“Many frighten themselves from real duties by imaginary difficulties…He talks of a lion without, but considers not his real danger from the devil, that roaring lion, which is in bed with him, and from his own slothfulness, which kills him,” [M. Henry]. For the person who is unwilling to do honest work, any excuse will do, though it makes him appear ridiculous by its silliness. |

I suppose the task never gets done when we are paralyzed by what terrible things may happen if we act as we should. I guess a continual refusal to act is slothfulness on my part. |

Re: Please Interpret This Scripture
People spend their whole lives afraid of change. Nearly all discover that when they finally DO change, a deep regret that they didn't do it sooner.
Case in point, we just moved across the country from the wonderful state of Wisconsin. We both have large families there who LOVE the area we moved too. When asked why they don't move with us, we inevitably get the response "Oh, we can't move because of....<fill in the blank>". The simple fact is that there are very few REAL reasons that someone can't do something, no matter what it is. It all comes down to the will and being able to conquer imaginary fears, and being able to step out of the little bubble of safety that people build around them. "Sure my house is falling apart and there is nothing to do in this small town.... But at least I am comfortable here." |

And when it is time to be slothful, you should do THAT with all your might as well. :) |
Re: Please Interpret This Scripture
Biblically it speaks of a slothful man who allows his fears to immobilize him or uses his fears as an excuse to not perform his duty.
Personally, I felt an application of it would be properly applied to people who will not share the gospel or witness for fear the devil and what others might say. These are spiritually slothful. |
