Things people say

Does it bug you when people misuse a phrase?

One that I hear all the time is, "That judge just splits the baby." What they really mean is he divides things 50 - 50.

or

"I could care less" when what they really mean is that, "They couldn't care less"

or

"The proof is in the pudding" which makes no sense, but the actual quote "The proof of the pudding is in the eating" does.

Do you have any to add to the list?

I hate the expression, "You can't have your cake and eat it too".

Why would you want cake if you can't eat it? What'cha gonna do? Sit it up and look at it and say, "This is my cake. I can't eat it but it sure is a good looking hunk of cake!"?? :crazy

Usually this idea is expressed when one wants to do two things one of which would exclude the other. Such as eating your cake, and still having your cake. Another way of saying that would be, "You can't have it both ways."

"You made your bed, now you have to lie in it"... Wouldn't it make more sense the other way around? Why would I want to lie in a bed that I JUST made?

"Half a dozen of one or six of another" - - - once again just say "about the same"

Don't know if this is true but at least it makes more sense when understood this way...

the saying comes from a time when beds were made on a yearly basis. If you stuffed your mattress with low quality stuffing like grass you would sleep quite comfortably for a week or so but the grasses would soon break down and you would be lying on a very poor bed.

I mentioned this on another thread the other day. My sister said one time, "You hit the nail on the bucket!"

It was a mix of "You hit the nail on the head" and "It's just a drop in the bucket". :)
