Question for Women ONLY! Need your input here

:girlfriendOkay, I admit it I am a little slow to get on the band wagon with the latest trends. I think I'm pretty fashionable but at times I feel like I am waaaaaaaaaaaaay behind times. Here is my question... "Hosiery" so it appears that hosiery is a thing of the past from what i've read in various fashion mags. In one I just read lately a women tried to embarass her significant other by wearing what she called "suntan opaque church lady hose"! So I can grasp this in the heat of summer, great pedicure no hose, works for me. But it is now the dead of winter! It actually snows up where I live in AZ and so what do all you fashion conscious women wear when it is cold or snowy in your area? Oh and please don't say pants because that is not a current option for me:jolly! Dora.......your imput here would be great since you are the one who turned us on to SPANKS!!!

Pragmatist 12-25-2007 09:09 PM

I still wear hosiery (and I consider myself young). However, I do not wear suntan opaque hosiery; hopefully that's what they were mocking. :)

LaGirl 12-25-2007 09:52 PM

I NEVER wear hose. i live in the south. if i lived in the north it would be hose or tights....but NOT suntan! lol

bethola 12-26-2007 09:21 AM

Let's face it.....I need to COVER MY LEGS!! They are 53 years old and worked for a NURSE for 25 years! Plus, I live in Kentucky where we do have seasons. I wear tights or some sort of colored hosiery (mostly cream, nude or black). In summer, I use Jergen's tanning lotion and wear no hosiery.

rapunzelgirl 12-26-2007 11:33 AM

I consider myself very fashion-counscious, but I'm a little old-fashioned about these types of rules. My mom, who is a true Southern lady, raised me that you don't wear hose with strappy sandals and you don't wear strappy sandals after labor day or before easter...period. Never. No questions asked. I loooove all my strappy little shoes, but they go into storage on the day after labor day.

So, I always have on socks, hose, tights, etc. in the winter, and no, I don't wear pants. If it's for church or something else dressy I wear very sheer panty hose in black, ivory, or flesh color. I've found a shade of hosiery at Victoria's Secret that matches my skin tone perfectly. During the week for work I wear tights if I need to. I love to shop for cool, patterned tights. Target is a good place to look but they sell out quickly.

Rhoni 12-26-2007 12:05 PM

Just don't wear white:) Fashion mistake! LOL.

I like self-tanner and french pedicure with sandels. Pants in the winter with warm socks:)

Blessings, Rhoni

I love TIGHTS, TIGHTS, AND MORE TIGHTS!!! Striped ones, colored ones, herring bone pattern, fishnet over sheer black hose is cute, patterned hosiery is FUN, but be careful not to get crazy with too many patterns going on in your outfit.

If you're wearing solids adding pattern in your hosiery is FABULOUS! Also, monochromatic dressing is fun when you put different textures of the same color all together. For example: A shiny satin silk camisole under a crochet or delicate mesh cardigan over a knee length wool or velvet pencil skirt with striped or fish net tights and knee-high boots all in deep chocolate brown could be stunning.

In my humble opinion, the hosiery industry needs to do the women of the world a HUGE favor and STOP (for love of GOD!) manufacturing Suntan Colored hose! STOP THE MADNESS!

No hose in warm weather - a nice tan or sunless tan (NOT ORANGE!), a beautiful pedicure and toe-flattering sandals is definitely the way to go! Thank God for deliverance.

We had to wear hose on chorale tour and it was truly a HORRIBLE experience - still traumatized...but I'll be all right! LOL

I love tights, too. Plus, they're much warmer than pantyhose in the winter, if that's what you're after.

To quote a line from "Steel Magnolias"...."You were brought up Right!" Long i sound in Right! LOL
Me too! No white below the waist OR sandals after Labor Day or before Easter! They tease me all the time at church about this! LOL

LOL! :killinme

The line in that movie that prompted this quote is one of my favorite lines ever. My sisters and I quote it often.

"I haven't left the house without Lycra on these thighs since I was fourteen."

One of the best movies ever!

Loving all the info here so far!! Here is my thing with tights....they are usually to thick looking and to me they look like I have on my granny's leggings. So I've taken to wearing colored hosiery which is usually in black, navy, cream or chocolate depending on the color scheme of the outfit I'm wearing and these hose look the way I think tights should look. Any one know of a good brand of tights that don't look like your granny's leggings when you have them on?

Dora 12-26-2007 04:49 PM

Opaque hosiery accomplishes the same effect...but you have to get tights with a good amount of SPANDEX in 'em so they don't bunch or pucker at the ankles and knees. There is a brand at Dillards that I like. I'll have to check on it and let you know.

I kinda like the thickness of tights vs. opaque hose. It's one of the things I love about cold weather - getting to wear tights!!! Yay!

Oh that would be great, let me know the brand because we actually have a Dillards here in our little town. Also have you tried the SPANX tights? I read in a Magazine that Spanx made them also.

