Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
Economists are saying it's a good idea. Fears of runaway inflation are rising.
Not trying to be a doomsday guy, but my family is preparing an emergency plan. Just in case. |

What is the emergency going to be?
High prices? How do you plan for that? |

Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
Costco sells emergency supplies to feed of family of 4 for a few weeks, like military rations--I just heard the stuff was nasty!
But I guess it would be better than nothing- |
Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
I dont know how one stocks food for long term emergencies.
they simply dont last forever. it is always a good policy to eliminate debt. |
Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
I have seen food with a "use by date" as far out as 2 yrs. I ate some chk in a can today that expired in 09. Guess those would be good. Any other non-perishables out there that hold there date for a long time?

Flashback - Y2K.
What to do? Nothing. |
Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
Homeland security has a series of ads running currently asking us if we (families) have prepared for a national crisis. Have we prepared a backstock of food, formulated a meeting place if something catastrophic occurred and the like.

Up in Canada, especially in Vancouver, they are planning for the "Big One" a high 7-8 Earthquake that wipes out the City.
Learning from Katrina & other disasters, even if the US sends help, they say expect to be on your own for 72 hours at least! |
Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
Eliminating debt? YES!!! All we owe is mortgage debt.
Stockpiling food? Only because I keep buying things that I forget are already sitting in my pantry! |

I think it is a good idea to always be prepared. What would it hurt to have a pantry with nonperishables in your home? I am not espousing doomsday. I am just saying OUR OWN GOVERNMENT is concerned about inflation and terrorist attacks that could cripple us. |

Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
Here is my emergency action plan
Mathew 6 25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. |

What if you stocked up on canned goods and nonperishables now? At the worst you would save a lot of money in the future. You would stave off high prices for a while longer. |

Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
On the realty side, I heard there are a bunch of banks in trouble in the US.
If they fail while it won't be the end of the world, it does mean that a lot of savings & investments will be lost & wiped out. Preserving banks will be more important than preserving investments. |

Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
Those of you mocking are like the prototypical Pentecostals who say "why do I care about the environment? The Lord's coming anyway."
And then he hasn't come yet (even though he will) and we breathe filthy air, drink filthy water and live in a filthy environment. My point? God expects us to use common sense. |

I just have "88 Reasons God Will Come in 1988", Y2K and all the other scary things that circulate in the news. I even saw the bones of Adam and Eve on the front page of the National Enquirer while checking out. Imagine that publication validating the Bible? Hilarious. I told the person behind me, "Well, at least we know the Bible is for real now, huh?" :ursofunny I read reports that are contrary to the economic woes being heralded over the news "during an election year". Just me. |
Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
What would happen if a terrorist attack damaged our infrastructure and it took a long time to repair it, Pressing On?
Remember how the banks closed and the stock market closed right after 911? That was just two planes hitting a couple of buildings in New York. (not minimizing the sorrow here) What would happen if a city was lost? How long til we recovered AS A NATION? |

Only problem - her husband's family buys them everything - their house, gives them a gas card, etc.. Her husband will never learn, I'm afraid. My sister is greatly annoyed by this. I said, "Listen, if that's how they operate in their family, then let God bless you with it." |
