Temperance - Do We Have Any?
 
With all this talk about TV, internet, books and the choices we have to make everyday where is our temperance?

Are we taught temperance? Do we trust ourselves to make sound choices with moderation?


Galatians 5:22-25 (King James Version)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

You have a point Renda, however we have to define temperance.

Smoking isn't in the Bible so with that in mind is one cigarette enough?
What about Pot, is one joint okay?
Drinking wine in the Bible isn't forbidden, but it is spoken of as to not be drunk with wine but be filled with the Spirit.

Your thought reminded me of this scripture:

1 Corintian 9:25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown

Baron.. I started my first ever (and only) thread on this forum with that scripture. Positively..positive. It seemingly flopped.

Your post shakes me out of a complacency I can fall into (with many of my brethren). Some how there is this idea that not being subject to the law is a state of "lesser acountability".

Our HEART is the source of EVERY issue that we are expected to take before God. Our actions are only outcomes extending from the true motive center of each of us....the thoughts and intents of our hearts.

Temperance is established as a heart condition. It can not be humanly 'willed' or purposed into being. It is the manifestation of a life in Christ that is moving beyond milk, and going on to perfection.

I can assure you I don't dance, and it has nothing to do with legalism, I was just born very very white in that department.

I knew someone loved me!!! :tissue

I blow two fans on him, in the shop, at night. I also put two bowls of water out. I am watching the water level to see if he is getting overheated. That would be an indicator, wouldn't it?

If I left him in the yard and he barked at night, my husband would get up and shoot him and I'm not making that up!! :tissue

For those who share in this 'state of mindedness', it would seem like any discussion about 'are you still under the law' would become a moot point being that we are members of a body predicated upon something higher rather than lesser; love. If the law, being good, would require something, LOVE would even more so have this condition established in the abundance of the heart.

I am not even being flippant, either ;)

I have always been a person of extremes. Which is not to say that I lovingly embrace that tendency!

I fully acknowledge that I am currently taking a vacation at the opposite extreme of where I used to live. But I do believe that I will eventually move to a little more balanced place. (Though my "balance" may still be far more left than anyone else on this board, lol)
