I really think even those called to the ministry should get a secular degree and get a taste of the real world. I like the Baptist model- A minister does not become a full minister until 33 years old and only with a masters degree.

I like that too. Although tasting the "real world" doesn't require a secular degree. Degrees are over-rated, ask any rich man. (Coming from a man with a degree by the way)

There was a time when I would have agreed with you wholeheartedly, and I still agree in principle.

Give me someone with real world and real job experience any day.

However, in our economy and our current professional climate, degrees are becoming very important, if for nothing else, to help one get their foot in the door for an interview.

I heard on the news this morning that 2008 brought 2 million job losses. There are a LOT of people on the streets right now looking for jobs, and employers can choose to be MUCH more picky than they were a few years ago.

When I begin to peruse resumes to hire people (and in spite of the number of people in the pool, I'm still having trouble hiring good engineers and project managers to come to Omaha!) I start with the education section, then go to the work history.

If I have a choice of hiring someone with or without a degree, who roughly have the same experience, I'm going to interview the degreed candidate first.

Guess it depends on if they want to be an employer or an employee. Rich Dad Poor Dad has some good stuff on this. I don't discourage college, neither does it disappoint me if a young man doesn't want to attend - as long as he has a plan.

Wow, I would love to go to a UPCI endorsed college; however, they are not accredited due to a doctrinal position (namely oneness). The school I would've chosen would have been IBC.

In a couple of weeks I will be starting at Indiana Wesleyan. WOO HOO!!!

I attended IBC...it is the cutting edge UPC college I think...Gateway is a close 2nd and may surpass them soon...lol!

The Urshan Graduate School is the one that the UPC has really been pushing because it soon will be accredited or maybe it already is.

I wish I would've went to secular college first...but my parents were afraid I would "backslide"...So, the MRS program at IBC came calling...
