I know churches during Katrina & Rita that opened their gyms up to feed in different locales. One housed the Red Cross.

Well, thank God for that...it's not that the people aren't generous and good, just seems that the focus for the most part is very much on serving their own.

Many congregations are small thus somewhat limited in what they can afford to do besides helping their own but I have heard many stories that were inspirational during the Katrina and Rita horrors. Not only did Apostolics hlep others but many others helped Apostolics. During those times everyone is an American the most generous nation on the earth.

I can't remember our churches actually reaching out to provide for the physical needs of the less fortunate in the community.

We did provide much love and support for those who regularly attended church. If there was a death in the family, the ladies were on the ball bringing covered dishes and the men helping in any way they could. The congregation surrounds their own with care and concern. That is wonderful and good, but what about those outside the doors of the church?

Just a thought...

I think this is a very good thought.

There is no doubt that Apostolics can be the most hospitable people on earth.

Our church does. In fact it is becoming a focus.

Our church has made a concerted effort in the last couple of years to reach outside of our doors with charity and giving.

We have multiple ongoing programs to help a needy neighborhood that is close to us, (we help with minor home repairs, touch up painting, yard work, moving people, etc.) and we have assisted the Red Cross in feeding displaced familys during CA wildfires, also our youth group does coat and blanket drives yearly.

The youth do a door to door back to school drive, providing school supplies. They just gave away over 50 turkeys for Thanksgiving to needy familys, and always when we are doing the door to door stuff, they ask if the people have any needs that they can pray with them about, but never is anything asked in return, as far as "come to my church" type of thing.

I think that these types of things are our duty as the church, Jesus made it pretty clear how he felt about feeding and clothing "the least of these".

SORRY-:hijacked

Is your church a derivative of Mennonite or is it UPC? Or other?

If, so why the concern? As adults can they not find their own salvation with fear and trembling? :noidea

P.S. The P.S. was so redundant.

A parent is a parent and a father a father, whether children are grown and on their own or not. I will never stop living my best witness for my children... and my children's children...even when they are on their own and making their own decisions. I'm glad this man isn't either.

(Just my two cents... don't know this man from a hole in the ground... thought the letter was fine)

seguidordejesus 11-25-2007 11:10 PM

For the record, I just thought the P.S. was redundant. Perhaps I should have kept my mouth shut, as I thought the rest of the letter was fine and to the point. I apologize to any who have been offended.

With all of the hemhawin for the last 20 years if he doesn't after this he has lost credibility...probably just waiting for a few others to jump in the pool...er...water

I know of one of our churches that opened up for Katrina and the ungrateful folks did all kinds of damage to the church. The Red Cross told them "they" (the RC) could not do anything about it. The church had to obsorb the cost to fix their church back up.

We can only hope the increase for 2009 Ministers Dues will not include the loss of all the subscriptions to the Herald too!

(the last increase of $48 per year was to subsidize the printing of magazines never read)

Do your dues go toward a ministerial retirement fund so elderly ministers and their widows can be cared for in their waning years?

Dora 11-26-2007 02:29 PM

Paw Paw was district sup. of Tx for 20 yrs...no retirement no pension no fund of any kind for him. Good thing he was wise with his money...

Not at all. They purchase life insurance and pay subscriptions of periodicals.

I have absolutely no idea what this means.

I guess I am really asking, are TJ/you/the church there leaving the UPC?

I know it may seem redundant and even rhetorical, but I haven't read anything on here or heard outside what you folks have decided...

rkentsmith 11-26-2007 04:46 PM

VM makes his exit in a classy way....

Had he not written....

The rumor mill would have gone wild....

So he quietly walks with an explanation that does not bash etc....

I would think many here would celebrate this letter....

His exit adds to the division within and round the UPCI....

Brothers and sisters ....

Rejoice...

Another ultra con bit the dust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exiting via non-payment of dues is hardly classy no matter who you are....
It puts the blame on the organization for dropping the minister....
Instead of the minister for leaving the organization....
Writing a letter and mailing it to a lot of people is not walking quietly....
Especially knowing it would end up on either AFF, WS or some other forum....
His exit only shows his inability and outright refusal to join with those whom he disagrees with....

What's the matter . . . bored and looking for material to post on WS....?

Unbelievable.

I should be familiar enough with the drill by now not to be surprised, but I still am.

Some of you folks are amazing.

You just don't like the man or what he stands for, so no matter what he does he gets criticized.

Exiting for non payment is the only way to leave the UPCI....

You my friend ought ought to educate yourself if you are gonna offer opinions....

Non payment allows a man to go with no district board action and he leaves with no questions upon him....

Let's see how you spin that.....

His leaving an writing ony shows he is a man of conviction and lives by them even if he leaves 45 years of membership.....

No matter how he left....

This bunch will find a way to ridicule....

The same bunch that rejoices when liberals leave for their reasons....

I don't see anything wrong with letting your card lapse either- I don't even think the UPC objects to it especially in light of it being so close to the time.

also, many of the ones who left in "93 did the same
