Ever had an allergic Reaction?
Before going to the Dentist this morning I had a frightening thing happen:
Because I have so much metal in my body I have to take two doses of antibiotic an hour before my appointment. I took 2 doses around 6 am this morning and jumped in the bath. I began itching and could see and feel my body swelling up. My lips swelled and my heart started racing. I got out of the bath and looked in the mirror an saw an aweful sight: my whole body had welts on it, my lips were gigantic, and my whole face was red - even what was supposed to be the whites of my eyes. I called my Mom to come and get me to take me to the hospital. My Mom called my two sisters, and my sister called 911. 6 medics came in and each took vital signs while one was prepping me for a benedryl shot. It scared me to death, but Mom took me on to the Dentist and I slept through getting a tooth prepped for a crown I had a very exciting day. This is the first time I ever had an allergic reation to a drug...anyone else have a story to tell? Blessings, Rhoni |

Sorry to hear this, Rhonda, but glad you are okay...
My mom said that I had a bad penicillin reaction as a kid...that's about it. |

Re: Ever had an allergic Reaction?
I am allergic to penicillin. There are some other antibiotics that I have had minor allergic reactions to. The one I am on right now makes me very dizzy, but I am taking my last one tomorrow. Glad you got help and got your dental work done. Thank the Lord you're ok.

Re: Ever had an allergic Reaction?
I am allergic to Penicillin, & other things, but the worst thing that I know of that I am allergic to is fresh Peaches.
I can have them canned, preserved, in a pie, but not fresh. I break out in welts horribly! Sounds like you may need to invest in an eppie pen! |

Thankfully I've never had the swelling and welts, but I did have two allergic reactions... the first being itching skin and the second severe pain in my abdomen both from a Penicillin allergy. The first reaction wasn't severe.. the second was. |

Re: Ever had an allergic Reaction?
I had an allergic reaction similar to yours last year. Within twenty minutes of taking a new prescription, my skin itched and then burned like I had never experienced in my life. I was so desperate I threw cold water on my body to stop the burning when I finally took three benadryl. I was about to call an ambulance when the benadryl starting kicking in, which I was very thankful for the relief.
Be sure to talk to your MD about your allergic reaction as soon as you can. Glad to hear that you made it through that experience OK... |

The last time I had a reaction was after I ate at a Chinese restaurant. Within a few blocks of the restaurant my right eye started itching like mad and the white area swelled like a blister. It was aweful. I stopped at a Target and asked their pharmacist for help. Needless to say I've not eaten shrimp since. |
Re: Ever had an allergic Reaction?
When I was 16 I was at my best friends house. She lived in Wylie in the sticks and we lived in Garl... about 12 min away. Well we had gone swimming she had one of those huge above ground pools. We had forgotten to get towels so I ran back in the house and as I was standing there fixing to get back in the pool I noticed my leg started to itch.. But I scratched it once without looking and stood there and continued to talk to her... Looked down about 2 min later and I was literally covered on both legs with fire ants. I jumped in the pool thinking it would get them off of me. WRONG!!! It just made them go up higher onto my leg... So finally me and her got them all off.. but by then both of my feet were the size of cantelopes.
I called my dad and asked him to meet me and take me to the ER.. He couldnt find my friends house if someone paid him to it was so far out in the country. So he drove to the nearest town to her and met me there.. by the time he got there my face was doing as Rhonda described hers.. and my entire legs were so swollen I couldnt walk. He called 911 from the gas station we met at and they came and said if it had been more than 5 more min I would have died... On one leg they counted over 200 fire ant bites and quit counting there! I had to carry around injection meds for years after that.. I guess I have gotten past it however as last year I got bit by a few and I am still here! LOL Was indeed the scariest thing I had ever been through! |
Re: Ever had an allergic Reaction?
The first time we gave Keith a Reese's Peanut Butter cup he was just under 2 years old. He immediately starting gasping for air and sounding like he was having a VERY severe asthma attack. We did a ventolin treatment but then just watched him. When I called the doc the next day he informed me that Keith had had a classic allergic reaction and that he should NEVER have peanuts again.
The next time he had peanuts he was given a peanut butter cookie at VBS. He spit it out and said it was "Acky". My friend brought him immediately home to us because she knew of his allergy. By the time she got to our house (4 blocks away) he was already gasping for air. I did a shot of Epinephrine, then called the Rescue Squad and Walt (who was at the Fire Station where the REscue Squad is based). They got here in record time, did another Epi shot, loaded him up and headed to the hospital. On the way, they did another shot of Epi and when we got to the ER, they immediately did yet another shot of Epi. That's FOUR shots! Then they gave him Benadryl in the IV and Ventolin treatments every 10 minutes. 7 hours later, they finally determined that he was out of the woods and would live. Their advice again was NEVER EVER EVER let him near peanuts again. So far, we've done ok with that. But we are diligent about it, believe me!!! |

