I was recently inspired by a visit to a UPCi church to start a thread concerning the decible levels in churches today.

I'm wondering what the various view points are with regards to the dB levels that are achieved in the sanctuaries of today's churches thanks to the advent of the precious sound system.

If we are against smoking, for example, because it is harmful to the temple, then how much moreso should we guard the precious gift of hearing? Especially with our children.

How do you or how have you addressed a harmful dB level situation in a church?

I was the sound guy. Instructed by the p/w leader to crank it up. If anyone complained about pain (which they did), I was to "pay them no mind". I quit, soon after that.

We have several who have a problem with their ears if the music is too loud.
We always try to be sensitive to them,

Volume does not equal anointing.

We can still play "skillfully with a loud noise", recognizing that "loud" is subjective.

Thanks for sharing that. It's really unbelievable and I really feel that it needs to be addressed. I wonder to what extent people, that would have otherwise been saved, walk out for that very reason, while Pentecostals try and spiritualize it and say that it was the devil or something like conviction for example?

Right, I realize that some have come to this common sense solution.

I'm all for biblical "loud."

That was well before amplification beyond what would be necessary was instituted.

Never been a consistant problem in our church.

I mean, off and on the PA has an attitude and after every Drama, confrence or other event it has toi be readjusted, but thats the nature of PA's

I have the damaged hearing of a real Rock n' Roll refugee. Yet, I don't listen to much music of any kind at all. It all comes from the church experience.

I used to turn it down whenever I saw someone visibly jump in pain during the preaching. That would of course result in the preacher demanding more volume. So, I'd pump up his monitors. But they could tell you were just turning up the monitors and demand that the house be turned back up as well.

All of this was justified with some sort of challenge like, "We want to be sure the devil hears us..." Or, "God is not some old man frightened by loud noises... TURN IT UP!!!" This would get the predictable few to "shout" in response which was evidence that those in pain were "not of God."

Just notice, the same ones sitting out in the hall at the back of the church are the same ones who complain about how loud it is. Who you going to listen to? Someone who is always in the House of God? Or someone who hangs around in the hallway in the back of the church?

See... "those people" just aren't Spiritual!

The old german baptist brethren sing without music exclusively. It's nice, though their style is weird, monotone and severly drawn out. I don't really care for it, but normal singing without music would be refreshing in contrast to music turned up too loud.

I have visited a church of Christ a few times and their music is so beautiful, They are acapella and honestly being so used to the loud music of an Apostolic church, I did not think I would like it. But just everyone singing without music is really a nice sound

I quite agree. The OGBB don't believe in music, no matter how much scripture you show them. I love it, but it's not necessary and a break once in a while is great change of pace.

I do appreciate the OGBB's elders ability to preach without the use of a sound system. They get along just fine as far as being heard in a large room. The meeting houses that I've been in are much larger than most UPCi sanctuaries that I've seen and they are usually very full.

I think more people would come and listen to the Truth if UPCi ministers would get over themselves in this regard. I believe that Paul would straighten them out if he were here. Too bad they don't listen to the Lord, of course, how can they....they've lost their hearing.

The more they lose it, the more they need to turn it up.

We apostolicas think that loud equals spiritual. We think that loud makes people respond to God.

Just another one our many false assumptions.

I spent many years in church that was always so loud. some of the musians wore ear plugs on the platform.

The people that went out and contacted visitors asked them what they liked or didn't like about the church.

Many times people told them it was SO LOUD.

But yet they would not turn it down.

I took a blind man to a camp meeting and after 10 minutes he got up and went outside where he stayed for the rest of the night. They put a chairs out there for him and his wife to sit in. I went out to find out what was wrong and he told me he was already blind and didn't need to go deaf too. He wanted to protect his ears which he felt he had already lost 10% of his hearing in after being in there as long as he had been. This was an eye opener for me. Having grown up in this type of atmosphere, it was normal for me.

Oh brother, I agree whole heartedly!!! The church I left, had LOUD music/preaching from the beginning. When we moved here, I had a 4 month old, and though I saw no need for someone besides me to care for him, I put him in the nursery because I was afraid of the sound system damaging his hearing. A year or so later, the sound system "blew" and they got a new one, that was even louder. A couple years ago, *that* one blew and they got ANOTHER one even LOUDER! I developed very severe tinnitus, and began wearing ear plugs to church, and had my whole family wear them. Others had started wearing them too. A lot of people complained about the loud volume, but no one did anything, because the pastor was going deaf, and if he couldn't hear himself while he preached, he had it cranked even more. I had to start sitting towards the back of the church (ooo I was backslid! :tease) just to get as far away from the speakers as possible.

And let's not forget how we needed to crank it up *extra* loud when a visiting minister/evangelist/choir/etc came, to "get the congregation going" and make it look good!

As far as it running off visitors....yes. I know one family whose daughter had started coming to church with us, and the parents were so thrilled with the "improvement" in their daughter that the rest of the family decided to come. One service. The mother sat there plugging her ears the whole time, nearly in tears from pain, and ended up leaving early because she couldn't take it. Her daughter never came again. This was a family that I know desperately needed God and were HUNGRY!

BTW, I love the photo of you and mamabear :nutso

We attended a church where it was necessary to wear earplugs. It is frustrating that so many churches think loud=anointed.

The church we attend now has the volume at a reasonable level and I think if it were a problem, they would actually listen to someone and turn it down.

Anything else falls way short of taking care of the Flock....and Pastors wonder why the church doesn't listen to them.

We have this little simple souled fella who has his little tray and cash box selling mints before every service to benefit the "sound ministry". He sold out early and often when he had the bright idea to sell foam earplugs.

The pastor got pretty TO'd and told him to stop.

People just use tissue paper now instead, or they just bring their own.

Funny, the PW can sing and yell and shout as loud as she wants jamming her thumb in the air to the fellas in the back, and the big guy doesn't do anything, but when the preacher gets up there, he is very concerned and tells the sound guys to turn it down.

I am in favor of turning it off completely when a woman takes hold of a microphone. :D

So I'm a foolish nitpicker for being concerned with the unnatural and unnecessary amplification of voice and music to the levels of damage to the Temples of the Holy Ghost? Their children? Not to mention the impact it has had and will have on visitors.

What Bravado!

If Paul upbraided those that spoke in tongues too much for the negative implications it would have on those that would come in, how much more so should we turn it down to a reasonable level and let the only power that matters have His Way instead of trying to manufacture an atmosphere artificially? Is this not a valid eternal concern?

I suppose you are of the old school that believes that there ought not be any critique of obvious error. Just sit down, shut up, and go deaf?

Who is the more foolish here? The one with genuine concern for a subject that often falls on deaf ears, or the one that thinks all is well because he’s quite possibly oblivious for his own hearing loss?

I’m sure it’s probably not loud enough for those already half deaf!

How do you suppose the blind were able to lead the blind? Same way the deaf lead the deaf?

Are there no concessions for those that haven’t, nor want, to lose their hearing?

BTW, Was Jim a fool and a nitpick for his many critiques of the status quo?

Where do you think this forum came from originally? And do you advise staring at the sun?

Well, I guess I will just align myself with the "nitpickers" then, since I don't think it is hunky dory that both myself and my son (who isn't even 10) both have hearing damage due to exposure to VOLUME....or the fact that said volume has run people out of the church...people whose ETERNAL SOULS were hungry and they left with nothing but a headache.

Db levels are a big problem in a lot of churches and especially at campmeetings... I can't even understand what's being said because the speakers are distorting so bad. When the noise dies down, the shouting stops... I'm not sure it's all spirit...
Being a musician as well as the a/v department head, I concur that many of our churches equate loud with a move of the spirit. Let me throw another angle at this problem. Many of the churches that I've visited seem to put the audio system at the bottom of the list when it comes to the budget. Inadequate equipment trying to compensate will have a negative effect on the worship service. Folks on the front row have bleeding ears while the people in the back didn't hear a word the minister said. Can't blame the volunteer sound guy for this problem. You wouldn't have "Bro. Bob" who works at radio shack, hook up the electricity for the church. This is far too common in apostolic churches. A/v should not be a distraction to the service, but enhance it. A properly installed system fully covers the audience without deafening some while leaving others to guess what the pastor just said. My 2 cents.

There was this couple that used to come to our church. life was good. they were workers. did lots of stuff for the church. never complained about the sound.

then after a while they started making demands of the pastor. what he should preach and stuff. they didnt like the fact that their demands were left with no reply nor any complience. all the sudden they started showing up with cotton in their ears and sour looks on their faces.

often the issue isnt the issue. and the sound more often than not, is not the issue.

There once was an old guy who went to my church.

I ran the sound about a third of the time and every time i ran the sound he would come and tell me it was too loud. Same thing happened to the other sound guys. he would stand there and not move until you turned it down.

well, about the third time he pulled this on me, I grabed a slide on a dead channel and pulled it down and asked him how that was? he listened a bit, smiled and said perfect!

I told the other guys. they did the same. He did this right up till he decided he hated the pastor and left in a split.

my experience is the sound is the proxey for a bad attitude.

I agree that some people complain about everything and for those people the volume of the service is something that they add to their list.

HOWEVER, there are churches that have their sound systems at decibel levels that do damage to hearing. This is NOT appropriate and people shouldn't be labeled as nitpickers and complainers because they want to continue to be able to hear.

I've been a soundman for a number of years. The first day I took over I was taken into a corner by the keyboard player and his wife. I was told that my position was critical to the moving of the spirit. That if I didn't have it loud the spirit would not move..........WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING!!! That was the question I was thinking. Instead I asked them did I then have the power to "make" a service? Oh yes they said. I left that meeting and proceeded to do everything in my power to destroy that mindset. Within a month the audience was telling me how nice it sounded, how their ears didn't hurt, how they didn't have headaches anymore when they left church. I took that and basically told everyone short of the pastor that I was cuttingthe strings the platform had on the the soundman. If they had a problem with it they could take it up with the congregation. The preacher was still a problem though. I simply informed him that from now I would be refering all complaints about how loud he was to him. It didn't take much of that till he left me alone about his mix. Not many could get away with such a hardline stand. Lucky for me I was the only one who knew what he was doing so they were pretty well stuck with me. :ursofunny

We used to have an organist and when she played, she seemed to have to override everything to the point things rattled when she played

The quieter side SHHHHHhhhhhh

Most of the time less is more. Our illustrious music dudes don't understand that sound doesn't get clearer with more volume, especially in a smaller building. Clarity is achieved with less volume....
