The only Banjo Music I ever liked was played by a kid that looked like a cross between an opossum and a human in the movie Deliverance

I grew up in a bluegrass family. My dad and brother played just about any instrument they laid their hands on quite well. I would sing with my sister and my dad at our church in the Ozarks.

We also would have music at family gatherings. Upright bass, fiddle, banjo, about ten acoustic (flat-top) guitars, mandolin (me) and juice harp.

We were regular little redneck hillbillies. BTW, I know some of you won't believe I'm such a hick - but it's true!

I'm soooooo proud.

I also love the new group NickelCreek. A group of young people who are simply unbelievable on traditionally bluegrass instruments. They are in the mold of Allison Krauss and Union Station.

Scott, I enjoy Bluegrass music myself. When I was a teenager I loved to tune into WWVA and listen to Flatt & Scrubbs, and other Bluegrass artists. In Chipman we were blessed to have The Phillips Family, an outstanding and popular Bluegrass group in NB. Matter of fact, Erdie Phillips, the father is a member of the NB Country Hall of Fame. He and his brother Ray are credited with pioneering Bluegrass music in NB many years ago.

We had a Bluegrass Festival in Chipman the last few summers I was there and I was the local pastor chosen to organize and preach at the Sunday morning worship service at the campground bandstand. I always enjoyed this.

I have fond memories of special Christian Bluegrass nights we had at our church. It was usually packed out. I rather enjoyed singing Bluegrass with some of the guys. I usually sang tenor and played the guitar.

One of the couples in the church hosted a New Year's party each year and that was a regular bluegrass jam session that we always looked forward to. Talking about all this makes me a bit homesick for those great times of fellowship.

I think banjo music IN SMALL SPURTS is alot of fun. I wouldn't want a steady diet of it. But when someone plays really well, you have to admire their talents and abilities.

He is is 82 and is woking on about his 85th banjo that he makes from scratch.

They are beuatiful works with unique sound.

He is also a blue grass fan.

I'm not a big bluegrass fan at all. I appreciate the pickin' and grinnin' :D and the vocal harmonies on which a lot of emphasis is placed.

We had a family in the church we pastored back home who were quite well known in the blue grass genre of music. They played at the Old Opry in Nashville years back and made a number of recordings. In fact the town that we lived in ... I think most everyone there played a guitar. LOL.

Country and blue grass was huge in that town so I gained an appreciation for the music but it's not what I choose to listen to. :)

I appreciate many different kinds/styles of music.

Little Roy is quite good.Alot of the Lewis Family albums from the 70's and such had piano and drums which alienated them from the hard-core bluegrass purists.
I'm not quite the traditionalist my Dad is.I play a Electric bass which my Dad tolerates but he prefers the Upright bass.

Bluegrass music has evolved over the past 10-15 years. Allison Krauss, Nickle Creek, Bele Fleck, Mark O'Connor, have stretched the boundaries of bluegrass music for the better. Hayseed Dixie has covered bands like Iron Maiden and AC/DC with twang and bluegrass. David Lee Roth did an album of Van Halen tunes with a bluegrass band. Ricky Skaggs is doing a great job as well. I saw him on CMT Country Crossroads w/ Bruce Hornsby. Great concert. (You haven't heard SuperFreak until you heard the Hornsby/Skaggs version.)

I like the direction bluegrass is heading. It's the new jazz of the millenium..tv

One day a preacher anounced that Wed. Night he would play and sing Kentucky Home. He thought it might help his Wed. Night attendence... sure enough he had a few new faces in the crowd. True to his word, he got up and begin to sing, Kentucky Home... one man that visting for the first time just cried and cried... after the service the pastor spoke to him... he said, I couldn't help but notice, that your were touched by my song tonight. Are you from Kentucky he asked? No, the man replied, I'm a musician...

Bean Blossom is south of Indianapolis and a little east of I65 in Brown County, Indiana. Brown County also has the Little Nashville Opry and several artists. It's tourist appeal is like Gatlinburg without the mountains. It's also near Cheese Head's church, if you remember him from a previous forum. It's about 100 miles west of here. We used to go there every couple of years to the Little Nashville Opry and to visit all the shops. We haven't been there for several years now. Bean Blossom is not far outside the town of Nashville, Ind. One year we were in Nashville, IN and there was a parade and Bill Monroe was the grand marshall. We've never been to the Bean Blossom Blugrass place but I think it is pretty primitve.

By the way, I like Blue Grass. Just last week I ordered 4 CD's from Lawrence Bishop who is pastor of a nearby church and also has a bluegrass band. The CD's haven't come yet. I've never heard Lawrence Bishop or his wife Darlene Bishop preach nor have I been to their church. The web site for Lawrence Bishop is:
