Christian/Gospel Music
If a person who says they are a Christian but doesn't listen to Christian/Gospel music much at all, are they really a Christian? Are they really saved?
This person asked me, "Well is everything on tv you watch Christ-oriented? What's the difference?" Is there a difference? I had no response and remembered the days when I did not have and did not want a tv in my barracks. I feel quite foolish. |

We were actually taught in church that secular music was wrong. We were specifically told that Celine Dion was "bedroom music" :drama BTW ~ I listen to Christian music very rarely now. Not that it means anything, because I don't call myself a Christian either ;) |
Re: Christian/Gospel Music
I try to let the Word be my guide in was music I listen to, what shows I watch, what books I read.
As long as you're keeping your relationship with God in mind in whatever you do and wherever you go, you'll probably be making the right choices. To say all secular things (tv, internet, radio, movies, books, music) are sinful, isn't being truthful... but to say that many secular things can be harmful... that's a safer statement. I don't always get this right, but I think the scripture is pretty clear on what we should (and should not) put into our minds. Philippians 4:8 |

I think things are what they are. I don't believe in cutting yourself off from the culture around it. Sure, when you are believe in God, your world view is going to be different. But if you aren't going to participate in your world, you might as well go live on a commpound. |

Re: Christian/Gospel Music
Because someone does not listen to Christian music doesn't mean they are not a Christian or even said. IF a person proclaims to be a Christian yet listens to anit-Christian music-by this I mean songs that speak against God- then I would question their motives, but music doesn't always make the man.

1. I think common sense will tell us that... God doesn't need to. Obviously when you're singing about your smokin' hot husbands rear end, you're no wear near Sacred... (wellllll... some might debate that lol) 2. I don't believe in cutting myself off either. I do believe that we are in the world and not of it. I participate in my world as much as I can until I feel it's infringing, hindering or harming my walk with God. I am really not at home here anymore. |

Where in my above posts did you see me say secular (vs Christian or gospel or "sacred") music was all bad? Sometimes I wonder if some of you are even reading what is written or just assuming what is meant because you know someone is more conservative. :D |

Relax it wasn't personal. My son and I were at a game not too long ago and he looked at me and said, "Dad, why would they even play that song?" Needless to say it wouldn't be allowed on his ipod. So it wasn't a shot at you it just jogged a memory that's all. |

You know the first time I heard that song was at the church on Wilson rd. we were having one of those dress up like cowboys things for Sunday school, and somebody was playing that on the guitar and singing it out on the playground. |

Re: Christian/Gospel Music
I started this thread because my "lady friend", who was raised Baptist (not SBC), does not think it is important to "seek the infilling of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues." We have been together for awhile now. She attended a Pentecostal church for 2 yrs and has not spoken in tongues and does not think she "needs" that experience. I don't believe one has to speak in tongues to be saved, but sure would want my future wife to have shared that experience. She knows of gospel artists, but owns only secular R&B cd's. Furthermore, there are other things that make me think she has not been changed by Christ on the inside-- but I have faults too. I really want to move our relationship forward, but I'm afraid.
Yesterday, after I expressed concern about our relationship, she cried and asked, "What more do I have to do to show I love you?" It really shook me up. |

Dont look at it like "But I have faults too". Look at it like "Im going to get closer to Jesus very soon". When you do you will want a woman who DOES regard Christian music and Christian everything. Once you are married its to late to change your mind. |
Re: Christian/Gospel Music
yeah I broke up with her. it was painful and I had tears as I walked out her door. I miss her even right now, just missing having her a part of my life.

Re: Christian/Gospel Music
hard decision, but the right one.
you would have regretted it down the road if she didn't have a desire to get closer to God and you did. PS-Phil 4:8 should settle it. why would you WANT to listen to anything non-christian. I have church on the way to work! |
