Is there anybody here who uses Flatwound strings on a musical instrument ?
I use Flatwound strings on my electric basses,I prefer them for their deeper tones.
What are the virtues of Round Wound and Flatwound Strings and which do you prefer ?

Please explain the differences, pros and cons, to this rookie bass player.

I play a five string and I love the deep tones. ;)

Flatwounds almost have a upright bass sound very deep not very bright as in round wounds,Flatwound are good for country or blues sounds, but not for bright popping type sounds.
Flatwounds are also easier on the fingers.

LadyRev here I think this will help you and they are rare but Flatwounds are made for 5-Strings.

I have played guitar for 10 years and I have no idea!!!

I just buy 9s for the electric and 12s for accoustic.

I like round wound strings MUCH better than flat wound!!

The reason is because flatwound strings take out most of the harmonics and overtones. The result is a bass that has no depth of tone!

If you don't like the higher pitched harmonics, you can EQ them out. A bass "slap" sounds MUCH better on round wound strings!

You are exactly right. I play several instruments and you can EQ out what you don't want but if you don't have quality going into the EQ you generally can't add it correctly after the fact.

From all your past posts I see you are a "guitar man". I don't play myself but it does run in the family as I have a cousin who is known for his guitar skills. He lives in Nashville and is named Larry Carlton of the "Hillstreet Blues" fame for which he won a Grammy award. I haven't seen him in years for we sort of move in different circles.

Well being a guitarist...I have not heard flat wounds in the bands I have played with on a bass. Most bass players I know used round wound strings.
