The Pentecostals of ........(Arrogance)?
 

Has anyone considered the arrogance of placing on your church sign...
"THE PENTECOSTALS OF TIMBUKTU (OR ANY OTHER CITY)" unless...

You are indeed the only Pentecostals in that city.

You don't want or forsee anyone else ever starting another Pentecostal church in your city.

I really don't mean this to appear mean spirited toward those who already call their churches by this title.

I just wonder how other Pentecostal churches in those cities feel?

I can understand "The Pentecostals of Main Street (or some neighborhood)" but to make the statement that you are indeed "THE PENTECOSTALS OF NEW YORK CITY!" I don't understand it.

Kinda like "Assemblies of God". Does that imply your are the ONLY assembly for God?

They are all exclusive terms...but I don't think the AOG believes only THEY are the assemblies of God, nor the Church of God..

Would you be happy if they changed their church name to "Some Pentecostals of Pheonix"?

I kinda see your point, but just don't really see it being a meritable debate.

Well, one of my brothers pastors a church in a small town I call "Mayberry, USA." One gas station, their one and only grocery store just closed, a drug store, pizza joint, and a few other things...

The name on their church sign is First Pentecostals of Virden, and since they are the only Pentecostal church in Virden, I guess he is not arrogant, eh?!

More nitpicking, IMHO...oh well...

Maybe when those churches started they were the only ones at that time. Just like the ones that are named First church.

I saw a sign I liked once "The Church in so and so".

I imagine it caused a fuss I have no idea what they was.

The first church I remember using this was "the Pentecostals of Alexandria"...pastored by Anthony Mangun.

It seemed that it became popular in the Apostolic movement after that...

The church in Alexandria was well established when they started calling themselves by this name...interesting enough is that the "real" name of the curch is First UPC....so "The Pentecostals..." is like thier nickname.

I imagine those bumper stickers from a few years ago really got under some folks skin...

If you are threatened or intimidated by a group of Christians claiming to be the Pentecostals of any city, then you need to get a life.

I think the other churches in that particular city should also call themselves the Pentecostals of ________, thereby including themselves with the same group of believers. Oh, but that wouldn't work would it? Since in most cases they want to set themselves apart from other churches. Disunity is the end result and the desired one.

I don't think it sounds dorky. I like it much better than names identifying with any organization. Better yet, why not call yourselves: The Christians of ____________.

I thought POA was original but then Everyone and their mama started trying to be POA. many of the cities' names that are attached with "The Pentecostals of ______" just doesn't have the right ring to it

We have some churches in a city and another group has churches they painted bigs signs saying the true Apostolics truely Penecostal...or something like that...lol...

I don´t pay attention to stuff like that...when I get to the point I have to brainwash my people and puts signs like that on my churches telling people we are the only ones then please come get me and put me in the rest home.

No church and no person should think they are better than the other person. Our lesson Sunday was on humility...not long ago I told a person they were going to have to be humble to work for God...the reply I got then they had rather not be a worker.

No matter what we deem ourselves to be the book still reads the first shall be last and the last shall be first.

I do not know who is Assembly of God and who is Jesus name. I am a Jesus Name missionary but it was not the jesus name folks that were the first missionaries to Brazil it was the Assembly of God...

I have spoke at several of their ladies meetings and churches. In fact my daughter in law (one of them) her father is a well known Assembly of God preacher in his state.

I feel that I am blessed with a little more truth than him but his first wife left this world in a bus wreck coming home from a convention in the mountains..the bus turned over and she was pinned under the wheel of the bus and left this world taking in tongues...and she NEVER heard of baptism in Jesus name. I ask you, Whose sin was this?

And never think I do not value what I feel as truth but let us all be careful how we talk to each other.

I have given my whole life telling others about the Mighty God in Christ. I am very humbled to think that He that requires blood would think of us and robe Himself in flesh and become God among us.

Naming a church "The Pentecostals of _______" is nowhere near the same as "The ONLY Pentecostals of _______," which is what's being implied in regards to feelings of arrogance.

It's not arrogant. They're not saying they're the ONLY Pentecostals of that city. They're simply identifying themselves as Pentecostals in that city.