I took one bite and it felt like my mouth was on fire. I thought maybe they had put some hot sauce on it or something. But it wasn't long (minute or two)until I broke out in hives and my tongue became swollen. I started sweating profusely. My eyes turned Japanese red and my tear ducts opened up like a flash flood. Eventually my lower lids became so heavy they turned inside out. It was hard to breathe. At the emergency room my doctor told me I had developed an allergy to shrimp. He said that my metabolism or something had changed, and that I shouldn't eat it anymore. Duh! lol No problem, I stopped eating it. It never bothered me to be around it until last year. My son had ordered crab legs. He was struggling to crack them open so I didn't think anything of reaching over and helping him. Dumb move. Can you say emergency room? What can I say? I'm a slow learner. |

Fortunately for us, Keith is very, very diligent about checking everything he eats before he will even touch it. And all of his friends realize the gravity of the situation so we've done ok so far. We live in a small town tho, so I'm holding my breath for when it becomes time for him to go away to college. I wonder if I can store up prayers even now for that time four years from now? |

The doctor has told us with Keith that the peanut allergy will only ever get worse. That they don't typically get better, especially when they start out as over the top of the chart as his is. She also told me that it is extremely likely that any children he produces will inherit the allergy because it does tend to run in families. Since he's adopted we don't know if he has anyone in his genetic history with the same kinds of allergies. When they tested him for allergies at age 3, they did the backscratch test for 40 different things (not peanuts. That was a blood test). He tested very positive for 39 of them (altho how they could tell I don't know since his entire back turned into one huge welt. They ended up giving him a shot of Epi to stop the reactions! The allergist told me it was the first time she had ever had to do that) |

I know I had a horrible reaction to one called Sulpha/Bactrim! Symptoms like you described....face was almost unrecognizable and tongue began to swell......horrible experience. Found out after the fact, that my deceased mom was also allergic to that stuff. Also, another time while a patient in the hospital...I was given something called Reglan. It was given as an injection and I felt funny right after the first one they gave me.....weird....I shirked it off as probably nothing. Well that night they came and gave me another injection and immedieatly I felt that same feeling and then without warning my jaws began to clinch together........just spasming.......I thought my jaws would break before they gave me something to counteract that stuff. I pray I never have to experience anything like that again. |
Re: Ever had an allergic Reaction?
I'm allergic to penicillin (and the most common substitutes). I also started itching, but it was my back and I thought I had a mosquito bite.
It was the next day that the itching increased and someone asked if I was taking anything. duh, I got the package and read the warnings.... I called the Dr and he said stop taking it immediately. I needed to have a root canal a yr or two later and they gave me a prescription. I had told them I couldn't have penicillin. Now...... I know I react to clindamycin also. Just hope I don't need any antibiotics! I have a lot of food sensitivities; just not serious enough problems to have allergy testing done. Rhoni, glad you're ok. |
