Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
Recently there has been a wave of “purse parties” going through the Christian ranks. They basically sell knockoff Coach Purses and the like, they also have large booths at the Farmer’s Market down the road.
This prompted a question from me, how do you feel about this? Would you buy one? What if it was a “knock off” suit? Or Shoes? Or a watch? Can a Christian, in good conscience, wear or carry something that is a “knock off”? Your opinions.... |

Why not? Some of them wear a knock off religion.

Yes, it is. But they are doing it anyway. That is my question, would you do it? Would you buy a really nice purse from a party (think pampered chef, or tupperware-type party) except instead of kitchen proucts, it is purses compete with the "C" on the bag. They go for around $25.00

If you shop at some re-sale shops you can find some of these items in excellent condition. Very inexpensive. |

Why would we even want to be what we are not? |

Well, I don't really care about those types of things, if I found one that I happened to like for really cheap I probably would buy it, but I don't generally buy "name brands" (except when it comes to perfumes!) so it isn't a big deal to me.
My sister-in-law buys them at thrift stores a lot, and she has bought some for cheap on-line before, but they always claim to be the "real thing", so I guess there is plausible deny-ability if there was a problem. She believes they are real, I am more suspicious by nature, lol!! |

A friend of mine buys her purses and things from Nordy's but it hurts my stomach to walk through those places! The prices are ridiculous! I guess I just need to think a little less of what people think of me! I actually attended one of the "purse parties" and was shocked to see what "Christians" were doing, maybe it's because I am married to an attorney, but it just seemed wrong! And I am afraid that the FBI will come after me!:aaa |

Re: Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
I guess i am not alone on this one then. Ha! I have never cared to buy anything that is name brand. My mom has always taught me to not portray something that I am not. Besides, i really don't see the point to it. I too feel sick looking at those prices. I could never spend so much money on clothes. I like sales ... but I dont like shopping. I go for what I am going for, don't like to stand there and look around. :crazy

Even if it was legal, I personally would not buy one. I would just feel silly carrying or wearing a "knock off". I don't know why but these "purse parties" are taking me back to remembering people "in church" who were watching bootleg copies of The Passion because they didn't want to sin by going to the theatre. Sometimes a lack of clear thinking in areas of ethics and the law makes me shake my head. |
