Why Do You Hang Around Here?
 

This post rang true to me when I read it!

Many have wondered why so many of us ex-UPC people hang around here and I know from time to time we've tried to explain it, but the answer for me is just as RD stated - - it's our history.

It's part of my culture of who I am and why I am who I am. To be in contact with others that were raised similar makes it fun to hang around here. It's like a family - we know so many of the same people, have had so many of the same experiences and like the UPC culture thread can laugh about so many of the things we did through the years.

With all the fussing and division at times it's a wonder we even speak to each other from day to day, but it's because we have that common bond.

What's so hard to understand about that? :friend

I hang around here because I like alot of people here it's rather hard to explain,but people here treat me kindly.

Because it's like family. Even though you don't always agree, you have a common bond.

There are very few people in my life that I can walk up to and talk about my history, they think it's crazy! I remember one time having a conversation with someone about my history and they said, "I don't care what someone said, I would never take off my make-up!"
My comment to them was, "if you sincerely thought it would get you Heaven, you would"...
Other people don't "get it"
But my adopted family at AFF does!

Well, I came here out of curiosity. And stayed because of a few people that I have really come to like a lot. Some are gone, but some are still here. Except for that Prax guy :D most of y'all are very likable people. And I wanted to reconnect to my past if I could. Being here and posting really gave me a desire to know God more. And to be like Jesus, and pray for God to give me strength to go to church when I can. Sometimes y'all get me through some days when I want to give up.

Sometimes I ask myself that same question. Then I answer it with this: Raven, Pressingon, Amazing Grace, Renda, Sis Falla, Sis Alvear,Rico, Bro. Scott. Sisters Barb, Esther and Rhoni, St Matthew and many more. You guys are the reasons I keep hangin' around. And something more...every so often a crumb falls from the Masters Table in the form of a post that ministers to me- and helps me to see where I need to follow a little closer to the Lord.


Micheal Phelps, too. So I hang around because of you guys. Its your fault I'm still here.

I'm like so many of the others of you who've said that you come here because the Apostolic church is a part of who you are. I coud no more deny the influence that the UPC has had on my life than I could deny the change being married to Walt has made in my life.

It's almost like we come here because we feel a need to connect with our arm or our leg or our ear. We're all part of the body of Christ. I need you - all of you. Just like, whether you like it or not, you also need me :)

Besides all that, the honest truth is that when we talk to people who've never experienced this, they don't get it. We might as well be talking gibberish. I need to talk to people who have had these same experiences and know what I'm talking about.

Plus, I've learned to love a whole lot of you :friend

AND I love the way we can be fussing one moment and be presented with a need and immediately all weapons are put down and prayer is going up!

I followed Cindy over here from GNC and found that there were a few folks that I knew. Also made some new friends and renewed contact with some old friend through some here.
I believe there are many others here that possibly we either have met or know alot of the same folks.

Also was reminded of some words to a song (probably a country western one). "The roots of my raising run deep". I believe this is one of the things we all have in common no matter if we are still part of the UPC or not. I'm way up here in Alaska and have been for almost 19 years. My southern roots still run deep! :D

Renda, I agree with you 100%. It is a culture thing. I hang out with old friends when I am in town cause of the times we spent together and we are still friends. I am friends with the UPCI, but not married to it. I hang around here, AFF because I like the culture here. It is a place for people that call Jesus God no matter how the other chips fall.

I am a big fan of history. American history, church history, etc. It is impossible to know where you are going with out knowing where you have been. It is human nature to know where you come from. I have friends that were adopted when younger. Often times they want to seek out the biological parents to know where they come from. I think the same is true here. UPCI or ALJC, is where my background is. It is not where my theology lies, but I do attend a UPCI church. I think that alot of us 'formers and exes' are fine with being involved with the people still in the UPCI. I for one thank God for the UPCI and ALJC because they birthed me spiritually.

:shockamooI come from a Southern Baptist Background. But, having experienced the Baptisim of the Holy Ghost, speaking in tongues, etc; I found this forum to be informative. I can't really agree on a lot of the doctrine, and I find it somewhat disturbing how people get so angry with each other on here. I still like most of the people I've "met" on here. I need to be more forgiving and loving in how I deal with those with whom I dont always agree.

Two reasons. I work for the railroad and I am Pentecostal. Both cultures have their own language and way of talking. If you tell a story to an outsider, it loses it's funniness because you have to explain so much. It's two cultures I understand and they understand me. This forum is enjoyable (most of the time), concerns ideas I believe and is made up of a lot of really nice folks. I enjoy the gossip and info about events happening around the country.

Why do I hang around here? Good question!

The answer is pretty much why I do almost anything.......I want to make a difference. I do NOT want to make everyone like me. But God has put so many good men and women in my life who have made a difference; I just want to do the same thing. Truthfully, pastoring a church of 300 and the other things I am involved in take up quite a bit of my time. I am very involved in my community and am beginning to travel to other countries more to teach on the Jewish roots of Christianity and the oneness of God.

I like the people here! I like the exchanges. I like the way the people here cause me to think and I hope from time to time I challenge others to think as well.

I got saved, married, ordained and pastored in the UPC for over 20 yrs. It is my Christian cultural roots. I still have many connections in it. I still bring attention to its warts and rightly so. I also have a deep appreciation for its wonderful men and women of God.

I am secure in who I am because of Him and I honestly don't need to post here to make me feel good. I have a camaraderie with the other owners here even though we're not all alike. I believe that unity is diversity walking the same direction.

AFF is fun. AFF is NOT life. AFF is not everything to me, but it is something....something I enjoy. AFF is truly the people who post here and I enjoy everyone of them...those who like me and those who don't.....lib, con & everything in between. We share a common bond around the Godhead and I am sold out to that truth in scripture!

Can you imagine how boring it would be if the only members present for conservative and a few mod posters?

Can we all say 'amen?', and "good report!", and 'preach it bro!' would be the bulk of the posts.

And the threads on those who 'went charasmatic' and 'backslid' to which there would be plenty of the above as well.

I think this is a great forum and I have been blessed by making many friendships here and I know more people are praying for us...and some in time will come and visit us here on the mission field.
I don´t think we have to agree on everything to still be friends...
