View Full Version : CONSISTENCY!! And the Affirmation Statement
Ok..Its like this...Im JUST ABOUT weary of some of you guys praising the Affirmation Statement.
Lets look at it like this...shall we....
The affirmation statement in itself says that "I (Ministers Name) do hereby declare that I believe and embrace fundamental doctrine as stated in the Articles of Faith as set forth by the United Pentecostal Church Int. I ALSO BELIEVE AND EMBRACE THE HOLINESS STANDARDS of the United Pentecostal Church Int. in said Articles of Faith,
And I PLEDGE to practice, teach and preach the same"
Ok...now here is the Fundamental Doctrine as written in the manual.
"FUNDAMENTAL DOCTRINE
The basic and fundamental doctrine of this organization shall be the Bible standard of full salvation, which is repentance, baptism in water by immersion in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the initial sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.
We shall endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit until we all come into the unity of the faith, at the same time admonishing all brethren that they shall not contend for their different views to the disunity of the body."
Ok...Now here in the Holiness part as written in the manual.
"HOLINESS
Godly living should characterize the life of every child of the Lord, and we should live according to the pattern and example given in the Word of God. "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and Godly, in this present world" (Titus 2:11,12). "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps: who did no sin, neither was 'guile found in His mouth: who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed himself to Him that judgeth righteously" (1 Peter 2:21-23).
"Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (Heb. 12:14).
"But as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, be ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Peter 1:15-19).
We wholeheartedly disapprove of our people indulging in any activities which are not conducive to good Christianity and Godly living, such as theaters, dances, mixed bathing, women cutting their hair, make-up, any apparel that immodestly exposes the body, all worldly sports and amusements, and unwholesome radio programs and music. Furthermore, because of the display of all these evils on television, we disapprove of any of our people having television sets in their homes. We admonish all of our people to refrain from any of these practices in the interest of spiritual progress and the soon coming of the Lord for His church."
For the sake of discussion....I AGREE that the Fundamental Doctrine in what he DO AGREE ON.
BUT
And this is where I am so frustrated.
Lets take a section of the Holiness part...
Break it down....
FIRST AND FOREMOST..."We wholeheartedly disapprove" is NOT a WE FORBID..it is a postion with understanding that men have different views on some issues.
NOW here we go...
Some of you guys have BLASTED good men for wanting to do away with the AS....and some of you have even said they are "LIARS" if they sign it and not abide by it!
So as a young minister...let me show you what I am sick of.
1.such as theaters - I have good friends that sign the AS that DO attend theaters!
2.dances - I have friends that I have PERSONALLY witnessed dance in a restaurant that DO sign the AS.
3.mixed bathing - I have friends that DO attend things and take part in things that ARE mixed bathing. - Notice it does not say ATTIRE for mixed bathing..it says MIXED BATHING....that would include rafting trips, canoing, swimming, the lake the beach etc....YET..they DO sign the AS.
4.women cutting their hair, make-up - I have friends that their wives DO trim their hair and DO wear modest makeup and DO cover up zits! YET - they sign the AS.
5.unwholesome radio programs and music. - I have MANY friends that listen mainy to Country music..which is mostly about drinking and cheating ect.....YET - They sign the AS.
6.all worldly sports and amusements - I know of very few that DO NOT attend Six Flags or Disney or ball games and yet they DO sign the AS.
I SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST!
7.Furthermore, because of the display of all these evils on television, we disapprove of any of our people having television sets in their homes. - I have MANY..MANY friends that have tv sets in their homes....and they do not preach against tv. ...AND those that don't have dvd's of tv shows. YET they DO sign the AS.
Now here is the kicker....WE GET BLASTED by those saying "If you have a tv and sign the AS...YOU ARE A LIAR!!!"
WELL....Guess what IF you VIOLATE just one of the above 7 points...YOU ARE JUST AS BIG A LIAR!
Sorry...but it is fact...
Remember....the AS...says
I ALSO BELIEVE AND EMBRACE THE HOLINESS STANDARDS of the United Pentecostal Church Int. in said Articles of Faith,
And I PLEDGE to practice, teach and preach the same"
I see no pick and and choose room there..........................
IF you sign it and violate just 1 of the standards set...you are lying.
So there you go...
OH CONSISTENCY WHERE ARE THOU!
THATS why I respect the Greg Riggens of the world and the Coonskinners of the world and the old paths of the world and especially the Epely of the world.
DO I agree with them....NO...not on everything....
BUT THEY ARE CONSISTENT!!!
I for one am weary of getting blasted by those that deserve the same blast!
NOW...do I agree with someone doing alot of those things...NO WAY!!!
BUT...IF you sign it.....and not abide by it...you are lying!
Period and checkmate!
So we need to be very very cautious before we dog or condemn a brother....we must first look at what we are doing....only then will you have the green light.

