P2P Downloading & Privacy Issues
In Canada, the Supreme Court upheld about 4-6 years ago in a ruling by the court that Peer to peer file sharing at least as it pertains to music is not copyright infringement.
Many music artists agreed & even went to bat in a Texas court when American's were being targeted for prosecution. In Canada, for about 4 years now there has been a federal levy on each blank cassette & CD/DVD of about 10 -25 cents each that went to recording artists. There is a new law trying to be brought forward by the Government that would replace the old copy right law, but potentially give the Government, Police, and border guards more power to prosecute potential copyright infringement. That being said, the clincher is how it will affect privacy rights. Police will be able to examine your Ipod, Laptop, or home computer for possible infringement. If you cross the border, the Canadian border guards can inspect these items in your possession at the time. Can someone see a Police State in our future? |

Why should I pay for other peoples uses, the US takes that kind of thing into consideration and tries not to infringe on the profits of companies such as Memorex. It's just not a logical solution to an answer, and it is ridiculous Canada ruled it wasn't copyright infringement... |

Now, I am not sure about Canada but in the past decade we have had a shift in the vocabulary. The conservative philosophy is really classical liberalism while liberalism is social liberalism. There is also a neoconservative movement that is large government consertism which is similar to some of the Bush policies. Anyway, that is not a conservative mentality and anyone that is for it is not a conservative. |

Re: P2P Downloading & Privacy Issues
Cliff, the concept of conservitism in Canada extends from the European kind that lends itself to totalitarian government.
Ameican Conservitism has a vastly different source. American Concervitism stems from the Liberalism of the Enlightenment. John Locke and such.... We tend to fight over wheither or not the government should take care of us or not. Canadians and Europeans tend to fight over how the government should take care of them. |

The concepts are still the same. Our conservatives are the liberals of the rest of the world. |

If the conservatives are for this, then they are not conservatives even by George Bush's standards. So that pretty much negates your statement they are really conservative. |

The terms had a flip flop and conservatives are really liberals while liberals are progressives or social liberals. There is no difference about arguing freedom versus help.... they are synonymous, that made no sense. Americans that argue for more gov'mt involvement would be the same people in Canada wanting the same thing. |

That's what I said if you would read my other posts... I was using Bush to say that Canadians are not even conservative by his standards, because he isn't. |
