Afterwards, I was thanking God that no one was hurt by the black widow. I am so glad that my wife noticed it and that we both were not bitten.

Where there's one, there are often more in hiding. Get some spectracide bug stop spray. (available at walmart) It's less than $9 a gallon, and it's good for indoor or outdoor use. You could spray inside the mailbox, leave the door open and let it dry. Once the spray has dried, it's supposed to repel any type of bug from the area for up to 9 months.
My husband found a black widow here last year in the yard near the outside trash bin. He caught it in a jar, and we used it as a science project to study for a couple of days. It took 18 days for the thing to dry up and die with no air, no water and no food. Watching it through the glass was very interesting for my kids.
I'm not risking another live one being found here. This spectracide spray is my greatest weapon to keep them out of the house.