I can't count how many spiritual giants I know that signed their personal addendum to the AS and sent it in renouncing the tv stance which they had never taken and some of the other "personal conviction" statutes stated. No one took their licenses away or stopped preaching at their churches! The founding pastor of our church helped start the PAW and UPC. He was quoted as telling his congregation that he would personally buy anyone a tv if they would get rid of their telephone! This was a very prominent ds at one time. Unity is not conformity. The early pioneers got that. What happened along the way is anyone's guess.

Isn't it funny that something so "damning" as a woman wearing pants isn't mentioned? I've always wondered about that.

NYLP - You are Great and I like you and I agree with you but then again - I have compromised everything and gone totally down the tubes by being on TBN.
Did you know that they make you sign your name in BLOOD that you will NOT say a word about ONE GOD and water baptism or holiness and that you have to say TRINITY at least THREE times if you want to be on there????????????
You know - I thought about it - but then three big ole BODY GUARDS (I mean armorbearers) were staring at me and one put his hand on his hip like - uh he might have been PACKIN" so - Lord help me - I SIGNED IT - but ---- I did not really mean it - I mean - It was an affirmation statement that said - I renounce ONE GOD and promise I will preach THREE GODS and that women HAVE TO WEAR make up, jewelry, cut hair and BRITCHES and that men HAVE to have FACIAL HAIR and a ring or two and talk about PROSPERITY and sowing seed into the THREE GOD MESSAGE!

I ALSO BELIEVE AND EMBRACE THE HOLINESS STANDARDS of the United Pentecostal Church Int. in said Articles of Faith,
And I PLEDGE to practice, teach and preach the same"
Interesting. It's been awhile since I've given any thought to the affirmation statement, but this post definitely raises some thought provoking issues.
The compliance demanded is total: to sign one must not only pledge to practice the holiness standards, but must, on the strength of their signature, pledge that they believe the holiness standards; further they must pledge to both teach and preach the same.
In the interest of unity for the cause of evangelism, a preacher might agree to practice the holiness standards, but practice is not enough, belief is demanded.
Lets take a section of the Holiness part...
Break it down....
FIRST AND FOREMOST..."We wholeheartedly disapprove" is NOT a WE FORBID..it is a postion with understanding that men have different views on some issues.
This has the appearance of being a nonsensical statement. No signatory to the affirmation statement can disassociate himself from the corporate "we" in this article, and, in the context of a pastor and congregation relationship, how can a minister wholeheartedly disapprove of something and not forbid what he wholeheartedly disapproves of?
Remember....the AS...says
I ALSO BELIEVE AND EMBRACE THE HOLINESS STANDARDS of the United Pentecostal Church Int. in said Articles of Faith,
And I PLEDGE to practice, teach and preach the same"
I see no pick and and choose room there..........................
IF you sign it and violate just 1 of the standards set...you are lying.

This statement is made repeatedly on this forum, and I have yet to see it refuted. There are few ministers that wholeheartedly agree with every issue expressed in the holiness article so there must be a good refutation to this statement, but I've yet to hear it.

