The bible is very clear about church attendance, blame the preacher all you want but you should be actively looking for a new church home if you cant submit to the one you currently have or had.....To just not go, well, that's on you and it's wrong.......it's far more than a pastor asking his saints to not wear a moustache or short sleeves on the platform.
We all draw our lines in the sand at different points, who cares if some are more conservative than others? Is it REALLY that big of a deal?? You are a grown person, if you dont agree, the pastor isnt going to whip you or hang you from the highest tree at sunset, you just probably wont be on the platform. So?? And if the pastor is some kind of tyrant, well find another one...but get off your butt and LOOK for one!. Stop sitting back and making excuses.
Wonder how long someone would stay employed at McDonalds if they refused to wear that USELESS visor?

In the thirty years since leaving the UPC, my family has never been without a church. Some folks may be wandering in indecision but most are active in the kingdom and have long since moved on.
The strong influence of separation teaching from childhood can be very hard to be released from, this is not only true of the UPC but also of many others with different views. Some believe this is because it is hard to leave truth, however since it is true of other groups that differ from the UPC doctrinally, that is not necessarily accurate. Folks need time to sort things out thru prayer and study, a type of deprogramming or detoxing.
If you are in a church where you just abide by what the leadership says without personal understanding, you are not in relationship with Jesus, you are just religious.
You can certainly serve God in the UPC, but there is a tendency to follow the crowd rather than to 'know Jesus personally'. Does your church encourage you to "personally" know Jesus, not just to know about Him, but to "know" Him in personal fellowship?JMHOs
