Dance

Is Dance Scriptural?

Dancing before the Lord was and is a significant part of temple worship before Yeshua came and after. The following scriptures are a few examples of biblical dancing! Exodus 15:20 " Also Miryam the prophet, sister of Aharon, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines, dancing," The book of Judges shows us harvest dances, Judges 21:21 "And keep watch. If the girls of Shiloh come out to do their dances, then come out of the vineyards, and each of you catch for himself a wife from the Shiloh girls, and go on to the land of Benjamin". I Samuel 21:11 shows us the people of Israel dancing in celebration of David "The servants of Akhish said to him," Isn't this David, king of the land? Weren't they dancing and singing to each other, 'Saul has killed his thousands, but David his ten thousands'?" Then we see King David himself danced with all his might before the Ark of the Covenant II Samuel 6:14 "Then David danced and spun around with abandon before Adonai, wearing a linen ritual vest". Jeremiah speaks of the restoration and return of the Israelites to Israel (which is physically happening as you read this very article) which will bring about dancing and Psalms speak of mourning turning into dancing! Jeremiah 31:4 "Once again, I will build you; you will be rebuilt, virgin Israel. Once again, equipped with your tambourines, you will go out and dance with the merrymakers". Jeremiah 31:13"Then the virgin will dance for joy, young men and old men together for I will turn their mourning into joy, comfort and gladden them after sorrow." Psalm 150:4 "Praise Him with tambourines and dancing! . . . ! and Psalm 30:11 "You turned my mourning into dancing! You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy" (copied)

Re: Dance

Dancing is 'generally' something you do when your happy. It is also a blast! Ok, maybe not all the practice sessions, but when your out on the floor with the judges watching and zooming around the room, there are few feelings that are better.

I wish Pentecostal people were happier...

Re: Dance

I think many Pentecostals think that being happy and having fun (unless it involves eating) are mutually exclusive.

Re: Dance

I love to dance before the Lord, and no, I'm not "in the Spirit". That has happened a few times, but mostly it's just rejoicing in the Lord during worship times.

We have also had, in the past, dance teams for all different age levels for girls & women. It's beautiful and modest choreographed dancing and it always ushers in the presence of God. In this church we're at now, we only have a dance team for the young girls, but it is definitely worship.

If given the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance.

Is Dance Scriptural?

How about outside the context of a religious service or worship?

The dance smiley was intended. But no, I cannot dance to secular music, at least in front of anyone. Maybe I could with Eddie, but he's not a dancer, so that's a moot point. We do not allow dancing at weddings in our church building (fellowship hall). My daughter, on the other hand, LOVES to dance and has been so immersed in the Latino culture from her missions adventures, it is second nature to her.

I know no one believes this, but I still do have a few conservative hang-ups!!!:toofunny

Sherri, your honesty is refreshing.

I think dancing was a life style to the Jewish people...they danced almost on every occasion.

You think so? the jews danced all kinds of dances...

Re: Dance

As a young teen, I wondered about the logic of being let out of gym class when they taught square dancing (I didn't exactly protest at the time since I couldn't stand it), yet saw a few women looking for all the world like Haitian voodoo practitioners in church.

I don't think there is anything wrong with dancing like a Haitian voodoo practitioner in church.... Neither do I think there is anything wrong with dancing a waltz or foxtrot.

Re: Dance

Dancing is like 2nd nature to humans, just watch a baby sitting on momma's lap swaying to whatever music is playing, lol
Rhythm is inborn, I believe.
Dancing "before the LORD, TO the LORD" is always good., not so sure about secular dancing such as at nightclubs, NOPE, I can't see that as biblical. My bible says to do ALL to the GLORY OF GOD.
PERIOD.

YET I can't say that I don't get the urge sometimes in hearing an oldies song to dance to it., and sing along, brings back memories, not all good, though., and I too like the ballroom type dancin, not that I'd do that anymore, I even like to watch ( & fantasize about doing IF only I was younger) the Irish type dances (cultural?) like the River Dance form I LOVE THAT!
Its best for me anyways, in this new life I have with JESUS, out of respect & honer to Him, to stick to dancing for the LORD it is BY FAR the best dance form I've ever done in my life!

I love to dance. I love to dance at home to oldies or just fast dance music. I would love to take lessons and learn to ballroom dance with my husband but I have no where locally to go after the fact, so I don't guess it would really be much fun to learn if I couldn't use it. :dance :dance

I don't feel guilty about dancing because I am not shy about dancing before the Lord, so it's not something that I show emotions about one place but not at church.
:shockamoo

Re: Dance

I don't think just anykind of dancing pleases the Lord however I saw a group of jews dancing the hora that had converted into critianity. I thought it was beautiful and felt no sin in it.
No You will not find us doing a ballet or something on that order but I really see nothing wrong with being joyful. There must be balance in everything. Oh course my kids are Latin and they have a complete different nature than Americans.

Someone said one time that we were the people of long hair long dresses long sleeves and long faces.

Lotta truth in that ...so sad.

Re: Dance

Thats just poppycock! [long faces]
Why focus on something so negative each one of us needs to do our part in how our countenance projects to 'the world' remembering that we are only human, we can't always be grins & teeth, lol We have bad days too. I tire of hearing every & any little excuse in the world from people as to WHY NOT give up their lives for JESUS., when is someone gonna come up with something original?
People should just be honest and admit "well I just don't want to give up my life, my ways, MY WILL to GOD" and quit lookin to the Pentecostal people as but one of many excuses NOT TO.
Just my ramblins which may or may not make sense, maybe I'm just venting.
Sometimes IF people look SAD, whether its true or not, people will automatically think the worse, it doesn't occur to them that m a y b e that look might be a serious, or somber look..NO, of course not., forget that we are to be "sober faced"., not drunk, silly or rowdy with other spirits., or made up with face paints resembling a clown, all jokes and laughs.
Its one thing to have the JOY OF THE LORD which is 2nd nature to me, but at times in looking at the state of this world, upon hearing THE bad NEWS, watching younguns play in the street on a Sunday morning (instead of in church) it can LOOK like sadness upon my face as I reflect that not everyone loves JESUS., I am perplexed, indeed., that not everyone loves nor belongs to JESUS., but to the 'other' one.
Above all though I rejoice that HE IS ALIVE and that compells me to dance about it!

Like this happy crazy zany dynamic duo?

http://www.durante-vita.net/images/b...grant_wood.jpg

I'll admit that things have probably changed a bit in the church (except in the most conservative of the bunch) since we first came in during the early 80's, but this is what I have ingrained in my memory.

Maybe we need to be more like this?

And you will get no disagreement from me on that!

We just don't need to look (and act) like the American Gothic couple in the process. You may be surprised how many people notice when "we" do.
