Are You Somewhat "Old Fashioned?"
Just reading on another thread about change reminds me of some things that don't change.
I am old fashioned about some things, the things I will not do are not "Sin" per se, but I still prefer the old way. I won't wear anything but a suit & tie (white shirt) to an official Church service. I like the idea of an Altar call where Ladies are on the left & men on the right. I have been in service where it was mixed and when people started praying for others, men just in from the world felt "led" to place an arm or hand on a nearby ladies shoulder, or hands. I will call Pastor, or leaders if I can not make a service. These are not "sin" just some "old fashioned paths" I enjoy walking. Are you "old fashioned?" Are there some traditions you enjoy participating in? |

I like the tradition of wearing your best for church; I don't care for the casual look.

Re: Are You Somewhat "Old Fashioned?"
There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a little old fashioned. :)
I like singing old hymns of the faith. I like listening to "oldies" on the radio. I like hearing church bells ring on Sundays. I like listening to a REAL piano instead of a synthesized keyboard in church. I like old fashioned anointed singing and preaching. I like sitting with my wife, children and their spouses, and grandchildren all together on a pew in church. But....I've learned to roll with a lot of the new stuff! |

The gospel is the message. As long as the message remains intact the methods can change to adapt to varying societal and generational adaptations. Too often people attach methods irreversibly to the message and can find themselves judging the message as inadequate when, in reality, it is a different method that they are truly disagreeing with. |

I'll never forget taking my children and a few of their friends to a Kirk Franklin concert in the late 90's. My opinion at the time was that his music was more entertainment instead of true worship. It was more about the beat than about the words, etc. The concert didn't really do anything for me, but before it was over, my children and theirs friends had tears rolling down their faces and walked up to the front to pray. I had an epiphany! The songs that reached me, will not reach this new generation! |

While I don't consider myself old fashioned, I'm not completely "out there" either. One yardstick I use is "does this show respect?". I do like looking nice for church, but have NEVER liked the classic used-car salesman type suit that I remember most men wearing. I've always liked more of a tux look then classic suit look.

Re: Are You Somewhat "Old Fashioned?"
I still love the old songs although I don't care to sing them every Sunday... I miss hearing them.
I usually am dressy or dressy/casual (meaning no denim) on Sunday's. I don't call elders by their first names... unless they are relatives. I hate a dead dry song service. I don't like the music to overpower the voices... or the music to be so quiet you can't hear it either. I don't like to see people over the age of four, drinking or eating during church. (Unless they are about to keel over into a diabetic coma if they don't get sugar) I think if you're late for church you should sit at the back and not prance all the way up to the front. I miss the tambourine and wish one of the young people who can play well, would make it cool again. I like the full sound of an organ. I miss campmeeting on the campground with the smell of french fries cooking during the tail end of service. I prefer services with a nice mix of old, newer, and brand new songs. I like "song services" to last longer than 3 songs, 2 of which only those under 30 know. I like it when we sing for a while and there are songs that we can all sing together in unity. I feel like we've forgotten how beautiful and ministering singing unto the Lord in one accord can be.. and thus shortened up that part of the service. I miss the old fashioned half hour song services sometimes... (I think once in a while they wouldn't hurt) I think Sunday nights, we should take our time and if people have to leave, they can... but there should be at least one service a week where we aren't rushed to keep a schedule. I think I can safely say I am a nice mix between old fashioned and modern in terms of the old Pentecostal ways... I think we need to change our methods but I don't think we have to completely throw everything old out, to be "relavent" I think the two can peacefully co-exist if both parties are willing. Our elders gave us what we have today, and I like it when we can move forward while still respecting them. |
