Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
There are many Catholic churches around this area with the moniker "Apostolic."
I have never seen a Catholic church with "Pentecostal" in it's name. |
Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
Our mission compound has a sign that says, "Community of the Firstborn".

Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
As a member of the Unification Church I have felt that the church's name should praise Father; that is Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

Sure is slow tonight. I guess most folks "have a life" and the rest won't rise and take any bait that is offered. Last night I couldn't keep up, people were posting so fast.

Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
None of the churches I currently attend, visit, or am aiming to attend in the future have either Pentecostal or Apostolic in the name. Considering 3 of them are actually pentecostal/apostolic, that's pretty amazing.

Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
New Life Christian Church
When we changed our name to that 7 or 8 yrs ago. We purposley did not use pentecostal or apostolic in our name. Prior to the name change we had been Midway Tabernacle UPC for over 40 years. Midway sounded like a circus to me + we have couple Midway Taverns in the area. Tabernacle.....sorry it just sounded Jewish to me. We do get the occasional out of town visitor who thinks we are "The disciples of Christ" organization. |
Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
Only one person has the name Apostolic on their church sign?
Why in the world do we call this place APOSTOLIC Friends Forum? |
Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
We're the:
Apostolic Church of our Lord Jesus Christ of the Pentecostal Faith Which Neither You or Anyone Else is Good Enough to Join, Incorporated Just kidding! But I've seen some pretty close to that! :party |

Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
Christ Church used to be Christ Church Pentecostal and I believe the legal designation may still have the Pentecostal after the name.
I think about 20 years ago they shortened the name to just Christ Church for all practical purposes. |
Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
Mount Pleasant Apostolic Church. We changed it to that 6 years ago, previously it was Mount Pleasant Meeting House.
Mainly changed it because many people thought the name was Methodist, which is what the church was originally, when it was organized in 1820. I also like the acronym, MPAC, our church slogan is iMPACting our world with the gospel |
Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
Interesting until everyone started talking about name changes...
I believe the legally incorporated name of Church of Champions is NW UPC. Name was changed years ago. Pastor only recently left the org. An interesting trend here. Why are so many churches so "proud" of their Apostolic message changing their names? |

Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
To what degree is it possible to "water down" our message or methodology in order to reach the world at large and still maintain an "Apostolic" identity?
Or are we reaching the point where many, if not most believe it is no longer necessary or essential to be identified as a seperate "movement"? |

Re: Does Your Church Name Include the Words...
Our church name is Grace Apostolic Fellowship. Our pastor actually wanted the name Grace Fellowship but probably 90% of our church was UPC seven months ago as well as our pastor so most folks don't want to totally lose their identity.
Plus we had to make sure that the folks we split from new that we were more apostolic than them. :lol Most of the young folks call our church Grace Fellowship. Also if you take our initials, GAF and flip around it doesn't seem so nice. |

Do we want to appear more "mainstream" and then sneak in a little holiness? And I know what you mean by "standards" and just wish that perhaps we could start using a term like "traditions". I have no doubt that pretty much every church member in here belongs to a church which has and teaches standards, and codes of conduct. Even if they do not maintain the "holiness" traditions in which they were raised. |

We probably need a word that more appropriately defines "standards" such as no cut hair, pants on women, jewelry, etc. Maybe since they are "extra biblical standards" we could call them that but it might offend those who consider them biblical. |
