The passing of Rev. Naomi Carter
This is a precious lady I was blessed to have known, and one of her granddaughters was the only other person to graduate with me in the private school we attended together. She was a wonderful woman.
Carter, Sister Naomi Nadine BUSH - Sister Naomi Nadine Carter, 82, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 8:05 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at her home. Naomi Nadine Goshen was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Fontenot, Ind., to Roy Thomas and Thelma (Elliott) Goshen. She was so tiny and delicate that they carried her around on a little pillow and referred to her as a little doll, hence came her nickname, "Doll." She was known as Doll throughout her school and adult years until becoming a pastor. Her family moved to Bush in 1930. She graduated from Hurst-Bush High School in 1943. She met her lifetime true love, Robert Carter, at the age of 16. He returned home from World War II in January 1946 and they married a few days later, Jan. 15, 1946. They shared over 60 years of marriage until his passing on Jan. 10, 2007. To this loving union were born two children, Robert J. Jr. and Linda Susan. Naomi gave her heart to the love of her life, the Lord Jesus Christ, in the hospital room of a very sick daughter in March of 1949. She promised to serve the Lord all the days of her life whether her daughter lived or died. She loved the Lord faithfully all her days, living her testimony even until her departure from this life and entering her long awaited Heavenly home. She became a minister with the United Pentecostal Church International in 1955 and was ordained in 1981. She was co-pastored in Westlawn, with the Rev. Rita Medlin from 1971 to 1973, pastored in Colp from 1979 to 1989 and at Crossroads Tabernacle in Hurst from 1996 until her stroke in March 2006. She still served as Pastor Emeritus at Crossroads Tabernacle. Prior to pastoring, Sister Carter worked as an item control supervisor in Goldblatts Department Store in Chicago from 1955 to 1973. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and Renee Carter Jr. of Crestwood; daughter and son-in-law, Linda S. and David Godfrey of Bush; six grandchildren and their spouses, Melissa Zizas and husband Robert of Cresthill, Robert D. Carter and wife, Suzie, of Manhattan, Sandra Wyskochil and husband, John, of Mesa, Ariz., Melanie Noland and husband, Kevin, of Plainfield, Christopher Godfrey of Manhattan and Ryan Godfrey of Phoenix; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher and Amber McNulty, J.R. Wyskochil, C.J. Godfrey, Clayton and Madeline Noland Rachel Bassillion, Michael Robert Carter; several nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Mary "Remember the Biscuits" Nichols of Houston and Julie Kabella of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, William R. Goshen; and one sister, Gloria Sedlacke. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, in Crossroads Tabernacle Apostolic Church in Hurst, with the Rev. Terry Erwin officiating and the Revs. Linda Kyzar, Michael Glasco, Lois Erwin, Jack Jenkins, John Graham and Lloyd Dunaway co-officiating. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. |
Will be praying for the family. It's great to hear of another wonderful pastor.

Her husband, who passed away last year, was the bus driver for several decades. He drove that bus until the Sunday before he passed.
Lots of women preachers and pastors in that area also. |

praying for the church family
I had the opportunity to attend the M.A.W.P conference held at the church there in Ill. this past Summer. Sis. Carter was too ill to attend a service we had in her honor as well as the installation service for the new Pastor-Rev. Linda Kyzar. I am sorry to hear of Sis. Carter's passing. Her family and the church family will be in my thoughts and prayers!

She was an old time warrior for the cause...

Re: The passing of Rev. Naomi Carter
Yes sister Carter was a wonderful women of God. She lived what she believed.
She always wanted to have a church service when she passed away. WE had song service, and special singing.. Bro Erwin preached a Acts 2:38 message. Sis, Erwin was Sis Carters close friend growing up and she spoke and did such a wonderful job.. You could feel God so strong. I wouldn't have been surprise if God didn't raise her from the dead.... She was ready to go.. Her husband died a year ago, and she would write down, the Lord was suppose to take us together... She did not fear death. She suffered with recurring brain tumors and they would give her radiation to keep it down.. They had done a few surgery also. The last radiation she had done she told me that she wont go through another one.. That she is ready to be with the Lord. She said that if they Lord wanted her then, she wanted to go gracefully. She was very graceful.. I wish everyone one here could have really known her like I did.. I hope I can be just half the women of God that she was. I had a dream about her last night, I was in this house that had mountains around, well I opened the door and I saw her walking on this mountain and there was sheep around her.. I yelled for everyone in the house to come and look and we all started speaking in tongues and shouting... I don't know if that had any meaning. I just never had a dream like that before. By the way be praying for her daughter. IF it wasn't for her daughter and God, Sis Carter wouldn't have made it this long, but she is having a very hard time dealing with this,, she had stopped her life just to take care of her mother. I know God will bring her though this, but she could still use your all prayers. I could go on and on, but I wont. God bless you all, louwho |

Re: The passing of Rev. Naomi Carter
Louwho, Linda's daughter Sandy is a good friend of mine. We graduated together (we were the only ones to graduate from the church school that year) when we lived near Chicago many years ago. We lost track of each other for several years until I contacted her former pastor when he was a missionary in Jordan and he informed me that Linda lived in Bush and at the time, I lived in Herrin!
So I visited Sis. Carter's church not yet knowing that she was Sandy's grandma and touched base with Linda and the next week, Sandy was coming for a visit. I've seen her a couple times since then, but I no longer live in the area. We will keep in touch, but I would have loved to have seen her and her family last week. As for me, I'm not sure you know who I am and I don't believe we've officially met, but you know lots of people I know and you and I have talked, although a couple years ago. In fact, you are still on my MSN list...LOL! I just don't use it much anymore. |

His family was from Brookfield, around Chicago. He married a girl from Jenks, Oklahoma ... I think her first name was Pam but I'd have to dig my old yearbooks out to remember her last name. Just an observation ... the Illinois District produced a lot of "women preachers." In addition to those mentioned, I preached a revival way back in 1980 for Lawrence Jones in Effingham, Il. I forget his wife's name but she was a fairly well-known woman preacher there in Illinois. |
Re: The passing of Rev. Naomi Carter
Yes, Terry Erwin is from Brookfield, Il. originally. His dad was pastor and many years the Illinois District UPC secretary. His dad was also a math teacher. His mother Lois, also a speaker at the funeral, was also a preacher and a very good one if I might add. I have known Bro. Eugene and Sis. Lois Erwin since I was a little baby. Terry now pastors in Oklahoma, and is also a presbyter with the Oklahoma district. Sis. Lois Erwin has since retired and moved to Oklahoma also after the passing of her husband. The Erwins were and still are some great people. My wife and I also preached in Effingham. We held two revivals...one in June of 1975 and one in the fall of 1977. The Jones were great folks. She always served fresh strawberries with the meals for or/and with dessert. We had some good services in those days with them. What memories!

Re: The passing of Rev. Naomi Carter
Was Sister Namoi the lady that traveled with the other sister... her name escapes me right now but anyhow, she was locked in a dungeon or convent???? If so I met her at General conf. a few years ago.
she would sit in the WOF booth and sell the book about life in the convent. All these ladies were amazing. how come there aren't too many of them around anymore? |
