgrade unless you verify hardware compatibility, there is almost no driver support for hardware more than 6 months old. Some things like sound cards may work by accident, but don't count on it.
It asks for a GB of RAM, when it really wants 2 GB, with 2 it rocks, and so do applications such as photoshop and illustrator.

I'm in the market for a new notebook to do video editing on, and I'm sure by the time I have the ability to get one, Vista will be 'standard' on most everything.
I don't think I'm going to be interested in all the fancy graphic tricks that its capable of though.
Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm going to go PC or Mac this time.

I haven't "bit" yet. I had the Beta for months but was afraid to install it due to driver issues. I didn't want to lose the ability to sync my Treo with Outlook, which is what happened when I went to the XP Beta. I have a Dell w/ 2gb ram, 256mb video and a 1.6 Core Duo processor, so I'm pretty confident that I won't have any problems with Vista.
I have just been waiting to hear the reports from other users first. I can usually get around whatever MS throws at my laptop eventually, but I just hate the hours it normally takes to fix it. I am getting Office 2007 Pro for free just for attending a Vista kick-off even in Detroit nest week, so if I get a coupon for Vista, I just may jump.
Thanks for the info!!!!!

Rofl, I am doing the kick off in Hartford on the 22nd for the free office 2007. Developer track. I used the office 2007 beta as well. Major usability enhancements.
I guess FrontPage is dead, they have a new thing.

Have you messed with Sharepoint at all? I believe that has taken on many of the functions of Frontpage.

Ha! Amazing! I'm taking the Technology Decision Maker track. I have been to a few MS events before and got free stuff. I figure if I keep going and keep getting free stuff I'll keep getting invitations.
I think their new Web software is "Expressions." I use Flash Studio 8 & DreamWeaver for our church web site. I used to use FrontPage.

Remindes me of XP...they said you needed 256 but everyone know 512 was minimum and a full GB was better....so now if I upgrade Im gonna need to upgrade my ram too?

Yes...it's actually a great web designer and some say it might give dreamweaver a run for it's money. It's full CSS based. I like it. I have the beta

Yes, expressions. Seems like they have an expression for different aspects of design. I have been using dreamweaver since 3.0, not likely to change, however, the beta is free so I may try it for giggles.

Well, I don't have a single clue about how to use html or any programming language for that matter. But I could use Frontpage. When I wanted to get more creative I got some quotes for a Flash web site. After getting quotes of multiple thousands of dollars, I figured I could figure it out. So, I got Macromedia Flash 2004 and a couple of books and built the current site our church now has. Time I had, money we didn't. That was over a year ago. I can update it, but don't ask me to build one or how I built the one we have. I can't remember, but it's there anyway! :D I still have the books!!!
Since VISTA is supposedly a Mac-like operating system, why not just get a real Mac?

Hey you did a pretty good job for a guy with a book, most folks can't apply the books that well. I can't. I wish I had 10% back on every computer book I ever bought and never used past .. "Oh ok, I'll just figure it out" and toosed the book on the shelf or in a box.
I stopped myself on the "Submit Order" button Friday from ordering SitePoints Ruby on Rails book. My more sensible self said "John, you are going to throw $34.00 into the next box bound for the basement, Why?" So I clicked cancel.
Here is the punchline to the whole Joke.
I support my family, as a technical writer. A guy who writes the kinda books that I don't even read.

Since VISTA is supposedly a Mac-like operating system, why not just get a real Mac?Vista is a windows type operating system with a mac-ish interface, which brings us full circle back to 1992.
I actually would switch to mac. Just can't afford it. It is priced out of the range of all but the elitists.
If apple really wanted to get people like me over to their platform, they would price macs, powerful ones, at the equivalent PC pricing, they would get with adobe and etc and deal free crossover licenses for stuff like creative suite and the macromedia stuff... but they don't.
For me to switch means buying a system at 5 or 6 times the price as a cor-duo pc, and buying licenses for all the softwere.
Nope. BTW, Vista is rocking olong just fine on my core-duo.

That's pretty good, JA! You can write 'em but don't read 'em and I can read 'em but wouldn't even let the thought cross my mind about writing one! We are all truly different tools in God's tool box. That never ceases to amaze me!!
BTW, went to the Vista Launch event today, in Detroit! Had to drive through a blizzard in both directions for 2hrs! Did get Office 2007 Pro, though. Actually, it was just a license. You still have to download the prog and the site has been down today. Also, got Vista Ultimate for eval. Almost installed it, but again, exercised great restraint! :D

I second that.
I'm looking at new notebooks. Still up in the air if I'll even get one, but... the Macbook Pro is literally $1000 more than the comparably equipped PC Notebooks I'm looking at. Same proc. Same memory. LESS HDD space... same LCD.... etc. And then i'd have to pay twice as much for nearly every software title I'm looking to get.
Kaint uh-ford it.
They're elitist snobs.

Well the site finally came back up. However, I tried for 6 hrs to get it installed. The problem is that because I was such a nice guy for being a beta tester for Office 2007, the release version wouldn't install over it. I found instructions on deleting it and even had to go into the registry numerous times. All to no avail. After spending 2 hrs on the phone today with tech support and after giving the guy in India remote control of my computer, he finally got the beta and the registry keys removed. He apologized over and over and said that all the folks who previously installed the beta had the same problem.
Good luck and maybe it will easier for you than it was for me.

Should be because t will be a fresh install, I gave my daughter the PC I was running the beta on when I bought this new one.
Say, I discovered a cool feature with Vista = ReadyBoost. It allows you to use a USB Flash Drive as system memory. Works pretty good, I added 850 MB with no problem at all, just plug it in. Noticable speed increase.

There are things that microsoft does well, and things they don't. I use CentOS on three web servers and Fedora on another. Linux is the only way to go for servers. For the desktop, for what I do, there simply isn't a mature enough application suite that can compete with Adobe creative suite and Dreamweaver.
Like I said before, I am a graphics professional, I feed my family quite well using photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver and indesign. Gimp doesn't hold a candle to photoshop, there is no illustrator, indesign or dreamweaver equivalent for linux. As nice as open source is, it takes money to develop robust consumer applications, and linux as a desktop os isn't there yet, and it my never be.
But for a server, it is tops. Windows 2k3 server?:ranting :heeheehee

I don't believe I'll be using that aero interface thingy. I have better things to waste RAM on. :D
I went with a Dell Insprion E1705. Between the security package discount (4 year warranty with complete care - accidental damage coverage - and 4 years of lojack), the web site offer ($343 off), and my employee discount, I saved a considerable chunk of change.
Normally, the employee discount doesn't save me a whole lot, but it all added up.
Definitely made a very attractive price... and thanks to my tax refund, I was able to afford it.