I am VERY surprised that some on here, that I highly respect, have not even commented on this thread.
Proves a point....doesnt it.
NOW you see why I think the AS is pointless....VERY VERY VERY few actually do it the way it mandates.

I'm not certain I want to be one of YOUR friends...it seems you do an excellent self-serving job of analyzing others for YOUR own benefit and purposes...maybe you might want to give some thought to praying for, loving and nurturing Jesus Christ in YOUR life and theirs.
Otherwise, all this "much ado about nothing" and simplistic thinking is for no avail...any Heavy Hitter could expose YOUR shallow thinking in about 5 scriptural references ("I can name that tune in 4 notes!!")

I am really sorry you feel that way.....you missed my whole point, I guess.
My point was not to be "self serving" at all.....it was to show that IF one is going to get called a liar over one thing the AS adresses...then how can other things be less dishonest?
My life is an open book....the difference between me and others is....I do what I do and dont hide it....I truly believe God respects that more then a hidden second lifestyle.
Again sorry if your misunderstood the post....

:banghead
PLUS....that was NOT an analyzing of just others...I enjoy many of those things myself.....the difference is I did not mention their names but will mention my own.

Why is it that all you guys believe everyone is offended by what you say!! It's really unbelievable...this is a forum site...people say what we want, believe, want others to believe, what they believe others want them to say, etc., etc...I promise you, I'm not offended by your post...just perplexed at its simplistic approach...
Oh, thanks for the PM...very sweet and juvenile...was it from a family album??

OOOK....your spirit is screaming loudly....
Simplistic approach is what Christianity is all about......"Except they be as little children".
It requires a simple answer......Still dont see where the scriptures are you promised...
Your right...my pm was sweet.....its called trying to be respectful.
Sorry if you are not used to that.

INTERPRETATION.....I CANT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.
I got my answers to the questions posed in my thread about the AS and the signing of it and how and where it binds.
I was on the telephone with a dear man that I and many others respect highly. You could consider him a District Official of sorts from Texas.
So here you go....from a man that knows, reads, studies and defines the manual as written.
First the AS
The affirmation statement in itself says that "I (Ministers Name) do hereby declare that I believe and embrace fundamental doctrine as stated in the Articles of Faith as set forth by the United Pentecostal Church Int. I ALSO BELIEVE AND EMBRACE THE HOLINESS STANDARDS of the United Pentecostal Church Int. in said Articles of Faith,
And I PLEDGE to practice, teach and preach the same"
The fundamental Doctrine part.....No question....
Its the second half that I am questioning...
I ALSO BELIEVE AND EMBRACE THE HOLINESS STANDARDS of the United Pentecostal Church Int. in said Articles of Faith,
And I PLEDGE to practice, teach and preach the same"
So here they are again.....Quoted from the manual...
His words to me were quite shocking to say the least...
Here is the kicker in the wording...
We wholeheartedly disapprove!
He said that is NOT a we forbid.......It was put there because of the need for tolerance for different interpretation. He stated that the office of the GS - Bro. Jerry Jones would indeed verify this.
ALSO.....notice please that womens pants are NOT addressed in the manual!!!
hmmmmm This, I admit was a huge red flag for me.
I was told "TECHNICALLY" If a minsters wife wore pants or a tv program is started and the praise team women are in pants....the District can do NOTHING about it...since it is NOT adressed in the manual.
They put this HUGE emphasis on TV!
YET in matters of what we call HOLINESS - We get a wholeheartedly Disapprove.
So now you have it...
Which WITH THE ACEPTION OF THE ACTS 2:38 Fundamental Doctrine....
EVERYTHING ELSE IS UP TO PRIVATE INTERPRETATION!
Read it again...
These are NOT shall nots....
So...I guess the AS IS ok in my opinion now since I do agree we have to be united on acts 2.
So those of you that would leave for not signing the AS over standards....COME ON HOME!!!!!!!!