Blubayou 12-26-2007 07:02 PM

OK, I am old fashioned- I was taught that a lady is never completely dressed unless she has hose on. ( Plus I have large thighs- chaffing you know) So I wear hose most of the time when I am going out, except when it is blazing hot outside. I wear them to church always. I wear tights in the winter. I like the Walmart - George - brand. They are not too thick.

dizzyde 12-26-2007 07:52 PM

I agree with everyone on the tights, I couldn't live without them in the winter! Also, if it gets really cold I start wearing my skirts a lot longer than I normally do, long skirts and boots look really cute. I live in boots in the winter.

This is EXACTLY what SPANX was invented for! They're sort of like wearing control top hose, but not so hot. You get the slenderizing effects without having to encase your legs in stretchy synthetic fibers! Yay!

Felicity 12-26-2007 08:27 PM

Dark hose and tights (but no pattern or texture) in the winter.

Bare legs and sandals in the summer.

I'm not fashionable. But I am warm. I wear feetless tights with knee high socks under ankle length, heavy, skirts. In the summer, I wear socks under ankle length skirts. I don't wear dress shoes, my feet/hips/back don't tolerate them at all. I hate hose, besides it just isn't right in the sort of shoes I do wear.

Titus2Mom 12-27-2007 05:12 AM

I hate hosiery, and don't even own any. In the cold, I wear tall socks that I get from http://www.sock-dreams.com (there are some racy stockings on there, but their over the knee, and thigh-high knit socks are great!) and if it is really cold, I pair those with some leggings, like cuddleduds or silk "long johns" and a heavier skirt.

Since I wear longer skirts, most of the time you can't even see but an inch or two of my socks...if at all and generally can't see my leggings at all.

I currently live in the south, but even when I travel to visit family "up yonder," this combo keeps me nice and warm. Even in Chicago in the middle of winter. This also kept me nice and warm through the winters in Germany.

Love Cuddle Duds! I wore them to New York and Maine and stayed nice and cozy warm.

Thanks for the website! They have some adorable socks and tights on there. And pretty reasonably priced, too!

This is an interesting thread. I was surprised by how many of you all don't wear nylons in the summer. I hate nylons with a passion. I usually don't wear any during the summer, but last year our pastor came down hard on women not wearing hosiery. So, I try to be sensitive and end up wearing knee-highs to church. But, even those are horrible for you and hot! For the winter I bought some footless leggings and wear those under my skirts with socks over my feet. I really like the leggings. They are warm, don't run like tights, and look nice.

I have to ask though - what is the deal with women wearing white hosiery? I have seen it with a black skirt and black shoes more times than I can count. My mom always taught me to wear nude nylons or opaque nylons that match my skirt with shoes that also match. Am I missing something? :)

Okay I have to admit (as Dora probably cringes as she reads my confession)that I sometimes wear a black dress with cream sheer hose and black shoes that have cream detail on them as does the dress. Also I think a White dress with red trim looks great with sheer cream hosiery and red shoes....

Am I stuck in the 80's? Dora we await your words of wisdom or anyone else out there:penguin

1992 01-02-2008 08:27 PM

I do think it would be cute with your red and white skirt to wear cream hose with red shoes. I can see that. But I've noticed a lot of Pentecostal women wearing dark skirts, dark shoes and white almost tight-like hose with an outfit that has little to no white in the rest of it. I just always thought it cut you in half to do that. But then, I've never been super "fashion" savy. :)

lol! i love it! I live in the cold cold north and I wear tights! I too like all kinds. plain, striped, ribbed, anything! They are great! I wear nylons to church because I just can't see wearing my nice dresses without them... Suntan???? NO WAY... In the summer, I usually don't wear them.

...not sure what Dora will say...BUT...I think both of those dresses would look MUCH better with nude hosiery, or better yet, bare tanned legs in your red shoes (or black...whichever). And you know, it might look cute to switch things up and wear the black shoes with the CREAM dress, and the red shoes with the BLACK dress. :) (But only if you AREN'T wearing those cream colored pantyhose.) Your shoes don't need to be the same color as your dress. IMO, if you're going to wear pantyhose, they should be the same color as your skin. No darker; no lighter. If you're wearing tights, different rules apply.
Tights can be fun and get away with it. Pantyhose are never fun. They're either the sexy ones, or they're utilitarian. There really isn't any in between.

P.S. Just a pet peeve of mine, but: I don't think FISHNETS are ever appropriate for the platform. There. I said it. I feel so much better now. Plus, unless you have legs the diameter of a can of tomato paste, you are dividing them up into hundreds of parts, making them appear so much larger than they really are, and honestly, who wants that? :D Now, Dora's recommendation for wearing them over sheer black pantyhose sounds interesting...would probably look great casual, with some boots...still not sure about for church, though...even as a second layer.

Can you define "came down hard"? Just curious as to the reasons.... :coffee2

I mean, if you have a lot of women who don't shave their legs...but then, pantyhose doesn't really help with that unless you're wearing opaque...

commonsense 01-02-2008 09:51 PM

I'm old school and always wear hosiery for church or being dressed up. I have no problem with bare legs in summer if you are young and have great legs.

