I just received my book...

today I received a 50 page book called Television Advertising, Televangelism & The United Pentecostal Church - A Good Idea? It was written by Larry Booker, Kenny Godair, Peter F. Connell, and Nathanial Wilson

I'll post some thoughts after reading it.

Anyone else get one - read it yet?

"GL" 03-17-2007 07:57 PM

Are all pastors of the upc supposed to get one? I'd love to read it...

I don't know but since I am a "nobody" in the org. I would guess that it went out to the entire membership.

CC1 03-17-2007 11:12 PM

I am assuming they think it IS a good idea?

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is their next title going to be "Short Sleeve Shirts and Blouses and the United Pentecostal Church - A Good Idea?"

If it's only 50 pages you can read it in a very short time.

What do you think of it? Give us a synopsis and bit of a review. :)

CC1 03-17-2007 11:50 PM

Will the book be made into a movie? If so I am just going to wait for that to come out.

Scott Hutchinson 03-17-2007 11:56 PM

Will this book be advertised on TBN?

I won't have time to read it until after church tomorrow. I'll post some thoughts tomorrow night.

You can make fun if you want to but at least someone is doing something to defend their position. I wish that we had more things like this about many issues.

The good thing is that now there is something definitive to talk about.

Felicity 03-18-2007 12:46 AM

Nobody is a nobody. We're all somebodies in God's eyes. He calls us by name. He knows our thoughts, our strengths, our weaknesses, our desires, our tiredness, confusion, frustrations, dreams, disappointments, hopes, plans and vision.

What is passed over by man ... what seems weak and effective and ineffectual to himself and to others .... may be making an impact for eternity in ways that we do not know and cannot tell. But God Almighty, Master of the Universe does know!

Nobody is a nobody. :)

Where do I rank, I haven't received one yet......:sad :wave :killinme

IAintMovin 03-18-2007 06:38 AM

As a minister in the UPCI, I have a voice and a vote, I will vote my preference on this issue, however I personally have no problem with those on both sides making their case for their reason of why for, or why against.

Glad that these men are doing this and hope that the other side can come together and do something likewise, funny thing is that on the Pro side there is a usually just a lot of screaming foul and no substance put out for their stand.

Dan 03-18-2007 07:44 AM

I received the book. Same old rhetoric we have heard before trying to explain why TV and internet are different. Sorry, I don't see the difference. It's all about what these guys want. If they want to believe that way....so be it, but let the rest of us alone! It's just amazing to me how they try to explain things away.

It would appear Dan that theirs is the origonal position and they might feel quite similiarly to you........

I am certain they feel that the other side has found ways to explain it away.....

And no doubt they feel that they would be left alone.....

Now I agree with you before you say it....mailing you a book is not leaving you alone......

But that side does offer a more substantive position on the television issue than "the souls"

But then your side has Mark Hamby to hold up and say this is our success story

These brothers have been around long enough to want to avoid the guaranteed fallout that another Hamby debacle will prompt

Exactly.

But you have to remember that we are smarter, more spiritual, and just all around superior guys to Hanby and his ilk.

I lived through the Hanby debacle as you call it. I have been around longer than most of these guys. I still contend, regardless of all their explanations, that the internet is way worse than TV. I have not had near as much trouble with people in my church over TV as I have had over internet. We need to be preaching control, even on the internet! I don't have time this morning, but I would be more than happy to debate the issue. And yes, you are right, I did not ask for their book. Let me just tell you that I know these guys. One of them that has a chapter in the book went to Las Vegas some time back on vacation....... I will just stop there. If we are going to preach the manual so straight......what is worldly amusements?

Dan...why all the kicking and screaming for TV. Cool it and be patient....it has been coming for years by osmosis. And then with the change in technology it will be moot before long.....

By the way.....the resolution ain't passing in Tampa...no matter who says what.....

I agree that it is coming no matter what. By the way...it will pass in Tampa. In my humble opinion, anybody that preaches against TV and has the internet is a hypocrite. Just a thought. :)

Now Dan has done called nearly every minister in the UPCI a hypocrite except himself.....

What does that say?

Not so my friend. Evidently many feel the way I do.....look at the closeness of the vote.

I don't know why you believe that. It was very close at Salt Lake City...regardless of all the busing in votes for your side. Tampa is a long way from California.

You know what is amazing to me? You don't hear folks from our side of the issue threatening to leave the UPCI, but you do from your side. It is kind of like if it don't go my way, I will take my ball and go home. I say go!

Dan....there are a few idiots on the conservative side who think they have sway enough to use the threat....

But I kinda feel the same way about those of you who want to change the org....leave

Brother, I ain't leaving! You can't change anything if you bail out. I am here to stay. (Unlike some of those who are crybabies) Believe me.....some things need to be changed!

Felicity 03-18-2007 10:59 AM

I think it would be a shame to leave the UPCI over the tv issue. Don't let issues cloud good sense and good judgment!

:)

Felicity 03-18-2007 11:01 AM

The organization is changing and has been ever since it began. To think it won't continue to change is not intelligent.

I don't agree with them either. This organization has changed many things over the years. Some for the better, some perhaps for worse. But the answer is not leaving. You cannot change anytihing from the outside looking in.

How could someone in good conscious sign something they don't believe? Isn't that lying? In 1992 another minister told my pastor to sign it and repent of it later. My pastor chose not to sign.

Aside from the TV issue, do you believe that all ministers that sign the AS preach and believe everything in the articles of faith? Do some go to Six Flags? Branson? Etc. That is a worldly amusement isn't it? Just wondering.

The manual says "all worldly sports and amusements"

Honestly, I don't know what is in the articles of faith. Those who sign something they say they adhere to but don't ...must give account of their actions to God.

That is the problem! We want to zero in on one thing when in reality I personally don't know anyone who follows the manual to the crossing of the T and dotting of the I. Our problem is inconsistency!

I hope preachers at least hold on until the conference vote on TV! If you leave, you can't vote! :)
