~~~~Interracial Marriage~~~~
I'm appalled by certain leaders who profess God, and forbidding interracial dating and marriage.
The bible reads:
Acts 17:26
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth.....
1 Corinthians 7:39 give us an example of a wife ability to marry ONLY anyone in the Lord. It reads nothing about ethnicity.
"The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord."
Also, notice similar instructions in Deuteronomy 7:1-6.
"Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly" (v. 3-4).
The dilemma presented was marrying outside the "Church" would cause Israel to turn away from God.
Those against interracial marriage, I'd openly rebuke you if admin allowed it. Nevertheless, I'm open to discuss this situation with the anti-interracial crowd.
There is no racism in the kingdom of God! If your found as a racist, you better question what kingdom you really belong to!
Surely no one on AFF would be so acinine as to suggest inter racial couples should not marry.
surely we dont have anyone so completly wrong here.
Re: ~~~~Interracial Marriage~~~~
In several chapters, the Bible opined you should not marry other tribes, other nationalities, or members of other religions. I take it on a case by case situation but with over 50% of marriages failing, it is hard to condone the strain put on a marriage by trying to work through the differences of culture. This is not just black and white. Any race has it's cultures and beliefs. When you fall in love, you don't consider what effect these differences will have on you and your marriage. I feel when the bible speaks of not being unequally yoked, it meant more than just religion. They also have to deal with the way society treats both them and their children.
While I hate any bigotry in this area we should realize that there are some that disagree for different reasons than the one mentioned. They may be wrong but the arguments against inter-racial marriage do not all come from bigotry.
Sadly, I just had a family get ticked off beyond measure because I performed a mixed marriage a few weeks ago. The couple was the son and daughter of two of my ordained ministers who are assistants. One is our worship pastor, who is a commander in the Navy and also in management in a local mfg facility here and the other is a college professor. They are outstanding families in our church.
To the family who got ticked off, who won't talk about it with me, I say, "Don't let the church door hit ya where........" well, you know the rest! I can deal with a lot of things, but this type of unChrist like behavior is not one of them! :D
Mosby, biblical prohibition of marriage outside the Jewish tribes was really a religious condition. NOT an interatial one.
Moses' wife was not Hebrew. He was the leader of the people.
Jesus was decended from Rahab and Ruth, neither were Hebrew. Both embraced the Jewish faith.
20 years ago one might very well have offered social stigama as a reason to council against interacial marriage. That argument fails today.
I do think one should not marry the french!
I tried so hard to find someone that was the exact same percentages of Irish, German and Cherokee, plus whatever else may be in my family tree... I believe my wife is more English and Welsh so I am doomed. :(
With my views, I would have had more marital problems if I had married someone in the church than out...
Re: ~~~~Interracial Marriage~~~~
Biblically, I think there are no grounds to forbid it. Culturally, there may be some concerns, not in the sense of forbidding interracial marriage, but couples shouldn't be blind to their community and difficulties they may face within it. There are definitely places in the South where being an interracial couple can not only make you the object of disgust, but can conceivably place you in danger. Unfortunately, racism does exist, and couples need to be smart enough to address it head on. There will be longterm considerations, because you will no doubt encounter racism in the family of your prospective spouse.
I do not believe cultural difficulty is a good enough reason to forbid interracial marriage. Furthermore, I find that ministers who prohibit it, usually only do so between blacks and whites, which basically discredits their entire logic.
Some come from experience. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, I just personally would not recommend it and it has everything to do with culture and that comes from my own experience.
Number one, the warning against marrying from other nations was because the other nations in the Bible were heathen nations. Number two, whether black, white, Latino, Asian, or whatever other ethnic group found in the USA, we are all still Americans and have much more in common than we don't. Lastly, to suggest being unequally yoked has anything whatsoever to do with marrying someone of another color is absurd, preposterous, and racist.
Agreed... in the OT Bible it was pretty much the Jews against everyone else... might make for uncomfortable family gatherings if God decided to slaughter all of your in-laws (or their first-born children). If Jesus opened up the club to Gentiles then we should all be cool now... :D
Racism is a good word. but in the church I think we ought to approach it a bit differently.
we should call it SIN. racism is as sinful as homosexulality or drunkeness or lying or any of the other sins listed.
and it will send you to hell.
there. I feel better.
Mutts make the best dogs, in my opinion. I haven't had a dog in a long time, but I sure would like to have one. Funky old landlord won't let me have one, though. He's worried about his precious wood floors :blah:blah:blah! For what he's charging me for this house I should be able to have wild animals in the house if I wanted! :kickcan
I have 11 nieces and nephews, 3 are half black, 1 is half samoan, and 1 is half philipino. They are adorable!! The resta re white like me, but they are precious too!:hug3
I tell my mom she has her own song... "Grandma loves all the grandkids, red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in her sight..."
It is my opinion (and I believe that of scripture), that the most important thing God looks at is their beliefs (are both Christian), not their skin color.
But marriage between an ultraCon and a Liberal.... uh oh
I'm happy that you have had a good experience, your right--just because I had a bad one doen't mean it's not right for someone else. I guess The key would be to be accepting of each other's differences and not try to change each other and that could be for any situation--city girl to county boy, (me) northern girl to southern boy (me) or an actual race difference.
Oh yeh, I can't forget "being IN LOVE":wub
Re: ~~~~Interracial Marriage~~~~
The Bible doesn't say interracial marriage is a sin,but interracial marriages in alot of places will have prejudices and cultural probelms,and alot of times children in mixed marriages suffer from both sides.
But say to it's a sin ,I can't honestly say that.
As in any marriage people should not marry outside of the faith,and folks need to make sure they marry in God's will.
tstew 06-26-2008 04:52 PM
Re: ~~~~Interracial Marriage~~~~
I honestly feel like some of the people who I have dealt with in the past have used their "genuine concern" for the social plight of the interracial to mask their own discomfort with White/Black marriages specifically. Some of them did not raise the same concerns with the unions of other cultures. At the same time I do recognize the unique history of White/Black in America.
It has long been a regret of mine, that the church was not at the forefront of overcoming that history (particularly the Apostolic church, since we do claim to be the Church). I say that if two people are in love and the will of God...go for it. Their chances of making it can't be any worse than anybody else's these days.
I heard an old Black preacher in Pentecost say "don't call me Brother, if deep down you feel you are too good to call me Brother-in-Law, because Brother is a much more intimate relationship"
