Question For Americans

Why is it when I call someone and it either goes to a call centre in the States, head office in the States, or Branch office in the States the conversation is abrupt like this:

Me: "Hi, how are you today?"
Them: "Fine, how can I help you?" (all said curtly & abruptly!"

A call centre, or head office, or branch office in Canada goes something like this:

Me: "Hi, how are you?"
Them: "Fine thanks, how are you?" (nice voice)
Me: "Not to bad, there is a lot of snow here today, we aren't used to that!
Them: (Laughter) I bet you are not used to it where you are, my call display shows that you are in Vancouver, in Toronto last night it snowed 15 CM & is minus 30!"

The conversation cab go on like this for a few minutes depending on if it is busy or not.

It seems the Americans don't banter at all in friendly talk.

Has anyone else seen this, is it a policy?

Is there a lack of fiber in diets??

Why the crankiness?:hypercoffee

It's the foreigners that are driving the cabs and answering the phones.

I have too.

It is just my experience of about two to one you will get some one I described.

BTW, the description is curt & business like.

Not mean & nasty.

I didn't know there was any call centers in the U.S., I thought they were all in India.

Ah... like, to the point. I used to talk to some folks from New York state alot for my job... they were VERY to the point. But that was one particular company... maybe they were hard to work for!

I think that some companies are beginning to bring them back to the U.S. Hard to conduct business if you can't understand the other person.

Thats what I was thinking, how did you get a hold of one in America? We Americans have been trying to get an American on the phone since America was founded.

Good point. That's why English should be the standard.

Only southerners and Texans know how to pronounce y'all. Yankees however cannot.

Right, that can be seriously annoying. I think they put these people with certain companies so you won't try to cancel your account!!