I agree with the writer in regard to summer, bare legs and chafing. In my younger days of dresses all the time, I often wore "pettipants" under my skirts in hot weather, so I could still wear sandals.

In the winter, tights and opaque hose are wonderful. If you have issues with your veins the heavier fabrics also conceal imperfections.

Trouvere 01-02-2008 10:52 PM

I love to wear patterened tights.
Dora I might try that chocolate brown idea.I look great in that color.
I like spanx but they are so tight in the midsection and the knee highs
are ten bucks a pair.I do wear them occasionally
I like thin black hose that are sandalfoot.I do have a pedicure always.
I don't like to be bear legged but that is my preference unless its summer and I have some really nice sandals on.I don't however wear them to church.I go to a larger church and love to have the chance to dress classy.I just do.
Right now I have a great vintage style coat with a faux black collar that I just love with boots.I admit I have over fifty pair of shoes and three pair of boots right now.More could come to visit later if I so desired. That depends on whether I find more I like before winter is over.

SavedLou 01-02-2008 11:20 PM

in winter i wear tights w/shorter skirts and trouser socks with longer ones. no hose for me in summer! i live in open toed shoes with a pedicure then. i hate hose and only wear them when i'm wearing a suit and heels and haven't shaved. lol! i had to wear suntan opaque ones with my danceline costumes in high school (pre-upc) and they were not pretty up close but were shiny from the football field! :)

SavedLou 01-02-2008 11:22 PM

another lol...i "helped" my friend get into her spanx one day! they work but oh my...HILARIOUS!

I guess I'm a little oldfashoned some things die hard, but at over 50 I think I am entitled, lol

I cannot understand why or HOW women cannot wear some type nylons, especially for church, I ALWAYS wear them as part of my normal grooming when preparing to attend church service, I don't believe in THAT casual for church svc; I think its a bit too 'sensual' for women to bear their ankles (yes old fashioned I know I know) plus I think they look ODD., no one has THAT perfect legs, and if they do they should be reserved for husband only ( especially IF married) ; I've seen pastors wives wear sandals only in summer, I consider it improper and not a good testimony for the younger new convert sisters; I don't see what the deal is about hosiery being "hot" I live in the most humid weather and most everything bothers me, except for pantyhose., in fact I feel better like I am properly dressed wearing them, with dresses or skirts and close toed shoes.
I never wear open toed., for more than one reason. All this is strictly my opinion and convictions.
Okay will sit here and shield my body from flying tomatoes now. :D

Maybe that sounded to harsh. He just said from the pulpit that no woman should come to church with bare legs. Ever. And then he repeated this quite a few times through various services for about 3 months. :) I know, it surprised me too, but my mother didn't comiserate with me. She is old school and chewed me out for not wearing nylons in the first place. "A lady is not fully dressed unless she has nylons on." I personally, believe them to be an instrument of torture and hate them with a passion. :)

My husband thinks nylons are more immodest than not wearing them because they make a woman's leg look better than it is - smoother, prettier, more attractive. Just his take on the situation, and an interesting one at that.

I agree with you here. At one point in my married life, I thought fishnets were kind of cute, and my husband was horrified. He told me exactly what image they portray of the women who wear them. That took care of that for me! :)Sometimes a man's opinion gives you a different viewpoint to consider.

QueenEsther 01-03-2008 08:14 AM

I HATE panty hose but in our church you have to have them on when on the platform...:( that is really the only rule I disagree with! LOl! But.....in the winter I usually wear knee boots with just about everything and if it is really cold I will wear tights too. If I have to wear panty hose I wear really really sheer ones that look natural but they do not keep you warm at all! So, if you want warmth get some long skirts, some knee boots or some tights!! :)

I used to wear them all the time, nothing too crazy looking, but now that we are in the ministry I am so careful of what I wear that I haven't wore them for quite a while! Plus I don't really think they are in much now as they were a few years ago. Leggins are in BIG time and they are cute if you are skinny! Lol! That's is another thought!

mine thinks the same way! i told him i was thinking of getting some and he was like "um...NO" and told me what i would look like :) he also doesn't want me to wear those stiletto's that criss cross up your ankle a little. we have some girls at church that wear them and he says they are way too racy looking.

no tomatoes here sister :) but i am sooooo glad our church doesn't have any platform standards other than being decent looking. i guess it's b/c i wasn't raised in this but i just don't get it...what in the world do rules about pantyhose and different shoes have to do with worshipping God? i guess it's all in what your used to but i say the Lord could care less how we're dressed as long as we are modest and not sloppy looking. just my 2 cents... ps. now i'm wondering what some of the older ladies say about me...:christmoose

Totally agree with you there... Men see things completely differently than women.. and they're the ones we have to be careful not to cause temptation.

I'm a white girl (and I mean white.. I tan like a lobster) from the north, so in the winters I wear tights or pantyhose... and in the summer I tend to wear longer skirts because I've always been insecure of my white legs... I'm coming around though... I've been married 10 years and I realize he likes my white legs so I don't care what anyone else thinks of them. :jolly
